We’ve been in Mexico just over a week now and we’ve been having a really good time. We started off in a hotel in Cancun just to make things easier to get over the jetlag. Our room was slightly weird but clean and comfortable. The hotel was really quiet so when we went down to the beach there was hardly anyone on there. It was really good just to have a day to completely relax because we had both lost the plot a little due to the jetlag. We also didn’t have a clue how much the Mexican pesos were compared to the pound as we never looked beforehand! Our first meal on the day we got there was in some tacky Americanised shopping and eating complex and was expensive and rubbish but it did the ... read more

Whale sharks! We’re at the pier (it’s a one-pier town) by 7:30 AM. Morning Holbox is slow but not drowsy. There is too much sunlight, unyellowed by the fullness of day, to be sleepy. Multiple boats are readying their passengers and checking their reservation lists. We are with Willy’s Tours and there are 2 Americans (me and Kurt), one Swiss woman, and six Mexicans (three couples from Cancun). That proportion is pretty spot-on for the tourist demographic we see in town. Kurt and I both remark on it; this pleasant, slightly posh beach town has far more Mexican tourists than foreign ones. Which makes it feel much more homey. Our guide, Abram, is a 30-something sweet-faced man who brings along his shy wife (turns out she’s only been out 3 times before!). Our captain is a ... read more

Arrival I fly into Cancun. Fast forward. I get out of Cancun. The bus towers over a bumpy green forest vista, seemingly unbroken but for the occasional flash of a palm frond-roofed hut. At first glance, the crop plots look like just another type of forest but the yellow of maize gives them away. Kurt and I discuss whether or not the other plants we see mixed in with the non-linear rows of maize are weeds or other crop types. We have eight days of vacation-adventure ahead of us. Both Kurt and I will be giving oral presentations on our research at an international conference in Merida. I still need to practice that at some point, time myself and perfect my scientific poise. But for now, we have whale-sharks, ruins, fresh-water underground caverns, Spanish, street food, ... read more

So, we flew to Mexico in hopes of locating a wedding location for our June 2012 wedding. After having the car for all of 5 minutes, literally, James ran through a red light (I believe it was the first one we had seen). In all fairness, the lights in Mexico operate differently than either of us have seen before. We immediately got pulled over, and butchered our way through explaining what happened in espanol. After several minutes, and confused expressions, the officer kindly let us know that the fine for running a red light was well over a few hundred dollars. We tried again, this time with a bit more sincerity and a dash of implied bribary (you know, it's Mexico, sometimes you have to buy your way out), and this time it worked! "Lo siento", ... read more

Looking back at Cancun

A quick escape to the south (April 30th - May 14th 2011) After a busy year at school I was blessed with the time and opportunity to take a vacation with my grandmother. Catalonia Playa Maroma was the perfect getaway. I was looking for relaxation and that is exactly what I got. The hotel was simple, clean and had friendly staff. But more important, it was HOT, HOT, HOT, sunshine every single day! Playa Maroma is said to be one of the best beaches in the world, and I don't blame anyone for making those claims. The sand was baby powder white, the ocean was turquoise blue, and the jungle was abundant and fascinating. The sound of nature was intense. I could not ask for a better vacation at a better time. The peaceful walks I ... read more

Benous Diaz!!! After 10 days we leave Mexico to head back to the grand US of A. I am so keen to get back to the USA, there are so many things I have missed about it already, not that I didn’t have a good time in Cancun/Playa Del Carmen, there were just a few issues that really stressed us out. First of all the plumbing; I am not sure how appropriate it might be to share these stories but the plumbing in both of our ‘5 star’ hotels was shocking. On one occasion the toilet began to overflow with diluted urine (will not mention names, but it was not me) and actually reached the bedroom floors. Melissa’s solution was to simply close the toilet lid…. Who is a dumb bitch? And Kelle’s aka Keller or ... read more

Our last day began relaxing at the pool. Manuel believes...and with a great deal of sense...to only drink from a bottle. Therefore, beer for breakfast when in Mexico. It was a great way to start the day, watching the ocean from the pool with a good book. I wanted to do a little last shopping so we headed to Mercado Venteocho where we were able to get in and out quickly and then on for a final meal in the Hotel Zone. Rebekah had not had a chance yet to see the Hotel Zone and it's one of the areas everyone talks about. The Hotel Zone is kind of like Miami Beach with building on top of building with a Hooters and a variety of other restaurants and gift shops wedged in between. There is a ... read more

Thursday we headed (early again) to Xcaret (ish-car-et) which is about an hour - hour and a half drive from Cancun depending on the traffic (mas o menos). I have learned that in Mexico almost everything is mas o menos...more or less. Anything related to time or money is mas o menos. Xcaret was originally a Mayan city upon which a resort, natural park, semi playland have been built. One of the Xcaret hotels has been in the top ten for Mexico the last two years. It is about 5 miles from Playa del Carmen so it is still in the Quintana Roo province or state. Chichen Itza was in the Yucatan. Xcaret has a natural inlet from the Caribbean Sea. They have created rivers for floating and a short boat experience. They also have available ... read more

After Chichen Itza I needed I day to relax. Rebekah and Manuel only needed a half of a day to recover so they headed off to Playa del Carmen while I read and dozed the day away at the beach and pool. I took a couple of photos from the back of the hotel. One shows the typical dwelling for the people who serve the hotels. It is a block of apartment buildings with more hotels in the background. If you look closely you will see a black barrel on the top of each section of the building. That contains the water for that apartment. Water is in high demand here so they have water allotments. When that runs out of the day, they are done with water for the day. during times of real scarcity ... read more
