Sorry that I am at this point unable to get the photos on here. I will have to read further. Anyway, did I mention that the house is located on a hill? A steep hill? I walked down to the store, because the little one up the street has so few items. I swear the angle of incline is over 45%. The cement surface is grooved, but slipping, esp. where sand has been dumped, is possible. The trip back had my legs throbbing. I pretended to stop to check out the view, but really I was sweating and out of breath. Today I ache. Guess I won't need to find a gym! There is another, less direct but less steep route that I'll attempt this afternoon. Exciting to begin discovering the neighborhood. Construction is underway in ... read more

From Merida we took the nightbus to Palenque what seemed to be a good idea but turned out not to be such a good idea, or at least not for me (krista). The bus driver was more or less a wild rider who just bumped his horn when overtaking another car, besides he got confused with his light and turned it of and on and off all the time.... As you can imagine it gave me small heart attacks and kept my eyes wide open... Luckely Flora had a good night rest and we arrived in the early morning in Palenque and went straigth to the first hotel (cheap and dirty with beds on cement blocks) because we couldn't be bothered and tried to sleep for a while. Unfortunately a crazy rooster was in the yard ... read more

Well it´s been a while, friends, and I have turned 25. It´s not so bad, after all. I haven´t written a blog for some time because I´ve been messing around putting my pictures up. Where did I leave off last time? My brief playing in Puebla. That was a lot of fun. Check out Tess´s blogs on the subject too: Travelblog.org/bloggers/tess Since then, we went to Palenque, saw the ruins there for my birthday. It is crazy thinking about those times when Mayas ruled. They had an advanced civilization that in some ways puts europeans to shame, however, the europeans managed to dominate the world with imperialism, somehow. How did that work out? Were the europeans more warlike, were they just more cruel and heartless, willing to do anything in the name of their god? I ... read more

So when I went to pick up Davy at the airport of course my family was wondering if he was my boyfriend. And as much as I kept saying NO they thought otherwise. So when Davy arrived on friday my aunts husband took me to pick him up. We went to the city of Guadalajara which is about 2 hours away from where I´m staying in Tala, Jalisco. We took Davy to eat TORTAS DROWNED in hot sauce which he wont shut up with. He met the family and then I took him to the Plaza in Tala for a few beers. Sometime later friday night we debated on spending the 4 cents on the bus or street vendor tacos. Well we spent it on the tacos and shared a 40 for $1.35 and attempted to ... read more

Had a tooth fall apart leaving a huge gap. the dentist checks me out, cleans out the area, and fits me for a crown, and presents me with a bill for one thousand dollars. this baby boomer has no dental insurance. ouch. they fit me with a temp crown, I pay the bill, and exit. somehow, I feel I have been taken. A few days later, I return to get the crown put on. But I tell them about the pain in my tooth. He tells me I need a root canal. thanks. why didn't to tell me that before the crown was paid for and made? I smell a scam. They make an appointment for me, it will be another thousand dollars. had a friend of mine on his way down to TJ for some ... read more

Disclaimer: On this trip I will probably be drunk alot so I apologize now if my rantings make no sense sometimes. I think the last entry was one of them. Also sorry if I dont reply to your comments the internets arent usely free. So we made it after a very queasy 4 hour bus ride from Tala to Puerto Vallarta. Once we got here Davy and I still had to take another bus for about an hour which gave us a tour of the real puerto vallarta and its not anything like the post cards. When we finally got to the hostel there was no one here but one other girl. So ofcourse we headed into town and Davy decided to splurge a bit. Fact: no where in Mexico do the menus include chips and ... read more

Hopefully this entry will not evaporate like the first two. Who knows what I did. But I said that if the plane could fly, I would go. It did, well, as far as Houston. We then sat on the runway till it got so late that they had to give us all a hotel room. After our short five hour stay, we were up at 4 AM to catch the shuttle back to the airport. Suffice to say that the experience was really a book of short stories. But the luck of it was that on the usual evening flight its well after dark when you arrive. We got the sunrise with mountains emerging from the clouds crowning a hodge-podge patchwork of fields, incredible greens with a strip of marigold every so often. The house is ... read more

First off, we’d like to thank our many friends who hosted us in Sunriver, Bend, Sisters, Vancouver and Tucson in September while we made the transition from our travels in South America to Mexico. We couldn’t have done it without you. We’re just sorry we couldn’t make time for everyone. What a long, long trip it’s been! We drove from Bend to Tucson in two and a half days, driving through Yosemite National Park. Spectacular scenery, but a bit crowded in the park and overpriced concessionares. While we were in Tucson visitng Rick and Anne, we finalized one of the two requirements to drive our car into Mexico - we purchased Mexican car insurance from a local agent. It’s not inexpensive, but it’s a legal requirement in Mexico. For the second requirement, a temporary import license ... read more

Well, we found out how to upload pics onto our blogs. Tess has got hers all hooked up, I´m still about to do it... Here´s her blog, so you can see us in action! http://travelblog.org/bloggers/tess/ We only have a few minutes left here... We´re in Palenque, we passed my birthday at the anxient ruins of the Mayas. It was amazing, and beautiful, we got some great pics. Don´t worry, I´ll show ya! We are leaving Palenque tomorrow for San Cristobal, and then Guatamala after that. We are taking our sweet time. The only place we blew through was Puebla, but I can´t complain. OK, I´ll be updating soon with pics, get ready! Colin... read more

We´re slightly behind with our diaries, but then we have been moving fast in the past week and seen so much!! It´s definitely time to update... We arrived in Merida during the hot midday and right in the south of town. The hostel we had heard about was in the north so quite a trek through the busy city. There were posters everywhere saying there´s a new hostel $4 per person and it was on our way so we thought we might as well check it out. And Krista was near to fainting so we needed a stop anyway. It was very central but a sweaty old man asked us what we wanted, I caught a glimpse of the bunk beds (and the sweaty old man offered us a matrimonial bed again...) - therefore, we quickly ... read more
