We've gone from Old Scotland to New Scotland in our last few blogs. This trip was to Nova Scotia or New Scotland, on the East Coast of Canada. The last time we both came here was nearly 2 years ago before we left on our trip. This time no trip sadly but good to visit. Before we flew to Halifax we made a quick pit-stop in Toronto. Our good friend Sudha's (whose family we visited in India last year) brother was marrying his lovely fiance Sherrie. We were lucky enough to be invited. We arrived in Toronto early Saturday morning after getting a lovely Harmony red-eye flight from Vancouver. So, after no sleep and a drive around Toronto on the look-out for wedding presents we arrived at our friend Ben and Jen's house late morning. We ... read more

Travel MapA quick stop in Halifax before taking off for Cape Breton Island. We stayed at the Westin on a priceline bid that was cheaper than the best 3.5* hotel rate we could find. The hotel was nice and the beds were "heavenly". Dave had great luck getting suggestions from the concierge, who pointed us to the Comfy Corner Cafe for a great breakfast, and The Sweet Basil Bistro for a wonderful dinner. He also pointed us to a great jazz bar for after dinner, but I forget the name.... read more

We love Halifax! We've been here three days and have been enjoying it very much. We're staying at the Marriott on the waterfront which is very convenient because there is a ped-way which connects you to lots of other buildings. It's great because if the weather is bad it provides an alternative route to get about. We made sure to stop and shop in the Historic Properties Market which is just next door to our hotel. There are lots of shops and lots of food vendors with all sorts of treats. We visited the Citadel again (we were here on our last trip); we love to hear the pipers and to hear the daily cannon fire at 12 noon. We found a great little restaurant called the Apple Barrel and we took Alexander Keith's Brewery Tour ... read more

OK....So this is my second blog entry, and with 10 days to go I am starting to feel the excitement and even fear of my up coming adventure. Since my last blog I have gotten a lot done. I have most of all the things I am taking with me into one spot, I got money adding up, and I even have some Australian Currency already in my pocket. The money there is very interesting, for starters its plastic coated, making it rip and weather resistent. It is also all in different sizes, and in different colours like ours (see picture). So here is the plan thus far.... I arrive in Sydney at about 6:10am Local time (which is about 5:10pm the day before in Halifax) then head to the hostel I am staying at. The hostel ... read more

Im going to cheat a little here and give you a very quick run down of my maritime adventures... After NY I headed back to Toronto for a night and then it was a quick flight into Halifax. A pretty little harbour city with a lot of hills. I guess it was a bit of a shock to the system after the sights and sounds of TO and NY but it was a nice change of pace none the less. I made a spur of the moment decision to do a tour of Nova Scotia, Capre Breton Island and Prince Edward Island and it was one of the best things I decided to do out there! The Salty Bear tour was brilliant - such a great way to see the area without having to hire a ... read more

We were so excited to be on our way, then…… our Fan-tas-tic (or not so) fan broke. Still it was not all bad because as luck would have it we were driving right past the factory on our way to the Border. The web site said “call in any time, we will be pleased to repair / replace your fan for free”. After a month, what difference did another day make? So we delayed our plans for a day to call in… Well they certainly lived up to their claims We felt like royalty. After a greeting and a quick run down on the guys political views (i.e. he apologised for Bush, very refreshing following Elkhart) a quick Tourist Information Service chat and free coffees, we were taken on a tour of the factory. At each ... read more

This is my first entry folks, so bear with me. It's Sunday morning, and I'm at my laptop setting to words one hell of an experience in North Preston, Nova Scotia. North Preston is an "all Black" community in Nova Scotia; an old friend from Brooklyn got married to a born-and-bred Nova Scotian yesterday. And what a wedding it was! Gerald told me his wedding was in Nova Scotia, and that he was marrying a native - and I asked him, "There are Black people in Nova Scotia?" And congratulated him on the nuptials too. Turns out there are, and they are the descendants of African slaves escaped from the States. They stayed up North, and built something. Now, 70% of Blacks in Canada are of Caribbean decent, so there are cultural differences from these folks, ... read more

Day 93: Monday 7th. August 2006: Up early for the early flight to Halifax - no brekky today - queue for the flight OK but beeped when I went through the scan, but this time both of us had to have the full body check and bag check. Before I go through a scan I remove all my jewellery, coat, shoes etc. as I always get body searched due to my knee replacement pieces setting off the alarms. Also my backpack and camera bag get scanned and wiped for explosives - fun isn’t it!!! Vera not used to this invasion. Never mind - it was onto this great little jet with the most comfortable seats one could hope for with a good flight to Halifax. We caught the airporter bus to town going via many suburbs ... read more
