Boca de Tomatlan Tuesday Today was our day to visit Mismaloya, less than half-way from our hotel to Puerto Vallarta. We waited at the bus stop across the street. The stop, a small thatched roof area with plants, was built by the artist who has lived up the hill from the stop for over forty years. We have talked to him in previous years, and saw him at the stop this morning. Very friendly older gentleman. Mismaloya Beach and Puerto Vallarta was just a fishing village, known only to locals, until 1963 when John Houston scouted the area for his film Night of the Iguana. The film, the famous director, and the real-life romance between Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor transformed Puerto Vallarta into a Mexican destination The set and crew quarters are up in the ... read more

Boca de Tomatlan Monday Today was an adventurous day, a three hour walk to Las Animas Beach. We started out by walking down to Boca, past the hill down into town, a little further down the main road, then down some steps to cross the river in Boca. Many fishing boats and shore birds in this area. The path to Animas takes us first to Colomitos Beach. The path has been improved since we were last there, several years ago. More stone steps have been installed, and more railings along the ocean cliffs. But it was still up and down, up and down. Beautiful views of the ocean from the cliff. Last time we were at Colomitos we had the beach to ourselves. Now there is a boardwalk leading to a restaurant hanging over the ocean. ... read more

Boca de Tomatlan Sunday We saw a water taxi going from Boca to Puerto Vallarta this morning while we ate breakfast on the balcony. Later we took the bus into PV, walked around the town and along the Malecon (walk by the ocean). PV seems to be a mix of old and new. Lots of food carts and outdoor booths, old fruit markets, as well as some very fancy, expensive shops and hotels. You can see the mountains in the background, homes up in the hills. Stopped for a snack of fish tacos at an outdoor stand. It has been in the same location for many years and we stop each time we are there. Excellent fish, huge pieces. Walked around the central market, with row upon row of crafts on the main floor, and very ... read more

Boca de Tomatlan Saturday We spent the morning on our balcony, playing a game of Scrabble and watching for whales. We saw a few fishing boats and a tourist pirate ship, but unfortunately no whales. But I did win the Scrabble game (by 4 points), so that was a highlight. The waves were fierce this morning, churning up against the rocks. Noah at the desk said the ocean was angry today. We walked down to Boca again (about a 15 minute walk from the hotel), down a hill into the town itself. We wanted to check out the taco place recommended by Gibran at the desk, located at the bottom of the hill on the right. Unfortunately it was closed. We walked the main street to do a little exploring. A few shops were out of ... read more

Boca de Tomatlan Friday After breakfast on the roof, we walked south on the main road. We could see Old (Viejo) Puerto Vallarta in the distance. Walked by a very interesting old building. It was in total disrepair, but would have been gorgeous in its day. Might have at one time been a hotel. The stained glass windows were broken, but we could look inside and see the old stonework, big arches, and a huge curved staircase with a wrought iron railing. Too bad these old gems aren't kept up. Check-out time at our hotel was 11:00am, and we took the bus across from the hotel to our next destination. We're headed down the coast to the Mar Serano Hotel, just north of Boca de Tomatlan. The first bus took us through a couple of tunnels, ... read more

Had breakfast on the roof this morning, Bob's good coffee, fruit, and muffins. We had the place to ourselves, very peaceful. After breakfast we took off on a three hour walk up north along the beach. There are many accesses to the beach, and you can walk through any hotel area to get there. There are many rock piles jutting out into the water. The waves come in and splash high over them. Great photos if you catch the waves at just the right moment. Saw a guy collecting clams. A few venders were walking the beach, selling jewelry, hats, blankets, etc. They were all very polite and accepted a "No, gracias" with no problem. As we walked the beach, we hit the river. The waves went in and out, but the main river area was ... read more

Arrived in Puerto Vallarta about 20 minutes early, very smooth flight. Weather was very pleasant, about 80 degrees and a slight breeze. Our hotel, Mar Elena, is in the northern hotel zone, very conveniently located. We took a bus from the airport to the hotel, a total of 90 cents! We arrived at the hotel about dinner time. Walked around the area, found a bank where our local bank card actually worked, and discovered a great little place for tacos. Tako's Grill is located close to the hotel, and had some delicious food. Found a big general store around the corner, where we could get fruit and pastries for breakfasts. Back at the hotel we checked out the pool on the fourth floor roof. Very nice view, especially at night. Now that we are settled in ... read more

Vein pyykit pesulaan. Päivämatkan kohde oli Tlaquepaque. Syötiin isot vohvelit. Jukka löysi ostettavaa. Juotiin agavesta tehtyä olutta. Mennen tullen taksilla. Palatessa piti neuvoa kuljettajalle reittiä. Täällähän ei ole autoissa navigaattoreita.... read more

Jukka vei pyykkinsa pesulaan. Mentiin sinne yhdessa. Kaveltiin yhdessa keskustaan ja kaytiin kahvilla. Jatkoin yksin. Hyppasin makrobussiin, jolla on siis oma kaista. Ajoin silla ensin etelaan pain. Palasin hotellille. Oli lento klo 15 Guadalajaraan. Poikkesimme viela aamulla uimassa. Lentokentalta otettiin taksi majapaikkaan. Siina on erikoista se, etta voi heittaa vessapaperit pyttyyn, eika tarvitse laittaa niita roskakoriin, kuten taalla tavallisesti. Kavimme syomassa keskusaukiolla.... read more
