Boca de Tomatlan
Friday
After breakfast on the roof, we walked south on the main road. We could see Old (Viejo) Puerto Vallarta in the distance. Walked by a very interesting old building. It was in total disrepair, but would have been gorgeous in its day. Might have at one time been a hotel. The stained glass windows were broken, but we could look inside and see the old stonework, big arches, and a huge curved staircase with a wrought iron railing. Too bad these old gems aren't kept up.
Check-out time at our hotel was 11:00am, and we took the bus across from the hotel to our next destination. We're headed down the coast to the Mar Serano Hotel, just north of Boca de Tomatlan. The first bus took us through a couple of tunnels, into Old Vallarta. Then we caught another bus going to Boca. The second bus was a beautiful ride along the ocean. Got great views of waves lapping the rocks. It has been a few years since we have been down this road. A few new hotels have been built up, and several are now for sale. Red bouganbilia plants lined part of
the road. We passed through Mismaloya, where Night of the Iguana, with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton , was filmed.
The Mar Serano is one of our favorite spots. We have been here several times. It is an old hotel and could use some update, but the location makes up for it. Bob found a great special online, so we are staying here for seven days. The front of the hotel facing the road has two stories, the back facing the ocean has about nine. We have a very large corner room on the main level, with big windows on two sides. Great view of the ocean, and a very big balcony. We can look down and see the aqua blue water spraying high over the rocks. Couldn't ask for a more perfect location. Heavy forest areas with many butterflies line both sides of the hotel. It is on Bandares Bay (or as Bob calls it, Antonio).
We walked down to the ocean level in the hotel, down winding stairs with lots of jungle-like plants along the way. The pool is several floors below us. Spent the afternoon on the balcony, reading and updating the blog. Kept an
eye out for whales. The guy at the desk said he saw a mother whale and her baby playing in the ocean not too far out. Hope we can see some when we are here.
Took a walk down to Boca for dinner. The road is windy, so you have to be careful and stay to the side. There are some speedy drivers here. We ate at a restaurant at the top of the hill in Boca. Ordered garlic shrimp and fish. I just said fish, and not filet, and I got a whole fish, eye staring at me, hanging over the edge of the plate. We didn't see a menu and didn't know the price beforehand, but we were pleasantly surprised, expecting the bill to be about twice what it was. Funny, chickens and roosters, dogs and cats were running around our table. One cat was sitting at our feet the whole time, looking for some fish. Food was excellent. Found a small grocery across the street. Got four oranges, four bananas, and two baguettes for a little more than $1. Food is cheap here.
