Our journey

Minor update. We have just survived a 400m and 150m zip-line between two rather large mountains. We all loved it, apart from Carey who cried and wet herself a little.... read more

So we have done so much in such a short time that I can only list the key points. Between Flores and Antigua we stayed in the jungle for a few days at a place called Lanquin. We did not have internet and electricty and water were intermittent. We went to a place called Semuc Champey which is a natural limestone bridge which has caused a serious of natural infinity pools stepping down in the mountains. The modes of transport we encounter as we travel deeper into Guatemala are becoming increasingly interesting. There is definately no Spanish phrase for 'I'm sorry this vehicle is full' We were transported to Semuc in a pick up truck. In the back. In tropical rain. About 30 of us. For an hour. On an unpaved mountain dirt track. With 500 ... read more

We hope everyone at home had an amazing Christmas. It was great to speak to those of you who we could get hold off and apologies to anyone we couldn´t. The technology on Caye Caulker was not so great so we tried our best. Christmas was lovely. We went to the beach, had a piggy breakfast and lunch and then went to a barbecue Christmas dinner party at night (we still had turkey and cranberry sauce!) On boxing day we did a full day snorkelling trip. We got to snorkel along the second largest coral reef in the world. We swam with sharks (I touched one) Stingrays (we all touched one) and sea turtles (super cute) Rum Punch was included and Mark and I made sure we got good value for money and both ended up ... read more

Hi guys, Lots to report, been on the go so haven't had internet for a while. Not sure where we were up to on here so I will do a full report. Merida - a beautiful colonial, truly Mexican town where we were just before the wedding. This was one of the most friendly places we have ever been. The city had a beautiful central square where the town would sit and watch the world go by (nobody hurries in Mexico EVER) Just sitting there we were approached by locals, not to sell us anything or harass us but just to chat. To tell us information about their city or to practise their English. We got to see a Mexican wedding and we got to witness the Fiesta at the weekend when the centre closes to ... read more

North America » Mexico » Quintana Roo » Playa del Carmen December 19th 2012

Sorry about the lack of updates over the last few days, it's been pretty hectic since we arrived in Playa Del Carmen. First, a little about the town. As you can imagine, it's pretty touristy and full of Americans. So much so that there are cash machines that dispense dollars everywhere (outnumbering the peso machines by about 3:1). It's quite a nice place to go out for drinks and a good time, however compared to the rest of Mexico it's expensive. Everything is on average 25% more by the sea, although if you move a few roads further back the cost reduces a lot. We managed to find my mother-in-law (always a pleasure!) and arranged to meet Jess (bride to be) later on that afternoon. Typical girls-meet-up-on-the-beach occasion so I made myself scarce and checked out ... read more

North America » Mexico » Yucatán » Merida December 14th 2012

We are now in Merida. San Cristobal was one of the most amazing places I have ever seen. The people are beautiful and the city is too. We could have taken the most amazing pictures but the Mayans believe that if you photograph them you steal their soul so we have none. The region does not really see tourists to our pigeon Spanish had to be accompanied by many mimes in order to get by - the most amusing being the mosquito dance in order to get insect repellent. Canon Sumidero was breathtaking - we were 4 foot from live crocodiles. One jumped in the water suddenly. Staiz jumped 3 foot of the floor. Yesterday morning we got a very early bus to Palenque - a largely unexcavated Mayan city that covers 25km square. Only thing ... read more

North America » Mexico » Chiapas » San Cristobal de las Casas December 12th 2012

Thought I had better take a break from the sun and update you all a little. This is quite a large Mayan town up in the mountains. It's beautiful but with us staying pretty much right in the town centre it's extremely busy. On the very top of the hill there is a church, This is the focal point for the whole town. Today is one of the Church's major festivals. The last few days we have seen loads of people coming from other local towns offering gifts for the festival. Hundreds upon hundreds of people carrying torches up the mountain towards the church. People setting off fireworks in their hands (really!). Lots of trucks full of people beeping their horns and flashing their lights. Pretty amazing stuff to watch. Unfortunately the local people here do ... read more
