So this is my first entry of many. I have been working towards this trip for a long time and have had a life changing experience doing it. It's funny how life works. The people you meet, the things you learn from them and the hundreds of challenges you face daily. After all of this, I feel accomplished, and ready to grab South America by the ROCKS! It all started with my good friend Miguel talking about this trip he was thinking about taking. I didn't think too much about it until I read a book called "The Alchemist" written by Paulo Coelho. For anyone that hasn't read this book and feels like they're at somewhat of a stand-still, it has a simple yet amazing story about a boy searching for his dream. It was enough ... read more

So I got back from travelling about 2 months ago which feels like a year ago. Since I have been back I have been hanging out in fantastic 23-30C degree sunny weather. Probably the longest sunniest summer/fall I have ever been through on Vancouver island. It is fantastic and hanging out, BBQing and drinking with my mates is a brilliant way to spend these sunny times. I landed a sweet job with the federal government. It was serendipity. It basically landed in my lap and I grabbed on to the chance. I was initially going to spend time on the "dole" as the Brits call it, go surfing up at Tofino: But I was a little broke from paying my medical bills after my scuba diving accident in Honduras. So on with the show. The job ... read more

. Today we are starting our long trek south (again), first stop Victoria! We continue to have fabulous weather and this morning was no exception - the sky was blue with hardly a cloud, it warmed up pretty quickly and we didn’t have to wear coats! To give you an idea, the people in the cabin next door left with running shorts on… We are just hoping that by making this comment we aren’t jinxing the rest of the trip! Our journey into Canada with 3 other rigs began with a stop at Mount Saint Helens in Washington, site of the enormous 1980 volcanic eruption. Visiting the site and seeing the extent of the devastation makes one realize the overwhelming forces of nature. The side of the mountain literally blew out, creating blistering winds, enormous mud flows, and tons of volcanic ash that drifted around the world--a very sobering reminder that we are just a speck in the geologic timeline of our planet. From there, we traveled north to Port Angeles, Washington. All four rigs were driven (very carefully) onto the Coho Ferry for a ride across the Strait of Juan De Fuca, into Victoria, provincial capital of British Columbia. We stayed at the only RV park in the city, with a great view across the ... read more

We got into Victoria, BC sometime overnight. It’s a pretty short trip from Vancouver. After breakfast Pam and Mary decided to go on a short excursion to try and catch the orcas migrating. I decided to wander. I settled on exploring Beacon Hill Park, very close to where we docked. After I oohed and aahed over the exterior of the Empress Hotel, I walked on over to the park. It’s actually a very big park with lots of nice features but I didn’t know that until I got home. Anyway, I got what I wanted, some nice pictures and a quiet walk. Then I headed downtown to try and find a place to get my nails done. They were driving me nuts. I got lucky with a one-man operation near Chinatown. While I waited for my ... read more

OK, I'm excited. Science Venture Jeff got me looking a surf school sites in Sydney last night. A bit pricey, but I'm sure it will be worth it. Maybe once I actually know what I'm doing I'll finally try surfing here at home. I've been meaning to for YEARS but it's never actually happened. Of course, that will depend on whether or not Tofino is just a ghost town due to extreme drought by that point... Sorry if you got an e-mail report about this lame post. I just have to make a few posts initially so that travelblog.org knows this is an active blog and that it should not be deleted. I promise the next post to be a real one!... read more

Well, it looks like I'll be using this travel blog. I had tried a different site initially, but I hadn't realized that it was going to make everyone create an account with their site to do anything with it. This one looks good. I'm almost finished taking all my drugs. I've had a total of 5 needle pokes, some of which had combined vaccines, over the past month or so. The past 2 weeks have been particularly fun. I got my last Japanese Encephalitis shot on Wed. Sept. 6th (which apparantly has potentially drastic side-effects, though I seemed fine) then the next day I went to the doctor regarding my infected and incredibly huge, swollen middle finger. I was promptly placed on antibiotics for the next week, which made me feel sick everytime I took a ... read more

“So we are staying at a B&B called ‘If-n-When’” Lins said. “No, ‘Ifanwen’ It’s a Welsh name you muppet!” I replied. Having given up on getting accommodation in Seattle we had booked a B&B in Victoria, the Provincial capital of British Columbia and were waiting for the bus to take us to the ferry. Victoria is on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, an island about the size of the UK just off the coast of BC. It is also the only Canadian city below the 49th parallel, so right across the water from the US. The ferry ride is a 90 minute jaunt through the maze of the Southern Gulf Islands which offers spectacular views of the islands as you pass. Unfortunately Lins had decided that ships aren’t her thing so remained indoors and concentrated ... read more
