The title of this blog is taken from a book I owned as a kid. The heroine of the story wrote letters to her best friend and always ended them with "Yours Till Niagara Falls," and so I could think of no better title for this entry. This was not my first trip to Niagara Falls, nor do I suspect it will be my last. My parents brought me here when I was little (I think I was 8 or 9) and I have definite memories of the trip and particularly the Falls, but needless to say it has changed a bit over the last 25+ years. Not so much the Falls themselves as I don't imagine they've really changed all that much in the last few thousand years, but the surrounding area definitely has. ... read more

Welcome to the first edition of The Maple-moon Chronicles! It seems that our arrival in Canada started some sort of 'Day After Tomorrow' style weather anomalies. The first day was baking hot but then the next day - the day we were having our tea in the CN Tower - was the day that the weather took a turn for the worst and there was mizzly fog that obscured the whole tower, and the view! Not only that, but Torontonians have been suffering with a whole load of mishaps that have been reported ad infinitum on the local news including: 1. CN Tower hit 3 times by lightning in one night (it's usually hit 75 times a year) 2. An 'outbreak' of mumps (meaning 3 cases) which had CSI style reporting outside the restaurant it was ... read more

Our main reason for stopping over in Toronto was to take a trip to see the Niagara Falls and we weren't disappointed. Picked up at our B&B by a 14 passenger van about 9.00 am we made an hour and a half trip to a winery then stopped at the old historic town of Niagara On The Lake. The van took an anti-clockwise route around the western end of Lake Ontario on a fairly busy highway to get to NOL. After a half hour wander around Niagara On The Lake we drove on the the Falls. Very impressive! Took the "Behind the Falls" walk and were quite close to the edge of the falling torrent as the river plunged down 114 metres - loud and wet. Pat & I had some lunch - it was ... read more

On Saturday, March 31, I went with friends to Niagara Falls and Buffalo. THe trip across the border was necessary to put my mind at ease. Did not want to be surprised by some passed sins popping up from the computer on April 30 when attempting to board the plane for Alaska. In Niagara Falls we walked to the giant ferris wheel and for a dollar a minute spent 10min in the heated gondola. This is not half as big as the Needle in London. Here in Niagara the wheel has 42 gondolas which seat 8 people comfortably. It cost $10 per person...children have a bit lower entrance fee. There is so much garbage and so many huge hotels that the feeling of the whole plachas changed. The main attraction used to be the Falls. ... read more

Tomorrow marks two weeks on the road and we've taken a huge chunk out of the motherland. The first leg was one of the toughest, but we made short work of the Ol' Alaska Highway to land at Aunty Gwen's. We had a good visit in High Prairie with Gwen and all the critter cousins. Well rested and even more well fed, we headed south for New Year's in Big B-town. Dy's family humbly took us in and showed us a great time on the ranch, including an aerial tour, rig ride and, oh yes, sledding on Bassanos world reknowned tobogganing hill. We regretfully departed Alberta in 2007 for a few days with the Armstrong rellies - a pleasure, as always. Despite the busy schedules, a grand visit was squeezed in, with much wizarding at #9 ... read more

We arrived at the Hilton in Niagara after a pleasant bus journey. Was sitting beside some Jamaican woman and we talked about living in Canada, Scotland, the weather (as usual) and most importantly the pros and cons of gambling at casino. I'm pretty sure I convinced her it was all good. Anyway, the catch with us getting this room at the Hilton was that Richard had to pretend he had just started working at the hotel his sister is based at and some other complicated story about being on vacation. Obviously this didn't fill Baz and I with confidence as Richard went to check in, but surprisingly he did manage to pull it off. Although he did manage to lose one of the room keys only 5 mins. after checking in. A taxi driver was telling ... read more

As I woke up, a lot of other people in the dorm were up as well, but they were looking very worse for wear. Did everyone else go out last night? Damnit, why didn’t they tell me where they were going? Sure I don’t have a problem drinking by myself in a pub but I have met Aussies in dribs and drabs all along this trip! I went downstairs to have a light breakfast and saw a bus piling on passengers for a day trip to Niagara Falls. I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to do today yet. All I wanted was another day in Toronto and even another night. Tomorrow I would set course for San Francisco on my way back home, so I had to make sure that I would make it ... read more
