Although it was quiet last night, I was restless, my mind going back to the zocalo and the people spending the night there. Maybe in the next couple of days I'll try to stay after dark, at least. This morning my feet were in no mood to cover more ground, so I puttered around the yard, disicovering an avacado tree full of fruit and a big yellow-spotted green orb-weaving spider with hairy leg joints that made it look like it was wearing knee pads. Come high noon, though, I had to get out. Part of this reatlessness is just having Oaxaca de Juarez outside the window. No time to waste. So I headed north to scout out the cemetary of San Filipe de Agua. Its small, and unfortunately the gate was locked. The neighborhood is rather ... read more

Tuesday october 17th. So we ended up leaving Puerto Vallarta because there were way too many tourist and the prices were retarded. Davy was sad to leave his mariachi friend he had made the night before. I forgot to mention that Davy got to sing with a mariachi at the bar when we were drunk. We asked the local people around town about a beach near by for locals. They mentioned to go south about 5 or 6 hours to Barra de Navidad or Manzanillo but we werent up for the bus ride. A few mentioned to go north about an hour into the state of Nayarit and there we would find a beach town called Sayulita. A well known surf spot. So paid the 2 bucks and went up for an hour. Upon our arrival ... read more

It looks as though the photos are at the bottom of the page, so I will have to get busy and add more. I took the easy way today, and a bus to the zocalo. Now I am too tired to write much. Either way home at the end of the day is difficult. I said to a woman sitting in front of her house "Este camino me mata!" ("This hike kills me!") She laughed and said it won't be so bad next week!! She was at least 60 and has no doubt been doing it all her life. As you get closer to the center of town the graffiti becomes more dense, and as you approach the zocalo the barricades range from a few bags of sand, maybe a broken down car and some wire, ... read more

Der Bus fuhr mich ... read more

I had no intention of trecking all over the place today, not having slept well: dogs and sheep and fireworks and all. But then off I went in search of a public sculpture I had seen on the way in from the airport. I was lost, mostly, thinking "one more block or two." No map. Meandering. Discovered an aquaduct and ran into my first blocade. A wrecker was removing a graffiti ladened bus from blocking the street. There were also sandbags piled up and lots of wire of all sorts. Large groups of people. Quite tense. Then I ran into four more blockades, intact with banners and posters. People waiting and watching. I did at last find the sculpture: the bust of an Indian woman, who no one could identify and with no plack (but anti-Ruiz ... read more

Now for a little something different. I´m just going to put some pics up and tell the stories. Before it was all text, now all pictures, good balance. We are soon to head down to Guatamala. San Cristobol is great. Yesterday we went to a small maya village, chamalu. It was hard to take pictures, because it was native people living as they had for many centuries. The church there was the coolest ever. It had hundreds of candles lit, and pine needles on the floor. Me and Tess just sat no the floor. It was great! So relaxing in there. We went up to the front. There was a lady kneeling there, and a priest in plain clothes was saying something, a prayer over her maybe. Suddenly tess and I heard a Gobble gobble! The ... read more

Flying over Mexico City filled us with different emotions. We´d heard the stories of kidnappings and the fact that Mexico city has a population around 16 million meant that it is huge! We were bracing ourselves for the worst! After arrival we made our way to our hostel, right on the central square wih the parlament building and the cathedral by taxi without incident. The city has a busy but relaxed feel to it and actually felt rather fun and not intimidating, although the driving rivals any of the thrills available at Alton Towers. Our first week in Mexico has been something of a blur - having travelled over 2300 miles in the US in 9 days we were already tired and a little short of sleep but we managed to see quite a bit of ... read more

So, I have been here for almost three weeks and have been taking classes at a language school the whole time. I originally planned to study there for four weeks and then use one week to travel around with my friend Chris. But now I think I´m going to leave the school a week early and wander around by myself until I meet up with Chris. The school has been good for me. My spanish is definitely better than when I arrived (not that it really could have gotten worse!). But I´m realizing that I´m not going to learn as much about the language in four weeks as I thought I would. I had unrealistic expectations of being able to speak really well in spanish after a few classes, but I now know that being fluent ... read more

well copper canyon was basically the most beautiful thing i´ve ever seen. But, unfortunately my camera sucked and somehow randomly deleted half of my pictures, most of them being of the waterfalls and canyons and really nice. so that sucked. but everyone else took so many that once i get my ass in gear and get them from everyone i will have more than enough. i will post them up sometime next week probably and leave a link on here so you guys can check them out. Anyways, so we left last WEdnesday night from MAzatlan on a bus to Los Mochis at 10pm. But before that, i went and picked up Cam and we went to Laura and Maui (the finnish girls) house to get them. We decided that in order to sleep on the ... read more
