The Great White North. Not yet, but I don't think the white stuff is far away. The beautiful mix of autumn greens, browns and reds will soon give way to wall to wall white. However, nothing is more annoying, when you arrive in a new town or city, to get to your hostel and find it infested with long-termers (long term "guests") or creepy old men who look like they are hiding from the cops because they have left stashes of kiddie porn here and there. Nevertheless the place I am in right now in Halifax isn't that bad, but I was somewhat annoyed to come across yet another place that seemed like a drop in centre. But to be fair, the place hasn't been open long and the young bloke who runs it is probably ... read more

All aboard L'Ocean! Cross CAnada train trip starts Quebec City first. I stayed at the hostel right up until check out since I didn't have any last minute errands to run. Well except to buy some snacks for the train but that could wait since the grocery store is right beside the train station. So I checked out. Got my $5 key deposit back and was on my way to the train station to check in one of my bags. Then I headed over to the Atlantic Superstore for some snax...fruit, crackers, buns, a bit of chocolate, a magazine and $20 later (!) I was walking back to the train station. I guess I over did it with the fruit. :) 10:57 Checked out of the hostel and I'm out the door 11:04 I have my ... read more

Gusty winds and rain My clothes become a wet sponge Time to leave St. John's! I heard the rain starting to pound against my window as I was falling asleep last night. I awoke to hear it pelting against the window. I had a look outside and boy did it look gross out there. You could see the rains being blown every which way. There were huge rivers and lakes and pools of water forming everywhere. There weren't too many people out there braving the elements that's for sure and the few I did see were all decked out in full on raincoats, pants and hats. Hmm, I've gotta step outside and get myself across the street. This should prove to be interesting! After about an hour of hoping the rains would let up (they didn't) ... read more

Wet and soggy day Been like this for four days now. Where has the sun gone? Well, this is my last full day here in Halifax so I am going to make the most of it. I'll walk along Spring Garden Road and all the shops and eateries. Perhaps make my way to either the art gallery or the Maritime Museum and hopefully by then I won't be too much of a drowned rat. Speaking of rat, I saw a dead one in the middle of the sidewalk the other day. All stiff and laying on it's back. It was disgusting! Anyhoo, as I was saying, I'll walk around Halifax today and explore the City some more in all this wet and rainy glory... BTW, I have a temporary "internet only" library card here in Halifax ... read more

Happy Thanksgiving! Lounging, chatting and eating! Not much to do day... Well, being miserable outside is not very welcoming, so I pretty much stayed inside most of the day other than the quick trip over to the Tim Horton's for a bite to eat and then it was pretty much back to the TV/Common room at the hostel. While watching lots of TV, I also worked on my cross stitch. Yup, I think this is the only time I've really pulled it out and worked on it. Well, I think I may have briefly pulled it out once when I was back in Vietnam but that was months ago! It started off as a movie sort of day. We started watching "Taking Care of Business" with James Belushi and Charles Grodin. Then it was "Trading Places" ... read more

Pissing down with rain Lazy day of sleeping in Arrival of fall. It was a pretty subdued day today. I found out that Maria's (from NYC) dad passed away yesterday. Really puts a damper on the day... I basically slept in today and had little motivation to get up this morning because I could hear the rains pelting down on the window and didn't feel much like walking about in the rain and getting all soaked. So I just spent some time in the TV room/common room doing some reading, writing, chatting and zoning out in front of the TV. The only time I ventured out was to get some foods to eat. Oh what an exciting day. HAHA ... read more

Salty Bear cancelled What a huge disappointment Four days. Halifax! Well the remaining two day tour with Salty Bear was officially cancelled this morning. Kev, our van, was in desperate need of repairs and apparently there were no vans available for rent. So that means I'll be missing out on Peggy's Cove, Annapolis Royal and the Bay of Fundy. To make myself feel a little bit better I saw on the weather channel that there is a big meteorological warning out for the area...lots and lots of rains are on the way! So after hearing the bad weather forecast it didn’t seem so bad after all. It's not that great travelling about and trying to sightsee when it is pouring rain out. Instead I made the most of my day and had a bite to eat ... read more

Two hours of biking Tour round the island and saw Anne of Green Gables! We started out about an hour behind schedule since there were quite a few people with hangovers. Or rather they were still feeling a bit drunk considering they had just stopped drinking about four hours earlier. lol We ended up having a sit down breakfast at a nice little place in Cavendish instead of grabbing a bit to eat at the Tim Horton's. It’s always nice to be able to have a leisurely breakfast instead of rushing around all the time. From breakfast we headed across the street to the local Petro Canada station where our rental bikes were waiting for us. Can you believe that we were only charged $6 for 2 hours! Awesome! We rode along the Cavendish Trail which ... read more

Touristy walk 'bout town Quiet day in Halifax Train tickets in hand! I ended up staying up til about midnight last night just chatting with my English roomies...definitely not with the Chinese woman in our room! I said hello to her when she came into the room and she totally ignored me! Talk about icy! LOL I'm just about caught up on all of my missing sleep and rolled outta bed close to 10AM this morning. I saw the sun shining and felt a tad guilty for being inside so I forced myself to not be so lazy. :) Once I got up it was no problem. Basically I walked around downtown for a bit. Checked out the Citadel and some of the views from there and walked along the water. Three huge cruise ships are ... read more

Back in Canada Tim Horton's, Ice Hockey, Toques Canadiana. Since my sleep schedule has been put off the last two days in the sense that I’ve gone to bed after 3AM, I thought I might as well stay up instead of going to sleep before my flight to Halifax. Departure time for Toronto is at 6:20, so that meant having to leave for the airport just before 4AM. Yowzers! Thank goodness I was chatting with Lainie til about 3AM...that really helped me to stay awake. It's a great thing that Anita will be able to bring some of my stuff back to Vancouver when she visits next. Therefore I have been able to keep my checked in backpack less than 30lbs (I think that's about 13.5kg.) which is great! If only I could have travelled that ... read more
