Bienvenidos Y'All! So these three quotes potentially sum up our Mexico experience: 1. Larry (South Carolina-Former Hippie-Done Time for Dealing in the 60s-Living Retired Life on The Pacific Coast in Mexico) to Dom & Yvette (your average travel punters) insert southern drawl "Do you guys know what all the pyramids have in common? (dramatic pause) They're all on the same latitude! And why do you think that might be - how on earth could they know? (second dramatic pause) They're road signs for alien ships!" 2. Typical Traveler Dude in Backpackers Hostel: "I tell you man, Tulum without a mosquito net... you might as well just slit your wrists!" 3. American Tourists in Cancun to Dom & Yvette as we rush to get on a bus with our backpacks insert gregarious american accent "Are you ... read more

After a huge thunderstorm we hopped on the bus in acapulco ready for a 7 hour bus ride to Puerto Escondido, after experiencing 7 hours of a leaking air conditioning system and watching 3 english films all dubbed in spanish we arrived to Dan and Carmens cabanas, which i can only describe as paradise. There are about 10-12 private cabanas hidden amongst a jungle of palm trees and when i say cabanas theyre more like apartments with a kitchen,a hammock and dining room and then in another room is a huge bedroom and bathroom, ours over looked the pool and had the most amazing view of the bay, the next floor up was a rooftop terrace where we sat and watched the sunset with a few drinks, all for $15usd each a night! We have been in Hautulco for the last 2 days. Hautulco has been really nice, there are a lot of resorts here but we stayed in a cheaper hotel in the city. We are only about a 15 minute walk to the beach and our hotel was decent. We have lucked out and had sunny days while we have been here. Last night we went out to a pretty good Italian restaurant and had some wine which was a nice change since we have been eating a lot of tacos and quesidillas. We are taking an over night bus tonight to Tapachula, its a city near the border of Guatumaula, we hear that there is not much there so we are going to try and find another bus that will take us across the border. From the sooty city to the sticky coast. Mary and I opted for the cheater-option and flew (on the Mexican version of easyjet called Click) to Puerto Escondido for Mary´s first Pacific Ocean visit. Honestly, there´s not alot to report from here really. We went out to a bar with some people from our youth hostel, which is sandy, hot and noisy; spent the mornings on the beach going a nice northern-European shade of pink; walked the pretty coastal path to the next beach along; took a boat which made me feel incredibly sick to see some sea turtles (which Mary can probably give you a better report of as I was staring persistantly at the horizon - no photos of this as they are on our non-stealable disposable camera); sat in an Italian cafe ... read more

Yep, no culture here!! We decided we wanted to have a few days doing pretty much nothing and this was the perfect spot. We found ourselves a little cabaña with a pool right by the beach and just generally chilled out. But before that..... ....The bus ride from hell!! We thought it would be a good idea to take a second class bus to the beach, as it was cheaper and it took a more direct route meaning it would be shorter. We thought we´d also do this overnight to save on accomodation, and sleep on the bus. NOT!!! The reason why the route was shorter was because it went straight over a mountain, which meant lots of winding mountain road, which = absolutely no chance of sleeping as you were being tossed about in your ... read more

Well what a time its been over the last twenty four hours. I found my way relatively easily through acupulco...sort of. As i was leaving town(and town is really spread out) my electrical system died completely as I rode. So i pulled over and asked about a taller de motocicletas (motorcycle shop) and then paid a cab five dollars to pull me about two miles through town to a small cycle shop...it didn´t look promising. But the mechanico went to work with a multi-meter and diagnosed the battery as the problem.$90 and two hours later i was on my way with new battery (cost 75 dollars). But wait, there´s more... But first be aware that mexico uses ¨topes´ (pronounced toe-pays) which are speed bumps of varying heights, to control speed through small pueblos, little communities that ... read more

Hey, ahhh only a few more days to go!! Crazy! Things have been good since my last entry, I had such a good time in Mazunte. What a perfect place that was. Every morning I would step out my door onto the sand and go for along swim in the sea, and then relax a bit on my front porch (more sand and some hammocks) and then go for some breakfast. The daytime usually involved a lot of walking, swimming, reading, and doing not too much. I walked really far one day and found so many deserted beaches, it was great. I was the only person staying at the Cabañas and the rest of the people around were all Mexican. A few guys at the hotel spoke English though, so I mostly hung out with them. ... read more

We've arrived at surfer's paradise!!!.... Decided to take a lovely air conditioned, first class bus from Acapulco to Puerto Escondido.. which broke down 6 hours into the journey, so we had to swap onto an old, bumpy, hot bus for the last 3 hours!.. It was actually quite nice though (though my back felt the pain for a day or so after!) .. whizzing along the coastal road between the mountains and the Pacific, with the wind rushing through our hair, smelling all of the rural smells as we passed through villages.. wood smoke, food, and the occassional whiffs of cows and sewerage! ... Arrived in Peurto Escondido to find Milan (who we met in Mexico City hostel) and some people he'd met.. so spent some time with them, and other people here.. very friendly place ... read more
