UntitledAfter breakfast we took a tour of Old Montreal where we learned the history of a very and architecture of the city. We then had lunch and headed straight to a meeting with local teachers. The meeting was great and a lot of information was shared about the school systems in Montreal. Since Montreal is in the Province of Quebec the school system is the same as Quebec City with the French school system and the English school system. After dinner we had dinner headed straight for the Montreal Jazz Festival. The Jazz Festival is an incredible music event which has mulitple concert stages set up around the city and play live music for free. I went to at least four different stages and heard classical jazz, hip hop jazz and flamenco. Its great to see ... read more

UntitledWell this morning we went on a tour of the Plains of Abraham, which was where the British defeated the French in Quebec, whereby changing the history of that area forever. It was interesting learning about the military movements and about a war that took 20 minutes. After lunch we headed for Montreal by bus. It was a beautiful drive and we saw a lot of the countryside of the province. Montreal...driving in was a big change from Quebec City. Montreal is a metropolitan with many skyscrapers. After arriving to our hotel we went to dinner at an excellent restaurant which had an amazing variety of desserts. My favorite were the profiteroles filled with ice cream. After dinner we went to a light show at the Notre Dame Basilica. Let's just say the light show was ... read more

Bonjour, cava? We arrived safely in Toronto late last Saturday evening, after a particularly horrible domestic flight from San Francisco (who would have thought USA to Canada was domestic?), and after being collected by our friendly host, settled in for the night in our lovely new hostel, ready for an exploration of Toronto, and then Niagara Falls in a day's time. Canada is our last country before we head home, and although the neighbours next door looked slightly like they were running a drug's den and were nasty bits of work (it turned out they were and they are), we were excited about being here for a fresh adventure. Unfortunately overnight James was struck down with a nasty flu-like virus which manifested itself in aches, pains, a headache and a raging fever, leaving him bed ... read more

Beautifully French North America » Canada » Quebec » Montreal » Old Montreal By Sazzle DazzleMarch 19th 2007 After a truley emotional time in Toronto we were then welcomed by a very French speaking capital only 6 hours away from the truley modern Toronto city. After having to rebuy tickets, find our way around using minimul French and sleeping crookedly on a bus we arrived at our beautifully French hostel on St Vincent Street (Le Sois Bois). The first day we arrived we met the most sweetest Mexican couple who made such an impact ... read more

Arrived in Montreal, what a relief. Just felt loads better being able to see open sky and trees, guess I am just not a city person. Montreal is lovely, people really friendly, even the bus driver gave us an impromptu guided tour! It is also very laid back and quite European looking with historic buildings and narrow streets and loads of restaurants. We visited the Olympic Stadium (from 1976) and the Biodome which has four habitats including a tropical and Antarctic area. There is a bat cave and even some anacondas (which thankfully were behind glass!!). Today we walked up Mont Royal (Royal Mountain), Montreal was named after it. Basically a park on a large hill with a Chateau on top. The building was built to commemorate the first visit to Canada of the current Queen’s ... read more

Quebec City and Montreal Yes Poutine was eaten and arteries were hardened. I forgot everything people told me about THE place to eat poutine so think i may have missed the best version of this dish... when you think about it the chips and gravy is not a strange concept to us Aussies its the cheese curds that throw me. I couldnt get over how 'french' the province of Quebec really is and it kind of makes more sense of the whole French separatist thing here in Canada. But is is beautiful So much like being in Paris itself. Old buildings, cobblestone streets, street cafes and wonderful bakeries. Quebec city is an older city compared to Montreal and I think i liked Montreal's mix of old and new more. I met a friend from the salty ... read more

hi everyone, so since last i wrote alot of miles have been clocked up The first of innumerable unforgettable and special moments of the following three weeks happened as Aiden emerged from the gates of Auckland International Airport. It was sooooooooooo AMAZING to see him again and under such circumstances, thanks babe! Auckland holds many surprises: Rangitoto Island just off the coast and our Thomas the tractor engine journey to the summit for some really cool views of the city skyline; A rendezvous at the theatre to see the Kiwi performance of Take Me Out; a comedic tradegy about the effects the coming out of a gay baseball superstar has on him, the team, etc (warning - this performance contains nudity...... bring it on!) I'm writing this as the hostel is pumping out The Blue Album ... read more

Mon 6th Aug 2006 Hi everyone, thanks to those of you who have left messages, it was great to hear from you. We left Toronto at about 10.45am yesterday wth Di driving to go to Ottawa in our lovely blue HHR Chevvy We travelled down highway 401 leaving at Bellvile to take the even more beautiful route by the side of Lake Ontario passing Picton. On reaching Glenora, the road ended and meant taking the 'free' ferry trip across to Adolphustown. (See photo) We then stopped at Kingston which was the capital of upper and lower Canada between 1841 and 1843. (Had to be done due to Lou's surname!!) After lunch by the Marina, (see photo) Lou took over the drive to go the remaing distance to Ottawa - using highway 416 which is the Vetarans ... read more

So this past weekend I went to Montreal with a bunch of my roommates. It was really nice. The city is gorgeous! One thing I noticed right away was that it didn't smell at all like most large cities do, at least the section I was staying in was fine. Everyone had a front garden no matter how small a piece of land they had. The first night there I went with a friend down to the notorius St. Catherine Street. It was a lot of fun and not nearly as sketchy as I expected it to be. There was a lot of stuff to see especially since this weekend had been the Out Games so there were drag queens everywhere! The second day me and my roommate went to the Biodome! It was a lot ... read more
