Halifax, the capital of Nova Scotia and the largest city in the Maritimes, has an area population of around 400,000. The city has a working seaport, a great pedestrian waterfront, lots of restaurants and pubs, and the historic Citadel overlooking the harbor. The Busker Festival was in full swing on the waterfront. Street performers, including jugglers, acrobats, break dancers, puppeteers and the like, provided good family fun free to the public, with only a donation requested. One day we followed the Lighthouse Trail, which took us to Peggy’s Cove, home of the smallest post office we’d ever seen. The post office was inside a lighthouse and was only large enough for the clerk and one or two customers. We stopped at a memorial to Swiss Air Flight 111, which commemorated 229 lives lost and the Nova ... read more

Dim Sum this morning with Aunty Chrissy, Uncle Daniel, Aurie and Robyn. I even tried the tripe, maybe not my favorite. A little down time, and some more watching the tall ships and then it was time to take Aurie to the airport. We talked a lot about music recording and processing and exchanged information. It would be great to keep up with her and Ling and Hans. They’re all so cool and laid back and kind. Then we went to an Acadian museum a little ways from the airport.... read more

Hans and Ling left today and the rest of us slept in late. We grabbed a quick lunch at a Vietnamese restaurant with Robyn’s Aunt and Uncle and Aurie. Then Robyn and I went down to the pier to see the Tall Ships at the Festival. We were actually able to go on The Spirit of Baltimore II. This tall ship was majestic and romantic. The shutter on my camera just would not stop. The water in the harbor is blue as can be and the sun shown down on us as we walked the wooden deck. Later - a bit of shopping as we walk around beautiful downtown Halifax. Robyn fell in love with the candy store here and I found an artistic little gift for my Dad for his birthday. In the evening ... read more

Early morning today. Got on the road around 3:30AM to drop the car by the airport. Robyn and I are on our way up to Nova Scotia to visit her Aunt Chrissy and research the Mic’mak/Acadia film. A long layover in DC became an even longer one when the plane to Halifax was delayed. We arrived around 10:30PM, got some Japanese food and went to bed. Nova Scotia is exciting. Halifax reminds me of Seattle.... read more

After I left Ontario I flew to Halifax. The Halifax area was overcast and so we could not see the ground until shortly before landing. It was very exciting when the plane finally broke through the clouds and Nova Scotia was right below. The first thing that struck me was just how many lakes there are near Halifax - the entire landscape was dotted with lakes and rivers. They had a late spring in the Maritimes so the trees were mostly still barren and I knew I was a long way away from warm, sunny Vancouver which had bloomed in to spring months before. I made my way in to the city of Halifax where I met up with Mike, Sean and Garreth, three friends from UBC. I spent a few nights with them and ... read more

You are going to have to bear with me on this one - this computer has been hijacked and replaced its apostrophe with an è!! We waved au revoir to Niagara and headed off to Halifax with the words of a taxi driver ringing in our ears: there is not much crime here because last year a man snatched a purse and got sent to Federal Prison for 12 years. Not so in Halifax, we spotted the remnants of a smashed car window which indicated to me that we were indeed in Banditville. If only Mr. Taxi Driver knew; he would be unable to sleep at night! As befits our romantic status as Newleyweds, the hostel went all out to get us a private room. Shame that it had bunk beds in it though! Not to ... read more

Day 1The big day :) When I woke up this morning I felt strangely apathetic about the whole idea of the trip, but as the hours ticked by the butterflies in my stomach grew decidedly more agitated. My family drove me out to the airport and sat with me for a few minutes before I made my way through security without hassle, and went upstairs to wait to board the flight. Now, I don't mind flying, but I was slightly annoyed at the fact that my nice direct flight had been cancelled and I had to fly all the way to Ottawa in order to catch a flight to London. Lame. In any case, the flight to Ottawa was uneventful, but I had a row to myself and watched Music & Lyrics on the seatback video ... read more

We pushed thru hard from Toronto into the east. We had a quick visit with Zac and Lindsay in Ottawa for a game of scrabble and some lunch. Can't help but to mention that dub. came our on top (better luck next time, guys). We drove the night thru Quebec and New Brunswick to make Nova Scotia around breakfast on the 11th. We headed almost straight to the Nish where we spent the duration at Ev's: 77 Pleasant. Special thanks to the crew for putting up with us, and to Barrie for the extended use of her bed. We ran with the team, made our rounds and frequented the night scene. A shout out to Fran and Coleen's for the burgers and pie (the pie was appreciated again for breakfast!). Rob's thinking he might apply now ... read more

As the semester wound down and people began to relax after the stress of exams it soon became clear as reality set in that most of us would be saying goodbye to each other. So for a few days we all did our best to ignore the inevitable and have fun (read drinking) before having to say our farewells. I was definitely lucky to have had such an amazing group of friends over the first semester here at Mcgill University in Montreal. It was with a certain amount of relief then that Jacqui and I were on our own and getting away from Montreal. We were off to Nova Scotia to visit one of her friends, Halina. We left on the train at about 18:30 on what would prove to be a pretty long journey. The ... read more
