Day 815 (23.06.09) With the comfort of our homely setting of Kate and Danny's flat it was hard to tear ourselves away but after a nice brekkie we left the apartment to find out what Mexico City had to offer us. Jumping on the tube we made our way south(ish) to the Coyoacan area home to some historical, cultural and horticultural sites. We started off with the large park in Coyoacan which is not only a great place to stroll but is also the nursery for a lot of the Botanical parks and gardens in the city. Not long after stepping foot in the park we were confronted by loads of curious squirrels who were quite happy scuttling within feet of us. Progressing through the park we reached the central 'plaza' and were amazed to find ... read more

So, after a fab dinner in the Condesa neighbourhood last night, in an extremely veggie friendly restaurant (in a working book shop, very funky and the fact that it was mine and Dara's first experience of mole - delicious) we again headed back for an early night (it's tiring work sitting on a tour bus all day long I'll have you know!) So bright and early this morning, up I got to find another fabulous day's weather (the BBC weather forecast really need sorting out, it's torrential rain according to them). Once ready, we sauntered off to the metro (first time on it last night, very excited, that's another one for my 'try and ride every underground system in the world' list ticked off. How anal am I?) to join the overhead train to Xochimilco, also ... read more

We decided last night that there was not enough to merit staying a second night in Puebla so we made a change on the fly (called an audible in American football speak) to our original itinerary. We headed back over to the street with all the talavera shops and picked up a couple of items that hopefully will go with the bathroom in my house--can't remember the color at all, but hey, at least the toothbrush holder and soap tray will look nice. Also picked up some local sweets for the kids--hopefully those make it back without spoiling inside the car over the next week (or getting held up by our ever-vigilant customs officials when entering the US). Just as we were heading out of Puebla the police blocked off the main road so a demonstration ... read more

27th APRIL 2009 - A LOT OF WALKING AROUND RUINS & PYRAMIDS I got up at 8ish, showered and dressed before heading for breakfast. I could only face one slice of toast that morning and filled up on a banana instead. No crazy girl at breakfast though and she had not returned to the hostel...must have been detained! Breakfast over, we finished getting ready and then set out to the tube station with the Czech girl from our room. I can't remember her name so I will just call her Phillipa from now on! We donned our masks for the tube and joined the crowds. Almost everyone was wearing a mask. Quite a weird experience to be honest and not a nice feeling at all!! Don't think I could become a surgeon and wear them for ... read more

26/4/09 = An organising day :( Worst sleep ever, if I even slept at all. Really not dealing well with jetlag. Woke up at 11pm convinced it was morning and hungry for breakfast. When realised it wasn’t even a new day, closed eyes and spent next hours tossing and turning wide awake. Eyes were actually stinging when tried to close them. Then at 3am, door to room opened, light poured in and noticed a large…v.large… figure fill the frame. It was girl talking v.loudly, which I thought was quite rude. Presumed she was drunk so turned over and waited for her to go to bed. 10mins later, she was still shuffling about the room and talking really loudly. Couldn’t see another person, so thought she must have been on her phone = even more rude. Couldn’t ... read more

Well, I´ve made it this far. About 80% of people here at the airport are wearing masks that the army are handing out to everyone - I am most of the time. But it is quite warm and the masks sure don´t help any. I´ll be glad to get out of here, though its not a bad airport. I just discovered thay are one hour ahead of my time, so I have just two hours to boarding time. I had no trouble at all elaving Guatemala or arrivng here. At the airport in Guatemala, I didnt even need my receipt for my ticket, as they found my reservation using my passport. We got here about 8:30 my time, and I guess 9:30 locally. I checked my cary on bags in a locker, so I guess I´ll ... read more

Well this has been an amazing week in Mexico City! Visited Xochimilco, a historic city that used to trade with Tenochitlan. Its known for its canals that were built when the city used to be on a lake. Actually they built the islands (and thus the canals) by using rocks, dirt and then planting trees which rooted in the lake botom and hold up the land. The lake was not very deep. Anyway I took a ride on a boat which was pushed along with bamboo sticks, like Venice, mexico style :) Floating vendors came up often to try and sell to us, lol, and we did buy mariachis! After that I visited Coyoacan and the blue house that Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera lived in. It was pretty cool to see Kahlos bed and wheelchair. ... read more

March 2nd 2009 We had an early wakeup call for our day tour to Teotihuacan. It’s a long drive from the D.F., so we decided to take a bus tour. Our tour consisted of 2 Honduran ladies, one American, 2 Brazilian guys, and 4 French people. Only the French people didn’t share a common language with us - not even Spanish - otherwise, we chatted with everyone. Teotihuacan was not what I expected. It is very restored, a lot of concrete. Metal railings guide you up the sides of the pyramids. If Tikal makes you feel like Indiana Jones, Teotihuacan makes you feel like Mickey Mouse at a Mexican Disney World. It was extremely hot as I had heard, with no shade. I ended up buying a silly Teotihuacan hat just to protect my skin. Being ... read more

The last two Valentine’s Days have started very early for Ronnie and I. Last year we got up at 3:30am to catch the first train from London to Paris. This year we got up at 5:30am to catch the first bus from San Miguel de Allende to Mexico City. The ride itself was uneventful except for watching The Dukes of Hazard in Spanish. We arrived to the bus station called Mexico Norte, bought a taxi at a sitio stand (never catch one off the street in DF) and took it to the Ramada Aeropuerto Hotel. We chose this hotel because it had free shuttle service to the airport for our flight to Puerto Vallarta the following morning. I also wanted to stay there on Valentine’s Day because their color scheme is the color of love…red. Since ... read more
