Merry Christmas !! We walked along the coastline today from Bahia Principal to Puerto Angelito around the peninsula. A stepped path takes you along the edge of the coast through rocky coves and to more beaches, with a view of the lighthouse. Puerto Angelito was ridiculously crowded so we walked on to Playa Carrizalillo and this time we descended down the mountain of steps to the small beach for a swim until sunset. Later we had dinner at a place called 'Mangos' at Playa Zicatela.... read more

Another chance to see the Crocodile Lagoon, another day getting up late, another day not being arsed to get a bus miles out of town. We did a bit of organising instead and tried to sort out our bus journey back to Mexico City. Got really lost trying to find the bus terminal and nearly walked to the airport instead! When we did find the terminal they didn't accept credit cards so we had to walk all the way back into town anyway! Oh what fun in the burning heat. (It turns out that the Crocodile Lagoon wasn't far from the airport but we didn't know at this stage :p) Back to the beach again for the afternoon, watching the surf and the sunset.... read more

We were going to go to Crocodile Lagoon, but as we got up late we decided not to go. The local tourist agent had actually directed us to a completely different lagoon miles away, so I'm glad we didn't go! Therefore we were forced to spent another 'terrible' day on the beach, in the sun, and being a gluton for punishment I went bodyboarding again.... read more

Went to the beach today and hired bodyboards for a couple of hours where Louisa showed great promise until she was washed under and sustained third degree friction burns to her abdomen! I continued on until the surf because too powerful (and I was too knackered). The beaches along Puerto Escondido are famed for their excellent surf, particularly on Playa Zicatela which is a magnet for expert surfers who can ride through tubes of water. Even Playa Principal where we went bodyboarding has large waves very close to the shore. You can stand with the water up to your knees and a wave can come over your head! In the evening we ate at El Cafecito which had good food a cool jazzy band playing. We also found a gecko in our bathroom which turned out ... read more

We had a walk over to Carrizalillo beach on the other side of a small peninsula although we were to visit the beach on another day, it was a long walk down from the hills where we took the photo. Had a look round the Hostel Shalom which looked like a really cool chilled out place full of international travellers but cost more than our comfy en-suite room at Hotel Monte Cassino, and required you to sleep outside with the mozzies. We swam in the sea back on Playa Principal where Louisa built an impressive sand pyramid, unfortunately built too close to the sea which washed it away.... read more

Didn't get up til around 10am cos we don't have too :) Not much to do here other than go to the beach, it's a hard life. Really hot sunny day, doesn't feel like it's nearly Christmas. Had a baguette for lunch and had an afternoon nap until 5:30pm then went to walk along the Playa Principal and Playa Zicatela watching the sunset.... read more

Got up, packed up, and walked to the bus station to get the bus to Puerto Escondido on the south pacific coast of Mexico. The bus took hours, we left at 9:30am and arrived at 8:00pm. There was some dramatic scenery on the way but all I've got a photo of is this damn cow. We were met at the bus station by another hotel tout looking to sell us a room for the night. We had another hotel reserved but we decided to take a chance with her, especially when she offered us a free taxi to the place. Fortunately she turned out to be a very nice lady who owned the hotel which was part of an Italian restaurant right across from the main beach, excellent :) Her husband was an entertaining character as ... read more

Heeeey! Five weeks in between blog entries already eh?! If you think Mexicans are lazy, come and have a look at me… So after thoroughly outstaying my welcome in Puerto Vallarta I made my way to Guanajuato, a beautiful beautiful colonial city which owes its wealth to producing a third of the world’s silver for almost two centuries. It was their annual Cervantino festival so the town was pretty packed with visitors. Sadly most of the events laid on were far too highbrow for yours truly so I went out and got drunk with a couple of sound Mexicans down on holiday from Chicago. Guanajuato’s built right into an improbably steep valley so I’d picked a very bad place to start jogging and going to the gym but fear not… I haven’t been in weeks now! ... read more

Well here we are back on the beach! Before I go on I want to thank everyone who has been sending me messages through this site (and those over email as well!) I do appreciate word from home! So we left Oaxaca city just hours after my Monte Alban blog entry, and we engaged in a bus ride that we won´t forget for quite awhile, twists and turns for hours on end, vomiting excellerations and decelerations (sp?) we somehow wound up on the coast again... I can´t even begin to explain what this ride was like, I slept a lot and it wasn´t that big of a deal, but at random points I would look out the window and just see what was (supposed) to be our road, although it looked more like a dirt path ... read more

Like two knights dueling for the hand of a fair maiden, so has Sir Mexico risen to battle for the affection I so recently declared for Guatemala. From the first real encounter with Mexico, at the bus station in Tapachula, I should have realized I had just entered completely different territory, as the terminal was clean, orderly, computerized, efficient, and had toilet paper and soap in the bathrooms. However, after surviving a nail-biting journey to get there .... fights breaking out on the bus to Tecun Uman, warnings about the danger of crossing the border at that hour, missing the last bus to Tapachula and being stopped 3 times by armed police on my solitary taxi ride in the dark .... I wasn't really in the analytical frame of mind. I got to the bus station ... read more
