Love it, love it, love it! Admittedly i did get good weather which, apparently, is relatively rare for Vancouver but I have thought my way around this for if I can move here....when it rains in the city it snows in the mountains - Perfect! I arrived to bump straight in to Pheobe - who i had met in Seattle - and opted to go out for a few wee beverages......there were some fab deals on at the bar beneath the hostel - so we made full use of the opportunity! Needless to say the next morning was a late one - but when we finally got our acts together it was still in need of a lovely leisurely day! (with the illustrious Jon from Fraser Island coming too!) Thus we opted for Gastown - ... read more

My journey to Brazil began in January at home in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan while searching the internet for countless hours for an opportunity where I could contribute technical knowledge and skills to an international sustainability project. Eventually I came across Amigos de Iracambi, a Brazilian non-profit civil that works to promote the conservation of the Atlantic Rainforest. Taking a cutting edge approach to sustainable development, the organization established the Iracambi Research Center (IRC) to work with the local community in the municipality of Rosario da Limeira to figure out ways that both forests and people can flourish and find better ways of managing the land. Research at the Iracambi is focused in four directions: 1. Geographic information system (GIS) development for land management; 2. Environmental education and community outreach; 3. Local alternative income... read more

Lledrod Llansilin, Wales North America » Canada » Ontario » Kingston By Sailboarder_98May 15th 2007 We departed Montreal for Manchester via Zürich. I bought a bottle of gin and a bottle of scotch in Montreal and security confiscated it in Zürich. I said, "Have a good party!" She smiled!!! In Manchester we rented a car and took a one-hour drive to Wales where an old friend lives...in hedegrow country in a house that is 800 years old!! She has a son and a daughter (who stayed with us in 1973 when she was 17!!!) We had a lovely time with them. Her husband died seven years ago and she looks after the estate by... read more

Hello Everyone Just a quick note to let everyone know that we have arrived safely in Vancouver (yep, they let me through customs!!). First impressions of Vancouver are good; the city is very pretty with the mountains in the background (still with some snow) and the harbour. The city does seem surprising clean. We spent Friday walking around down town doing the little compulsory odd jobs such as bank accounts, state insurance numbers (i.e. tax numbers) and cell phones. So the number for my phone is (778) 997 2932. To text from NZ you add 001 in front of the number. One strange thing about cell phones here is that you have to pay to receive calls as well as sending them - so please only text me!! We are still sorting out accommodation for after ... read more

WELCOME TO MY 2nd VOYAGE OF DISCOVERY. Fri 4th May: Left Sydney on time. However, just as we were taking off there was a god aweful noise from the under carriage and all of us in Economy Plus looked at each other. The cabin crew were aware of the noise and then the subsequent vibration. Much talking and visits from the Captain and Co Pilot and we continued our journey across to San Francisco. However, the noise was aweful as was the vibration through our section of the plane. There were no emergency lights on nor any other warning system to say "turn around". However, a decision was made 8 hours into the flight that we would put down at Honolulu due to drag on the underside of the plane. The nightmare experience continued at ... read more

Hi... read more

UntitledSo here I am, 4 days before I leave on my first big international trip of my life. It's an exhilerating feeling to be going on an adventure like this. Here is the outline of my trip: May 17th: Arrive in Quito, Ecuador (given time 9:45 pm). Then onto the Secret Garden Hostel where I will be spending three nights before I head out to volunteer. May 18th-20th I will be in Quito, touring New Town and Old Town. My hostel is in Old Town and is said to have some of the most beautiful colonial architecture. However, it can be rather scary at night. On the bright side, my hostel is in a relatively guarded area and is rated number 1 four years in a row. Pretty awesome. If for some reason the situation arises ... read more

Tomorrow it begins. After all these recent emotional rollercoaster days, spent half in laughter, half in tears, I feel strangely flat today. On the weekend I discovered I'd broken my digital camera screen, so I think that disappointment dampened things a little. But thanks to my cousin's great advice, I know that if my camera lets me down, my sketchbook will be there instead. And I guess that's much more romantic anyways - one does not sit outside a Paris cafe and take pictures; one sketches, of course. These trials can seem overwhelming at first, but they won't stop me from enjoying myself. This trip has been years in the making, and I know that I'm exactly the right kind of person to enjoy every moment. One of our travel guides says that in Europe, ... read more
