Geo: 48.4644, -123.38It is our last day on the Ibis...this morning we began with a nice breakfast of granola topped with the last of the blackberry goo. Delicious! We have a long way to go to get back to Oak Harbor in Victoria, and we get busy. The dinghy is brought around to the front of the boat, reloaded and tied down, the anchor is hauled in and off we go. John is at the helm and the sun comes out! The sea is calm....there is a nice breeze and it isn't raining! The sails are up but we are still motoring. After a long while of cruising along, Jeff relieves John. They are following the "rum" line. At least that's what I thought they've been saying all week; rum line. Of course, every time they say ... read more

As already said, many animals live in the farm. The horses are nice to us and enjoy some cuddles and brushing from time to time. The cats wonder around our tent and even sleep in front of it, always begging for attention and tasty bites of our food. The dogs have very different personalities: Oliver, the oldest and biggest dog, and also the only male, is not interested in cuddles and uses to lay down without making any noise. Rosy, a young Puddle girl, always enjoys scratching on her back and barks to any new visitor on the farm. And last but not least the two puppies: Blaze and Tia Maria. Blaze is like a storm, jumping, flying from place to place and calling the attention of everyone. Tia Maria, is less impulsive but equal so ... read more

Geo: 48.4644, -123.38Oh, Canada... (August 28, 2015) Here we are in Canada. Funny how a "short" trip like this takes the whole day and is so tiring. We dinked around the house "waiting" for our agreed upon depature time. A nice relaxing morning. When we arrived at the US Airport parking lot and turned off the car, Jeff looked at me and said, "Oh Crap!" Actually he didn't say "crap", but this is a family blog so we'll say "crap." "I forgot my hat!"Well, this is a disaster. Jeff bought this wonderful hat specifically for this trip - it was a Tilley and designed not to blow off, it was expensive, and it was still in our hall closet. Crap is right. Our flight to Seattle was uneventful, though it was a small plane, two seats per ... read more

We step out of the car, say goodbye to Kevin and start looking around in the place where we are spending the next three weeks. Wendy, our WOOFing host, is not yet back. She texted us that she has visitors and that they went for a ride. We walk around the place and meet all the other inhabitants of the farm. Apart from the horses there are some chicken, two goats, 4 dogs and three cats. Tango, one of the cats, friendly welcome us, and makes herself comfortable on Diego’s backpack. She stays there for the next 15 min! Finally Wendy arrives and we also meet her joyful wife Silvy, as well as her daughter and her son in law, who spend their holidays in the farm. The first days are quite cold comparing with the ... read more

Kevin lives with his family in a house that he is rebuilding by himself. It is located more or less directly at the beautiful Shawnigan Lake. We are not the only visitors staying with the Kerstens. Nathalie and Nathalie from Germany and Switzerland are also there. They are like us travelling through Canada and met Kevin through the Website Work Away. Kevin makes us feel welcome right away. Natalie from Germany prepares Apple Crumble for dessert and the other Natalie starts preparing dinner. We just join. After some time Karina, Kevins wife, comes home from work and we have great dinner. After dinner we set up our tent next to the pool. The next morning we offer to help Kevin mixing concrete for his pizza oven and the base for a new shower in the basement. ... read more

We touch land in Swartz Bay, and jump into the bus taking us to Victoria downtown. Just stepping out of the bus and we already like it. Victoria has a strong British atmosphere with it's own special taste. Finally the decision is made to spend our money on booking two nights in an expensive Hostel and some rental bikes. We soon discover that everything in Victoria is expensive :S All in all, the good city-feelings we couldn’t find in Vancouver are here around every corner. After two days of exploring the area and finding deer in the city parks, we try to get north to our WWOOFing place in Cobble Hill. It is a day early and we want to make a stop in Mill Bay. As we are on a low budget we want to ... read more

One part of planning a perfect trip that often doesn’t get enough attention is the arrival. It’s likely that most travelers are so anxious to start their vacation that they probably pick the quickest way to a destination. The fun will be had once you get there, not on the journey. Arrival by air is often a necessity in the fast paced world of exotic destinations and short stays. Perhaps some choose transportation based on cost. Lots of people going? Can they all fit in the minivan? Some destinations lend themselves to a certain type of arrival. While rarely mentioned, I think the popularity of Venice, Italy is due in part to the necessity of taking a boat up the Grand Canal at arrival. Gliding past opulent Palazzo on both sides of the canal you naturally ... read more

Our adventure started on Saturday morning with the boys dropping us at Sydney airport. They didn't hang around long and I discovered James Anthony's Facebook post the next day saying "getting rid of the parentals for 6 weeks.. Yay". Thanks for that buddy! If anyone hears about a crazy Facebook party that got crashed by randoms and with police attending, somewhere in Roselands, PLEASE DO NOT tell me until it's time for us to go home. The Fiji Airways flights were full to the brim but they were really smooth and the attendants were lovely and the food was really quite good (but then again I pretty much eat anything as you can tell by my waistline). There was a two and half hour layover in Fiji. This is where we had our first "drama". After ... read more

It's 9.31 on the 18th July. I haven't got round to writing a blog for a few days now as we've been moving on from Victoria and on to Seattle. We're settled in now here in Seattle however, so I will write about Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of our last week. Monday was a fairly uneventful day, with Donna going back to work and Bob having to go in for a meeting. So in the morning I got up early-ish, wrote my last blog and had some breakfast, by which time everyone else was up. Bob came back at about 12 and was now actually on holiday. Around that time Rosie and I decided to head out to the plaza, grab some frozen yoghurt and throw some ball, while Kate sunbathed and Matt watched a film ... read more

It's 9.08 on 13th July. So now we're drawing towards the end of out time in Victoria, and we will be leaving for the U.S. in just a few days. In this blog I will write about our weekend here with Donna and Bob, and it'll be the the penultimate blog written in Canada. Friday I got up at a reasonable time - 8am maybe, and went for a run. As usual, the last of us were up by 10.30, and we were ready to discuss plans for the day. As we were going to watch a lacrosse game that evening, the girls were happy to spend the day sunbathing while Matt seemed content doing something on his phone. So, I decided to walk the hour or so down to the new mall that had just ... read more
