San Cristobal De La Casas (Mon to Thur.) San Cristobal de las Casas is one of Mexico’s oldest post-colonial cities, located 37 miles east of the state capital, Tuxtla Gutierrez, in the heart of the Chiapas highlands. Established as a settlement in 1528, this city continues to be home to an ethnically diverse population, whose cultures and arts have been preserved. The city’s main appeal lies in its diverse architecture and plazas. We departed Palenque at the very civilised hour of 9am, embarking on a 5 hour bus trip to reach our next destination, San Christobal de las Cases. The scenary on the way was incredible, we were high up in the mountains so it was foggy with lush forest and small villages and settlements dotted around. Lots of animals too and Mexican cowboys! It looked pretty cold outside and our arrival in San Christobal confirmed this. We are told this was an unseasonable cold snap but it was colder than we liked - we even stopped and purchased hats and scarves from a street stall. We imagine they made a killing as they refused to negotiate price - why would they... buy it or go cold. Hmmm ... tough decision. The cold snap disapeared the next day ... read more

Thought I had better take a break from the sun and update you all a little. This is quite a large Mayan town up in the mountains. It's beautiful but with us staying pretty much right in the town centre it's extremely busy. On the very top of the hill there is a church, This is the focal point for the whole town. Today is one of the Church's major festivals. The last few days we have seen loads of people coming from other local towns offering gifts for the festival. Hundreds upon hundreds of people carrying torches up the mountain towards the church. People setting off fireworks in their hands (really!). Lots of trucks full of people beeping their horns and flashing their lights. Pretty amazing stuff to watch. Unfortunately the local people here do ... read more

We had a difficult time procuring a ride to Ocosingo; it took a while but finally in the late afternoon a sedan-type car with two friendly looking Mexican men pulled up and said they were going as far as 20KM before Ocosingo. We had been trying for an hour and grabbed the opportunity to get closer to our goal for the night. The men dropped us off in a Podunk town exactly two hours after we had started. We were 20KM from Ocosingo, just as they had said. With our next ride we reached the big town of Ocosingo. The driver of this small car was a young college kid from Tuxtla heading back home alone. He was yet another nice, if quiet, young man. We only had to walk a few blocks from the highway ... read more

I arrive into San Christobal de la Casas– a gorgeous little village high in the mountains...first thing in the morning. It is such a pretty little place. Back home – the UK is going into Union Jack bunting overdrive for the Jubilee weekend. Here the Mexican village has strung a dainty, peach coloured doily cut bunting that criss crosses the cobbled streets and laces between the pastel painted houses. In the main square there is a Sweets market that Willy Wonka would be proud of. Tables are piled high with sticky marzipan fruits, lollipops and syrupy sponges – all thickly dotted by a moving blanket of wasps. In the background are the dark green smoky hills. In the Zocolo are stalls selling carved wood animals, embroidered clothes corn on the cob and churros – all manned ... read more
