Seasons Greetings to you all! Clinton and I are currently in Canada's capital, Ottawa, visiting our good friend Derrick for Christmas. (For those who do not know him, we met him in Jacksonville when he was posted there too. We drove up here a couple of days ago, stopping at Lake Placid, NY (home of a couple of Winter Olympics, in case you're wondering where you'd heard of that before) to "warm up" for our snowboarding season ahead. Unfortunately the snowfall in this part of the world has been virtually non-existant, which is very unusual for this time of year, so the snow we were boarding on was of the delightful icy man-made type. What was there was spread in strips down the mountain, with the surrounding areas bare. Quite a weird thing to ride the ... read more

Christmas Eve in Canada and we're off skiing at Lake Louise. It's Canada's 2nd largest resort, only roughly HALF the total size of Whistler/Blackcomb. Considering that it doesn't really get light until after 9am and gets dark around 4pm, it sure eats into the ski time! Add to that the logistics of gearing up with rental gear...we were on the slopes at about 11:30am! We were in the rental department (Lake Louise only has one rental outlet!!!) for close on, if not slightly more than, one hour. Lesson for Lozza Lauren likes getting lessons from me instead of the ski school. So I took her up the t-bar for the first ride and she did well getting up. The first few runs were slow and tentative, but she was getting the hang of it very quickly. ... read more

Kelvin’s knee was too sore to ski today so I had to hold my own with these little ski devils. Fortunately they are more capable than me and can still have a good time wherever they ski. A little time in the hot tub sure felt good après ski. Christmas eve-ning was a little supper and a bowling tournament on the WII. Kurtis beat us all but it was really fun. A couple of gifts and a game of Monopoly sent us all to bed early. Overnight Santa was good to the skiers with about 6 inches of snow ... read more

Bilton Christmas 2006 A few pics from last night's proceedings - a good time was had by all, and fine food was consumed. There were many highlights, but the one that stands out in my mind was the general thumping I delivered at the pong table! On the receiving end - Sam and Tim! Of course, there is such a thing as writer's license, and my memory may be a little selective! 10-Jan-07: Sorry for the delay in publishing this entry - I thought I had, and was starting to wonder why nobody had said boo. Thanks to Carolyn for letting me know! ... read more

Its really hard to believe that its Christmas in 2 days! Although its very atmospheric with all the lights in the pine trees, and even though I’m constantly humming cheesy Christmas songs in my head after listening to them all day at work, it just doesn’t feel like Christmas! Perhaps it’s the sub zero temperatures, or the notable lack of the smell of mangoes, gardenias and jasmine in the air, and very much the fact that my family and friends are on the other side of the world… oooh I think the homesickness is setting in!! I wish you all a very merry Christmas - be sure to have a few prawns for me and soak up some sunshine. Oh yes there’s something else that we’re lacking here! I am really missing you all and will ... read more

The Great Crossing We packed our expanding suitcases into the van and left Nusalya behind with a forecast for miserable weather for the whole west coast area and headed to where the sun was still shining. In winter, the trip across British Columbia is very pretty yet fairly boring as most parks and tourist attractions are closed under a mantle of crisp white stuff. Danger of landslides, avalanches and flooding scares the hardiest people away. Fern Glade Cache We were getting a bit cramped and needed to stretch our legs, so the rest of the mob decided to let me go find a cache to relieve the boredom and stretch the legs a bit. Though as we took the detour to the carpark for the Bridal Falls, there was a big yellow sign telling us that ... read more

Alright it's time to tell you all about my Jasper park lodge adventures. All the staff that was working the party got up bright and early. Well bright and early for us since we are all evening workers and usually don't get up until noon-ish. We loaded ourselves with caffine to make it through the day and boarded the bus. The ride was long but we were all fairly excited so the 3 hours flew by. I actually saw my first real wildlife out here. I was scanning the forest determined to see an animal besides road kill and all of a sudden right on the side of the road was a wolf! Yep a wolf! They must be lurking about everywhere lately because one of my friends saw one down by our collegue services building ... read more
