Halifax it the world’s second largest natural harbor and the world’s deepest natural harbor, is also the capital of Nova Scotia. The French learned about this area from the Mi”Kmaq (mic -mak) Native Indians, but it was the Brits who saw the site’s potential and settled the area in 1749. We drove into Halifax, parked the Bothan at the pier and took off on our bikes. It being Sunday AM it was relatively easy to get the layout of the land. Unfortunately most shops are closed on Sunday. The Halifax Citadel National Historic Site was on our list of places to visit. Little did we know today was the culminating festivities of a week long celebration of 100 years since the British left Canada and the Dominion of Canada took over. The first event was ... read more

I am hoping to start work within a few days after arriving. So I can start making money...Did I mention that Min. Wage there is around 13.00? I plan on living in Sydney for a bit (but who knows). So much to do and so little time. I am determined to come away from Halifax with not only some understanding of the town, but also an understanding of how I felt about it. Is it a place I would like to visit again? What does it do for me inside? Are the people here really different from other cities in Canada? Does it excite me photgraphically? Whew, a pretty tall order for two and half days, but you need to start somewhere. There were funny sensations going on inside as I walked the sometimes steep streets. With the moist air, fog, old buildings, university right downtown, old apartment buildings fairly well maintained, lots of students wandering around, and a collection of strange characters, it created a feeling like the South Kensington area of London did ... read more

My Grand Tour of Canada has begun! Or my Cross-Canadian Caper has begun, I don't know what to call it yet. My goal is t go from Halifax to Victoria all across the vast expanse of Canada. Part of the way my best Canadian Friend Ever Horty will join me. The rest of the way I will be by myself. I start off in Halifax after flying the night before. I've also received a huge monstrosity of a car to drive since it was the only one available. Poor me. Wish me luck! Started the morning off at Peggy's Cove and it is already one of my favorite places on Earth! The weather started off very murky and Morrissey-ish but then got all bright and sunny by noon. Its a great place to visit and the ... read more

Being retired is hard work! So, for the next week, we will be kicking back and relaxing at Woodhaven Campground in Hammond Plains, Nova Scotia (just a few miles from Kristy and David's). This is the campground that belongs to Mona's neice and where the motor home was stored. Copper is still having a great time...she's only chewed herself loose from her rope twice in the last two days! It's off to Canadian Tire for some chain! We'll let you know when we have decided where to go next. It is wonderful to hear from all of you! Love Nancy and Doug... read more

After a short tutorial from Nick and Mona, we are heading off on a nine day "trial trip" down to southern point of Nova Scotia. Copper is getting used to the driving and loves running off the leash and chasing the seagulls along the ocean. We are having a wonderful time and enjoying every minute of retirement. On the 20th we arrived in Yarmouth. We will keep you posted. Hope everyone is well, Doug and Nancy and Copper too! ... read more

January 10: I hope this adage is true and all will now fall in place. To start, we arrived at Halifax Airport a day early!!! I had given myself a day's leeway in case of snowstorm on our drive back east from Christmas in Quebec and had lost track of day and date. Better early than late. We left Shelbourne, NS as scheduled (so I thought). Tuck ignored us when we left. I guess he thought we would be back shortly as we did not put his food bin in the back of the truck and he had had enough travelling in the last few days (1500 km). Belinda says he has not tacken his eyes off the baggage we left behind since we left. In any case, we were up at 4 am and showed ... read more

Time has really flown by! I am such a mix of emotions. Most of all very excited. So much that I am having trouble sleeping most nights! Along with the excitement there is a bit of anxiousness and nervousness. Lately I have been around home packing and running out for last minute things I have fogotten. There has also been lots of socializing with friends one last time before I leave. I got an email from Brookes this morning and she has arrived in Bangkok! Wow! This really hit home the fact that I leave on Monday morning! I feel like I just can't wait til I am there with her! Before then Geoff and I have a nice weekend set aside. We are going to the Mooseheads game tonite and out to a nice dinner ... read more
