Costa Maya is a Mexico Tourism town, built by the government after a devasting hurricane in 2007 to help these poor folks out of poverty. On the dock is a beautiful, huge swimming pool, which I might do another time, surrounded by shops, double the price of out of this village. Our tour left at 8:05am from the pier. An hour bus ride with a great guide. I learned so much about Mayan history and beliefs. In Belize the guide wanted to talk more about slavery and British colonialism (it's formerly British Honduras). Most of the Belezians were black, with West Indian lilting voices, here they were all Mayan, short foreheads large noses. NO need to speak Spanish here, everyone spoke excellent English. Many still speak the Mayan dialect, also used in Apocolypto, with subtitles. So ... read more

15th Oct ’11 Playa del Carmen and joining the trip Well it’s still tanking it down and the pool is nearly bursting its banks! We had to check out of the lovely El Acuario and go to the hotel El Elefanta to join the trip, the hotel is ok but rather dingy and no lovely courtyard pool but it does have a lovely comfy bed so that will do for 1 night. We were forced to spend the afternoon in a little reggae pub as the rain was to bad to do anything else! We met up with the group, who seem a nice bunch there are 16 of us in total. We all went out for a meal at a local Mexican place which ended up with a river running down the middle of the ... read more

I kid you not, there I was laid out by the pool, thankfully under the 1 and only sunshade and it bounced off it and went under the little table next to me! The iguana then spent about 5 minutes looking down from the top of the wall behind us trying to find its lunch! Later that night I saw the hotel cat, Coco, speeding along with the dead rat in its mouth. I also came across the hotel tortoise today, which was huge, it’s the one and only time I have spotted him. 13th Oct ‘11 Well I guess it’s time for an update again, so basically it has just been days filled with sun, swimming and reading – wonderful!! Not another flying rat in sight! Not a lot else to say really, we have ... read more

Tulum is gorgeous. An hour south of the craziness and American- ness of Cancun and Playa del Carmen, and you have a stunning strip of white, fine sand and clear waters, and rustic, noffensive cabana accommodation lining its shores. Before I went out to the beach I decided to check into a hostel for the first night of being in Tulum. I had wanted to book a cabana if Steve had come with me, but thought it a bit excessive booking one for myself. I booked a dorm bed in a 4 bed dorm and have decided I am too old for this now! It wasn't awful, but I just like my own space and to not have to deal with anyone else! I shared with only one other girl, a german girl called Stefanie, and ... read more

Blog number 2 lets go! PLAYA DEL CARMEN Actually better than we first thought, the streets are lined with mexicans selling you the world¨s garbage : hats/slippers/sweets and fake mayan crap. But the nightlife was apart from the shitty Dansen Bij Jansen music pretty good, we met some beautiful mexican girls who i later met again before i left Playa. The beach in Playa was nothing short of AMAZING : beautiful white sandy beaches, the best weather ever and crystal clear sea. Sitting at the beach at night was also very relaxing. We made the trendy beachclub fusion our place to be for relaxing, wich served us some live reaggea and fireshows at night. And of course we met some amazing people there that gave us a truly memorable last night. COZUMEL Island half an hour ... read more

In 8 cruises, I’ve never really booked an independent excursion outside of the one time I went to Roatan and we hired a taxi for the day. I was a little worried about booking a bar hop that would leave us with only a 30 minute buffer to be back to the ship before it set sail. With prayers said and fingers crossed – and the trust in all the positive online reviews, we booked with www.cozumelbarhop.com and sent our $20 deposits to strangers in Cozumel in advance of the cruise. When we arrived in Cozumel, we followed the instructions on our confirmation emails, which led us out of the port area, down the street, and to a 7-11 convenience store as a meeting point. Ryan and Dana were with me and Jason, and with this ... read more

I wasnt sure whether to call this ´Cruise Ship Cozumel´but decided against it as it has so much more going for it. But truth be told, Cozumel is very American, full of Americans, either on holiday or let off from a cruise ship for the day. We saw a few bars with Americans drinking massive cocktails with balloon animal hats. Gave me an idea of what the Mayan Riviera is like on spring break and I don´t want to be here! Apart from this, Cozumel is beautiful regardless. We booked a budget hotel in the centre of town which was 50 metres from the beach, but they didnt say that you dont really swim at this beach! You have to go further out of town and then you can find some stunning places to stay. A ... read more

Oke guys here goes, Arrived in Cancun, and to give a short summary : BAD FOOD , HOT AS SHIT , CRUMMY HOSTEL , funny looking people, beautiful beaches. Last night we sat on the main square and listened to a mexican version of Adolf Hitler rant about christianity. We cant wait to get the fuck outta here. Finding food is dramatic seen as all you can eat here are tortillas and burritos, the quality of wich compares to the worst shoarma amsterdam has to offer. Chillin at the beach is our only cool moment of the day, apart from our beautiful airconditioning back at the hostel. Enjoying the beautiful clarity of the Caribean sea. Apart from the beach all you can do here is get hassled by cabdrivers looking to pick you up, or go ... read more

Again, not much to say here as we spent the last few days of basking in the hot sun, swimming, pina coladas and a trip to an island in the mix. We caught a ferry from downtown Cancun and headed to Isla Mujeres to swim in a different clear blue water. We arrived on the island and hired a golf cart, thus ending up hooning around the island like race car drivers… driving 20km (a fast 20km). I actually raced the golf cart and beat it.... maybe becuase im that fast. The island was beautiful, with clear blue water on all sides and was so warm to swim in. after a spot of sunbathing we headed back to Cancun, only to have another swim before we headed out for a few drinks. While out having our ... read more

Back to the land of taco's and tequila, to meet Nadia all the way from Kiwi land. Landed in Cancun, and instantly felt the heat. My jeans came off and the swimwear went on..... There isn't much to say for a few days as it was spent swimming & basking in the hot sun (jealous much?). One day we saw the conservation guys digging up the turtles nests, so went and had a look. He was taking out all the hatched turtles to be released that night. So me being me, i just had to touch one. In the evening out for a walk we came across the guys releasing them out to sea, so we got in there and let some go too, was pretty exciting. On wed we felt it was time to do ... read more
