This was my first time in Mexico. We wanted to see certains things in particular for a long time, like the winter home of the monarch butterflies. We also took the challenge, (kidding :-) ), of visiting places in Mexico city. The horror stories about that city, are exagerated. The city of New York is far more dangerous statistically speaking. In Mexico, like other big cities, you need to avoid a few neighbourhoods and use common sense not to attract thieves. We arrived in Mexico city. We stayed in a small hotel named Milan, in the "zona Roma". The area was nice, kind of middle-class neighbourhood, with business people and restaurants and plazas. We visited the "Bosque Chapultepec", a big park in the heart of the city. In the park, you have a mix of little ... read more

The second day we went to Teotihuacan - we really had to practice that for a long time before we could say it right - a huge ruins site about 30 miles north of Mexico City. It took about 1 1/2 hours to get there because of the crazy traffic. Then we went to the museum of anthropology and the National Palace where Diego Riviera murals tell about pre-colombian indian history. Beautiful! However, the poverty outside of the main part of downtown is stark. Market stalls are covered with plastic tarps. Houses are cinder block in various stages of disrepair, many without roofs....a really different way of living. Very disheartening to see so many people living in these conditions.... read more

This morning we caught the ADO bus, first class, back to Mexico City. Initially they couldn´t get the DVD machine working, so they announced that we had a choice to wait another half hour for another bus. Everyone shouted, "No" and then clapped when the bus backed up and started down the highway. The trip is 6 hours and goes through the greatest variety of cactus in all of Mexico. At times it was like driving through a forest of cactus some of it in bloom. I was quite sad yesterday, anticipating leaving Oaxaca City, it is such a beautiful and clean colonial city. In contrast as we approached Mexico city, the sides of the highways were littered with garbage, bottles, plastic, etc. Every night in Oaxaca city the sweepers would be out sweeping the parks ... read more

Hi Folks! At the airport in Mexico city waiting for Colin to find me. In the meantime, a little about Cuba. I had the disadvantage of not having enough Spanish to talk to people, ask questions, except when being taken to the teachers training college (on two separate occassions). A translator went with me, which was brilliant! Among others, I met one of the Cuban women who had gone to NZ to promote the Green Light adult literacy programme that UNITE had hoped to use in courses taught by the Wananga to UNITE members. I got a better sense of what they were trying to do, listened to very long verbal and video presentations of the college. Used to be army barracks in Batista´s time. The tourist areas in Old Havana are a bit like a ... read more

Hola! Today we got the chance to go to the pyramids in Teotihiacan. They were to say the least AMAZING, we took a bus from Pachuca (we are staying with another base here) and headed over to take a look at some history. The ride was about an hour and a half and was only 34 pesos (about $3USD) and then paid the 51 pesos to get into the site. There are alot of people selling things for tourist and you can barter them down which is fun, We climbed to the top of the sun pyramid and the moon pyramid we got to about half way because the rest was roped off. We also walked around looking at all the old ruins and where péople lived. Something we read said there once was a population ... read more

Day 6 The ride to Toluca started off beautifully, we were weaving thru the mountains of Morelia. While traveling thru heavily forested mountain sides we would pass thru several grassy pastures filled with horses and cows lazily grazing the day away. We also passed some small villages that seemed to be in the middle of no where and lost in time. You couldn´t help but wonder how different your life would have been had you grown up here. The further in our journey we got the more the road deteriorated. This was not the 1st class bus like we had taken to Cuernavaca. Not only was it lacking AC and a movie, it also seemed to be lacking vital suspension components. The 800,000 or so speed bumps were having an affect on Laura´s stomach. Her face ... read more

Hola everyone, I am extremely busy here with the end of the semester just around the corner. I had a final exam today in my Literature class, so am now finished with that. I just have the rest of this week and next week of my other classes and then I am finished. However, it's been very busy which means the time just keeps flying by even faster. I want to write about my experiences, but because I don't have a lot of time, this entry is probably going to be shorter and more condensed than I'd like...but here goes. Two weekends ago I went to Mexico City and Teotihuacan with my ISA group. I had been to both before when I went in high school, but was really excited to go back and see everything ... read more

Dost bolo megamesta. Hlavni trida, Trida Mrtvych, vas postupnym stoupanim a pres prekazky dovede k tem nejvetsim perlam archeologicke zony - Pyramide Slunce a nasledne i Pyramide Mesice. Cestou vas vydatne masyruji prodejci suvenyru. V nabidce jsou luky a sipy, krabicka napodobujici zvuk jaguara, seredne sklenene a nabarvene tomahawky, ale hlavne vyrobky z obsidianu - vsechny ... read more
