Dear All Greetings from Mexico City! Mexico City “revisited” as this is the second time I’ve been in this wonderful city, whose population of around 21 million people makes it the second largest in the world after Tokyo. In fact, and as mentioned in my last blog, I came here on my first backpacking trip 18 years ago, on my first trip also out of Europe. The place holds many memories for me, as this is pretty much where it all began, where I was bitten and forever smitten by the travelling bug, and it is just a sincere pleasure to be back here again. You could say I’ve come full-circle in my travels, but actually my plans include hopefully many more travel circles yet to come! So I arrived here on Tuesday evening, in style ... read more

Oli vuorossa Teotihuacan Cesarin kyydissä. Aurinko paistoi. Lämmintä reilut 20 astetta. Eikä paljon väkeä kun oli tiistai. Ihanteellinen päivä siis. Kiivettiin korkeimman pyramidin paalle. Vierailun lopuksi pari koululaista pysayttivat meidat. Heilla oli tehtavanaan haastatella turisteja englanniksi. Palatessa oli tiellä jo ruuhkaa. Oaxacalainen ravintola. Pulahdin hotellin uima-altaassa.... read more

Day 2 and I woke at the crack of dawn. 5.30 am, which NEVER happens - I simply don't *do* mornings!! The boy wasnt far behind me and we felt quite lively. After collecting my BILs son we headed out for barbacoa for breakfast which was a great experience. Proper Street food on the side of the road at plastic tables. The food was absolutely delicious maybe helped by how hungry we were!! Then we headed out to Xochimilco. The organisation was chaos, but once we were on all organised it was fabulous. If you haven't been or seen, it's a very traditional Mexican Sunday lunchtime event. We took a brightly painted boat decked out with table and chairs on a cruise down the river we had ours to ourselves- me and the boy, my sister ... read more

Today was our travel day. Our party consisted of me, (an overweight 44 year old) and my lovely (ginger and therefore burns super easily)10 year old son. We are spending 3 weeks in Mexico with my sister and her husband who live in Mexico City. The plan is to spend the first two weeks around Mexico City and out to surrounding areas and the last week in Acapulco. We left a miserable Heathrow on the busiest Saturday of the year to make the 11 hour 20 minute flight to Mexico City. Due to a "too good to refuse" upgrade offer we travelled in British Airways' Premium Economy section aka World Traveller Plus. It was fantastic. Seats were super and food was great, but what really made it was the air stewards. We had 3 chaps who ... read more

I must confess I am doing the photos from the Christmas trip ... they are 2 months old but I just didn't have the ....technology ,time ,inclination... to do them before . It is all a good exercise for me though as I get to relive/remember some of what Mexico has to offer . Cuernavaca is well known to many in Regina as people here have been helping the poorest of that area make life a bit easier . The city itself has attracted the rich and the powerful for centuries . Cortes built his Palicio here in 1522 and the Emperor Maximillian and his wife used the city as a retreat during their reign . It is cooler here than in Mexico City and that offers a respite during the summer months. Besides it is ... read more

Feeling well-rested after yesterday's diversion we showered and headed to Mercado Roma in the Roma neighborhood, which is known as D.F.'s bohemian neighborhood. The market itself is higher-end and consists of two floors of food stalls from various local restaurants and businesses. The third floor is a beer garden. While the market was open at 10 when we went, many of the vendors didn't start serving until 11:30. Luckily El Moro Churrería was serving, so we sat down to café con leche and some churros with cajeta (a thick, Mexican syrup of sweetened caramelized milk)for dipping. I'd never actually seen how churros were made - they pump the dough through a contraption similar to a sausage-making machine and directly into a vat of oil for frying. They then cut them into smaller pieces. We are hoping ... read more

Iltalento Meridaan. Kuivien vaatteiden keruu, pakkaaminen. Aamiainen läheisessä kauppahallissa. Cesar osti viela ruokaa itselleen. Käytiin Cesarin vanhempien luona. Sinne oli reilun tunnin ajomatka, ja mentiin jo paakaupungista naapuriosavaltion puolelle. Kaytiin koko porukalla läheisessa puistossa. Tarjottiin ruokaa. Cesarin isa on muurari ja han on rakentanut talonsa itse. Kentälle mentiin ajoissa. Kaytin Volaris-yhtiota, jossa sai ottaa mukaan kaksi matkatavaraa. Meridan kentalta menin hotelliin taksilla, koska kello oli jo 22, eika huvittanut selvittaa halvempia vaihtoehtoja. Ehdin viela kierrella lahikortteleissa. Oli hiljaista.... read more

I had to temper my expectations upon visiting Teotihuacán and learning the origin of the site's name. Very impressive place and a great way to wrap up 5 weeks in Mexico and the last 5 weeks of The Trip To End All Trips. I was back in the US for ~3 weeks, slightly shocked and chagrined, bouncing around between Seattle, Florida, and Phoenix. The shock and chagrin was fleeting as I took off for The Next Trip To End All Trips at the end of May. US$ ≈ 13 Mexican pesos (M$) Accommodation and food I reserved a couple of nights at Hostel Amigo Suites through booking.com then extended for 4 more in person. The location was great, a few minutes walk from the zócalo and metro stop. A night in a 4 person ensuite dorm ... read more
