"I look best when I'm on holidays"...~ Heh heh. That's my opinion and my opinion only that I look best on holidays. Not sure Al concurs! Happy New Year! Bye bye 2018, and hello 2019. As I type this blog, there are many angry people at home in -30C weather. I'd like to tell you our weather isn't any great shakes here either but I'd be a big fat liar. We've been here 3 days and it's just perfect. Calm, little humidity, no rain, and lots of sun and about 29C. January can be a bit unpredictable in the Riviera Maya & at times windy. Mother Nature knew I was coming and put in a real nice order of sun for me. Oh what power I yield :) I wasn't planning on doing a blog this ... read more

We will be flying home this evening. Our first job is to visit the supermarket for some plane munchies...they never give you enough to eat on those long hauls - especially for someone like me that rarely manages to sleep! We also pick up some last minute presents. No one over the age of ten need get excited as we haven’t bought much. We are just about on the line with our 23kg allowance so there’s not much room for manoeuvre...other than sticking it in hand luggage which can easily cope with another 12 kilos! We just hate having to carry all that stuff around in airports, especially as we have to change planes in Paris. So now to pack our bags. Everything has gone in, with room to spare - we must have done something ... read more

Today is our last full day in Mexico. Ian’s ankle is still sore but better than yesterday. Thank goodness we had anti-inflammatory tablets with us and we wrapped the foot up in the cold towels yesterday. It’s clearly swollen but Ian says not nearly as painful as it was before. We have a slow start to the day as we want to see whether Ian should be resting up or not. Ian decides we will go out. I go to the supermarket for our breakfast croissants and some bits for a packed lunch and we will go to the ferry for the Isla de Mujeres. One last chance to see the MUSA. On the island we can rent a golf cart and go to a snorkelling beach where three of the MUSA statues are submerged at ... read more

I’m very excited because today we are going scuba diving at MUSA. It’s an artificial reef which has been created between Cancun and Isla de Mujeres. Over 500 permanent life size statues from prominent artists have been sunk into the water at quite shallow depths. The idea is that an artificial reef has been created and novice divers can go there. This will help to conserve the natural reefs - ie the novices can kick the statues to bits instead of the coral. In fact, it’s of interest to all levels though, especially divers with an artistic bent, as it’s such a phenomenon. Begun in 2009, more statues are yet to be added...in total there will be 1,200 once the project is finished. The website states that it’s a non profit making venture - it’s a ... read more

Today we take the public bus to the hotel area of Cancun. This is where all the beaches are and also where we can book up some scuba diving. It turns out to be very easy as the bus leaves from the main street just by our hotel. We manage to get the last two seats and settle in for a drive through rush hour traffic. We wanted to be at the scuba centre early before they go out diving for the day! Though there is quite a breeze and out to sea, some impressive white horses, so it’s not certain that diving won’t have been cancelled anyway! We arrive at the dive centre and book our dive at the ‘MUSA’ for tomorrow. It’s an underwater sculpture museum and an unusual dive that I didn’t want ... read more

Today we are leaving Playa and taking our last Mexican bus journey. I can’t say I am not glad to be leaving although the restaurant here was the best yet! Playa is just not our cup of tea. We go for breakfast over at ‘La Junga’. We don’t need a menu - I’m having the vegetarian omelette and Ian is having fruit and yoghurt - I also don’t need to tell the waiter I don’t want beans...he knows! We make a quick Skype call as the internet has not been working for the last 24 hours at our place...very frustrating. Unfortunately for us the restaurant is packed this morning, so it has to be a very quick call! After breakfast we return to our room and spend the morning playing cards until our check out at ... read more

This morning we have planned to return to Puente Esmerelda, the little cenote/lagoon along the beach from our accommodation. It is Sunday, so bound to be busy hence we have skipped breakfast and are ready to set off at 8.30am. The sky is overcast and it has been raining so it’s a pleasant temperature for walking. The beach near our accommodation is fairly deserted. There’s a group of youngsters who have obviously had a night of it. They sway past us exchanging a slurred ‘good morning’! There are also a few people casting fishing nets, though we don’t see much sign of a catch. Finally, we have the ‘beach rakers’. These are the men with the unenviable task of raking up seaweed to enable us holiday makers to enjoy a pristine beach. It’s a thankless and ... read more

This morning we are going out of town to visit a cenote. We pack our day bag and go for breakfast at our usual haunt before hailing a taxi into Playa. The going rate today appears to be 50 pesos. Well I suppose that’s better than 90! It’s normally 35, I tell the driver. No, not for you, he says...it’s 35 for local people. I see, so I’m a gringo so I have to pay more? Si! Well I suppose it’s an honest answer. We take it before he realises we were expecting to be stung for 90! Our taxi drops us opposite the colectivo station where there’s already a queue for Tulum bound minibuses. There’s a long line of vans however, so we don’t need to wait long! We secure the last two seats in ... read more
