Loreto, Baja Sur 31st December - 16th January 2018 After the traditional city resort of La Paz, the tourist madness and mayhem of Cabo San Lucas and the remote rural retreats of Mulege and San Ignacio our tour of Baja California Sur terminated in Loreto. Like La Paz, Loreto is positioned on a bay within the Sea of Cortes, protected by numerous small islands. Arriving here reminded me of Goldilocks and the three bears. Whereas La Paz and Cabo are too big for a lengthy stay, Mulege and San Ignacio too small, Loreto is perfect. Because of it's isolated situation, the couple of small neighbouring towns one in each direction on the road are at least an hour and a half away, Loreto is very peaceful but has everything necessary for comfort. My husband suffers from anxiety and PTSD. He learned about a natural substance called Ayahuasca which is found in the Amazonian rainforest. When mixed with DMT as a tea of sorts it produces hallucinations which has been proven to help with anxiety, stress and addictions. I was intrigued by this concoction and decided to join my husband in a series of experiences. And instead of traveling to South America we experienced Ayahuasca in our own space at home. The first night we drank an introductory dose. The "tea" is a thick dark brown liquid with a bitter taste reminding me of middle eastern cuisine. After a long time at sea and then coming home to the snowiest winter in a decade I cannot be happier with the decision Adina and I made to spend a week at an all inclusive in Mexico. Neither of us had done the all inclusive thing before, but I'm sure it will not be our last. Travelling on your own with a backpack and no plans offers some experiences and opportunities that you'll never get any other way - but not having to pack up for a week, being waited on hand and foot, and not having to worry a single second about what things will cost was the most relaxing vacation I've had. Geo: 20.6509, -105.215Our first port stop is today and we are in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Jeff and I have been here several times and we have booked a whale watching excursion. Puerto Vallarta is where Banderas Bay, the 7th largest bay in the world, is located and it is to this bay that the humpbacks in Alaska make their way south beginning in late December/early January through early April. We are at the beginning of the migration. The Bay of Banderas is the breeding and birthing grounds of humpbacks and dolphins and we're hopeful that we'll see some whales.We have a quick bite of breakfast and join our group. Geo: 20.6509, -105.215Ahhhh...our first full day on the cruise and it is a sea day - wonderful! We wake up late and go to the Horizon Court buffet for breakfast. Jeff had what he calls a 'normal person's breakfast' which was eggs, bacon and toast, coffee and cranberry juice. I have oatmeal, fresh fruit, coffee and cranberry juice.After breakfast we start our usual " OMG, we're on a cruise ship and need to pay attention to our caloric intake and expenditure" and we walk around the Promenade deck for about 4 to 5 miles. We're bummed out that both the very front and the very back of the ship have been cordoned off so instead of walking the entire circumference of the ship where 3.2 laps equals a mile, we have to cut across the boat ... read more
