The first morning that we woke up in Niagara we discovered that our hostel was only five minutes walk from the falls, we had to walk through the (tacky) town to get there, but we were there quickly . The town (at least on the Canadian side) is very Blackpool-like, with some really silly attractions that re just there to make money. However the falls are great and on the first day we went on the Maid of the Mist boat ride. We both really enjoyed this. Afterward we went for a drink and Elaine got really upset, she said she did not know why she was upset but said that she could not eat and she cried quite a bit. I tried to make her feel better, but i guess i didn't manage it too ... read more

Early morning on Sunday the 9th of October we got a train for Niagara falls, it was meant to be a nine hour trip. With hindsight we probably should have looked for a greyhound bus because the train took a long way round to reach Niagara, and we probably could have got there quicker by bus. Anyway, we just wanted out of New York and as soon as the train left the station we were both feeling better. I think this helped Elaine even more, she had hated it so much in New York that just the train chugging out of the station seemed to raise her mood. We got talking to a middle aged woman on the train who was very friendly and talked to us for much of the way (despite the length of ... read more

Hi again.......I hope u all miss me by now, hahaha. Well i must say that i have been a busy boy lately. School is going well and i have been away for the weekends. On the 18th we went off to Niagra falls. The falls are abosultely breath-taking but the area around it is very commercial, sort of like a mini mini las vegas (although there was a town called niagra on the lake which was quite a charming little place with vineyards and old victorian style houses). Nevertheless the falls were cool, especially the boat that takes u out right by the falls (u can see it in the pics).....its called the maid of the mist. Let me tell, its not just mist, its more like terential rain: when u are on there u get ... read more

Hello all Well, we have been in Canada for 2 days now... (thats counting the 1 day of plane travel) and its very lovely here in O Canada. The people are a lot friendly than the americans and the country is very NZ looking so reminds me of home alot. Cept there are cute little chipmunks and racoons and squirrels!! (which i am on a hunt to locate and make friends with :) and the 12 lane highways). Since we rushed our last email, i will now finish what we started about Hawaii. We decided on the last day to snorkel all day at Hanauma Bay in the blistering heat. We brought some flash 'lolly' smell sun screen which didnt really work to well as we are both now quite sun burnt. That didnt make a ... read more

Wednesday, and time to turn our attention on sights along the Niagara River as it races down the Great Gorge away from the falls. The Adventure Pass includes a reduced fare on the People Mover, an elongated bus that travels from Table Rock up along the Niagara River Parkway to Queenston Heights. We found it a great way to get around and not have to worry about parking. We picked it up, again at the Rainbow Bridge kiosk, and rode to the White Water Walk. Here, you also ride an elevator down to the river level. A path along the river allows the visitor to view the impressive Class 6 Whirlpool Rapids at several points. Form the photos, you might have the impression the Whirlpool Rapids is in the wilderness. But, it's very close to town. ... read more

The first order of business today was to buy our "Adventure Pass" from the Niagara Parks kiosk. The pass is worthwhile: it includes discounts on all of the falls attractions as well as the parks and historic sites operated by Niagara Parks. They will also make reservations for you on popular attractions. We scheduled our Maid of the Mist ride right away. The entrance to Maid of the Mist is near Rainbow Bridge, so we were right there and walked on down to the river. The wait was not long and we were shortly donning our blue plastic ponchos and boarding the boat. From there it was straight into the mist! The boats take you right up to face the Horseshoe Falls. You get wet. The ride is definitely not to be missed! (Boats leave from ... read more

Niagara Falls-the images it conjures! Maybe not as tall as IguaƧu. Maybe not as wide as Victoria. Nevertheless, Niagara is one of the world's great waterfalls and is a must-see. This was our second family trip to Niagara Falls. The first had been in 2000, when we stayed mainly on the New York side and made a few forays into Canada. The Canadian side appeared to have a greater variety to offer and more to do. So, this time, we planned to use Niagara Falls, Ontario, as our base. We drove up from Northern Virginia in two days, spending a night on the road in Binghamton, NY. We arrived in the Niagara area on Monday afternoon, headed directly across Rainbow Bridge, and quickly cleared Canadian customs. Our hotel, Courtyard by Marriott, was convenient to the Falls ... read more

Niagara Falls Buffulo New York, was a fairly tired looking, run down looking town. A kilometer away in Canada its like Las Vegas, nice buildings and streets, lookouts, casinos, the people looked happier.... generally much much nicer.... maybe the United States felt that since Niagara had all the excitement stitched up they felt it would be a waste of money to try and compete?? So they basically let their side of the Falls ......... fall down! The tour company had learnt from previous experience that it is not a good idea to take the bus over the bridge to Canada. On a previous trip it took 3 hours to cross the bridge and the entire bus was inspected, making them 4 hours or more out of sinc with the itinirary, so now if you wanted to ... read more

Day 2! We spent the morning and afternoon looking at the falls and enjoying the warm sunny day. We took a tour of the tunnels behind the falls and got a close up of Horseshoe Falls. Even though they gave us raincoats we still came out soaking wet. Then we hitched a ride on the maid of the Mist and got even closer. At one point it felt like a torrent of rain was coming down on us. It was definitely an experience to be had! Afterwards we went to the train station where we found out that trains are always late. Our next destination was Toronto. We panicked as soon as we saw our two-person hostel room. We went from a $250 a night room to a $60 for 4 days nightmare! We really panicked ... read more

Day 1 of my Northeastern North American Trip! I've got plenty planned and hope to see as much as possible. My main hopes for this trip are to kick start my love of travel into action since all I ever do is talk about travelling. Hopefully this is a good start. My original plan would of involved 30 days of travel that would have ended up in bankruptcy so I narrowed it down to just one small corner of the United States and Canada. It will be great to meet Horty though! He's from Canada, Miramichi to be exact. Tony is joining me for part of the trip and then I am on my own. I've never travelled alone but am looking forward to it. Anyways, I hope you enjoy my travels. First Stop: Niagara Falls! ... read more
