Started our day on PEI by touring Green Gables Heritage Place – the house that was the setting for the book “Anne of Green Gables”. We saw a short film, took a tour, toured the barn and house and walked in the Haunted Wood. The house and farm were owned by cousins of LM Montgomery (the author) grandparents, who raised her. She lived a short distance away and spent time there growing up. Anne was also there and we watched her and friend Diana act out the part from the book where Diana drinks the raspberry cordial and gets drunk. We went to Cavendish Beach and finished the kids Xplorer program. We learned a little about bees, lobsters and other shellfish and played in the red, rocky sand. Rick and Maggie built a stone house. Today is New Brunswick Day (the first Monday in August) which is a day off for many. We aren’t really sure what NB day is – but discovered that everywhere in Canada has this day as a holiday – some call it Civic Day, others after their province, one after a person. Canada Day is July 1, so this isn’t their national independence day, but as it is the same date nationwide it can’t be a province anniversary. So, just a day set aside to celebrate your province! But they were handing out Canada 150 flags – celebrating Canada’s 150th We started with a walk of the bog in Kouchi, which included a tower to view the area. We hoped to see moose, but didn’t. We went to Callander’s Beach and visited the Migmag wigwams. To ... read more

Author's Note: This piece contains reflections and recommendations based on a recent stay in Prince Edward Island as well as some haiku that I wrote while inspired by the sublime island scenery. If you like my poetic musings, see also url=https://www.amazon.com/Mountain-Springs-Vermont-William-Graham-ebook/dp/B017Z3FEZA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1466854466&sr=8-1&keywords=mountain+springs%3A+haikuMountain Springs: Haiku from Vermont. I concur with St. Augustine who wrote: "The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page." My travel "library," so to speak, was enhanced by a return trip to Prince Edward Island (PEI) during the first two weeks of June 2016. My family (wife and 13-year-old son) and I had previously visited the island in 2014 and were so entranced that we had to return. This time we rented a peaceful house in a small speck of a community calle... read more

Somewhere I read that in PEI, your heart rate will slow, your smiles will last longer, and you'll sometimes forget where you left your shoes. We just got here and it's already happening. How can it not when every drive takes me past gabled farmhouses, gentle sloping hills and seaside villages? It is so peaceful and bucolic here. Each curve of the road brings a new panorama into view. Today serendipity brought us to Rustico, at first glance a salty little fishing village. But look harder and you'll discover that it's actually a popular tourist area. We popped in to get a coffee and found a long, red sand beach that was shallow and warm. It was hidden behind sand dunes and we only found it when we went for a walk in that direction. There ... read more

Ever since taking two hiking trips to Newfoundland (affectionately known as “The Rock” to locals) a few years ago, I vowed to explore more of the Canadian Maritime provinces, which boast stunning scenery, a fascinating brew of cultures and very warm and welcoming people. This summer I returned to this wonderful part of the world with my wife Jacqueline and our 11-year-old son Jackson. We made the long car ride across the endless forests of Maine and New Brunswick to spend a memorable sojourn on Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.) and Cape Breton Island (which is part of Nova Scotia). Like many young girls, Jacqueline became enamored with the novels (and subsequent public television adaptations) of Lucy Maud Montgomery, who created the memorable heroine Anne Shirley of Green Gables. Make no mistake, the province of P.E.I. couldn’t ... read more

You don’t go to PEI and not take in an attraction involving Anne of Green Gables. You’re not going to find Avonlea, the place where Anne Shirley lived, because she’s a fictional character. What you will find is tributes to the author Lucy Maud Montgomery who wrote Anne of Green Gables and had the first book published in 1908. There is a provincial park in Cavendish dedicated to this and onsite there is a house and barn and trails that are similar to the ones L.M. Montgomery encountered when exploring the nearby farm owned by her cousin’s Grandfather. These are the ones that inspired Avonlea in her books. We also found a bookstore run by a descendent of the McNeils, the Grandparents who took L.M. Montgomery in when she was young. Almost all of the little ... read more

It’s the first day of fall but even with the strong winds the temperature is still very comfortable. We headed out today to see if we could find 3 geocaches located on an lsland called Lennox Island. Turns out the island was on native land and the stop sign at the main intersection was in some kind of Native Tongue. After probably 3 km of walking on a nicely groomed trail we found 2 of the 3 caches. Some of the trails led to a beach, and others went through the middle of a huge blueberry patch. We decided it was early enough to try a set of caches on a nearby peninsula. Unfortunately, as we sat and ate our lunch at the Jacques Cartier Provincial park gates where they were, we discovered the closest one ... read more

Day 7: Got off at about 8:50. We headed east along the north coast of PEI. We went through PEI NP. It had interesting beaches and a couple of lighthouses. There are a bunch of “very unique” lighthouses on PEI that all look exactly the same, well, almost the same, one had an octagonal foot print while all the rest had square footprints. There are LOTS blue mussel aqua culture arrays in the bays. They hang a “mussel sock” from a bouy and set them up in long lines. The mussels attach to the sock and the “mussel men” then harvest them. Kerry drove about 200 miles today, and we never left the Island. Sure was glad that we took sandwiches along, because there were almost NO places where we could have bought lunch!. The weather ... read more

Woke up that morning and my roommates were still sleeping so I slipped out of the room quietly. Reception recommended a small diner nearby for breakfast. The food was not really that good and I believe they gave me old eggs as well :(. I quickly packed a day pack with what I would need for my day in PEI. I went to Budget rent a car to get my small car which turned out to be a Fiat 500. I have never driven a 2 door car before so it took some getting use to but I made it out of Halifax without any problems. On the highway the Fiat didn't have a great deal of acceleration so I will have to remember that. To make sure I wouldn't get lost I brought my GPS ... read more

... just a continuation of our earlier blog from Maine. We crossed the border pretty late at night into ST. ANDREWS BY-THE-SEA VILLAGE. As mentioned in an earlier blog we are on our way to Prince Edward Island from Connecticut, but there is no timetable so we are literally just going with the flow. Earlier that night we found a pretty good deal on the FAIRMONT ALGONQUIN HOTEL IN ST. ANDREWS. It's a beautiful old hotel with beautiful rooms. We really liked it. Well it's just an hotel (unfortunately there is too much to see and do in general so we generally spend very little time in hotels) and the next day we were on our way again. We cruised around town in St. Andrews and were really impressed by it's coziness. Reminded us of a ... read more
