It's hard to believe we've only been away for one week! We are staying in Victoria on Vancouver Island with my cousin Lorna and she has planned a very full itinerary for us! Victoria is a beautiful city with a very attractive, lively inner harbour area where everything seems to happen. We experienced our 2nd whale watching trip on Thursday with the 'Prince of Whales' and saw two pods of killer whales - amazing! When we returned we were taken on a complimentary tour of the harbour and gorge in a dinky little ferry by Lorna's friend, Christopher, who made it very informative and entertaining for us. This weekend has been particularly busy as it was a public holiday marking the end of the summer break. The children were due to go back to school today ... read more

Hello my fellow friends, family, and everyone else, It is the count down! 3 days left until I leave life as I know it and experience the real world. For the past 18 years of my life, my average day consisted of waking up, getting ready for school, running to the bus praying that it has not left yet, getting to school, coming home, sleeping, and repeating. Day in, day out, this was my life, until last year. Graduation rolled around the corner and BAM! I was driving, I was a part time student, I had a job, I was rowing, finding a social life, attempting to manage the life of a teenager with roller-coaster emotions, one minute happy, the next... moving on. The year flew by and suddenly it was walk up day. I felt ... read more

Tofino (via Port Alberni) & Ucluelet We leave the campground early & head for Thrifty Food, then French Creek to fill our cool-box for the next few days. On the way out we stop at the Courtyard Café in QB for coffee & have a berry pie & muffin for breakfast. We also get chatting to a Canadian couple, David & Shirley from Edmonton who have moved to the area as he has retired. He seemed to be fairly typical of a number of Canadians we have got into conversation with; describing the UK as having a lot of black people & regretting the fact that the immigrant communities were now running a lot of the local businesses and had bought up the fruit farms in BC. What he didn’t acknowledge was that the Canadians sold ... read more

Vancouver We are up very early for the 265 mile journey to Vancouver from Penticton, and in the rush forget to take a picture of some of the vineyards in the area. They are small – not quite French or Italian standard. We pass forests, lakes, parched hills and see hardly any settlements for miles. It’s a boring drive. We take Highway 97C towards Merritt then the 5S to Vancouver City. We are again booked into the YWCA for one night & have a car parking spot for $13 extra – worth it & convenient. After catching up with a lot of emails etc, we shower and go to Gastown for the evening and end up at Rogue for dinner at the Waterfront – we have a great meal – grilled wild salmon sandwich & their ... read more

Fire and destruction. There is something unsettling about flying over a mountain that is on fire. especially when you know that fire is one of about 160 in the greater area. While in Toronto Gemma and I had caught snippets of the weather for all of North America and we saw that British Columbia (BC) was in the grip of a ferocious heatwave. Some areas hitting 43 centigrade. The BC wilderness is typified by pine forests. Pine trees produce a lot of resin, it's that which you can smell on nice warm days and what gives them such a distinctive smell. It is also what puts Pine trees at a significant disadvantage during droughts and heatwaves. The resin is highly flammable, and in some trees known to take a spark even when wet. Due to the ... read more

3.7.2014 - Left Whistler 8.45a.m. - one and a half hours into Vancouver with a stop at Shannon Falls enroute - another pretty drive. Our bus driver took us to the Seaport area near the cruise terminal in Vancouver where we caught a seaplane to Vancouver Island, the capital of which is Victoria, in fact the capital of British Columbia, my Canadian geography is not too good, I thought Vancouver was the capital of British Columbia. The seaplane ride took about 35 minutes and we landed in the harbour near the famous Butchart Gardens, there was a Butchart Gardens person to meet and greet and took us up to the restaurant in the gardens for our lunch, such a beautiful place especially if you are a gardener, they change the gardens over and over each year ... read more

An emotional day visiting the site where Marilyn Bell came ashore after swimming the strait from US to Vancouver Island. We sang Stephen Hatfield's Beacon Hill and brought him to tears . We also shared music with his parents. What a special day. See Facebook - Anima Singers for a video of Beacon Hill. ... read more

Ces sommets, ... read more
