I went to university in Victoria, so the city is tied to some very happy memories. That being said, I’ve never been fond of Victoria’s more English then England branding. Most people, however, love it and Victoria attracts tourists by the charter - air conditioned - coach load. I am a museum junky, however, so the Royal BC Museum has drawn me back again and again. There’s the current ‘Treasures from the British Museum’ exhibition that highlights (raids on) ancient cultures throughout the world. A lot of the artifacts are copies, and I’ve been told that it doesn’t hold up against the actual British Museum. Until I can make it that far, it will have to do. But, the real treasure is the kid (of any age) friendly permanent exhibitions. Their displays allow closer inspections and ... read more

Day 45. 12,706Km. Tis a sad sad day. I have to get a grip on the fact that I'm headed home. Now I don't expect any tears since I have more time to get home than the average Joe has for his entire holidays. After I loaded up the bike I noticed a low tire on the trailer. I pumped it up some with Bob's tire pump before saying my good bye's then looked for a tire dealer to get it checked. I could'nt feel anything so for all I knew kids could have just let some air out of it. Bob did say one day he went out and there were a couple people at the end of his driveway saying they were just looking at the trailer. The folks at Big O Tires in ... read more

Since arriving in Seattle 18 months ago, several people have raved to us about Victoria, British Columbia, telling us about the city’s charm and savoir vivre. So, faced with our impending departure from Seattle for good, we decided that now is our chance. Axel did virtually all the planning with a few guiding principles from Laurie: 1.) Good eats is key. 2.) Fun is important. Friday, 10 July 2009 Leaving on Friday morning, we first took Mr. Henry to his hotel, and then headed North to the town of Anacortes where the ferry terminal is located. The two-hour ferry ride to Sidney, BC took us right through the picturesque San Juan Islands. Victoria is the largest city on Vancouver Island, the largest island on the Pacific coastline of North America. Victoria enjoyed a golden age in ... read more

For several years, we had discussed the idea of going to Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. I had visited twice before, once when I was five and the second time when I was eleven during a 6th grade field trip. I had lots of great memories from the second trip, and distinctly remembered having fallen in love with the city and it's beautiful architecture and serene setting next to the harbor. As Victoria was only about a three and a half hour trip from Seattle (one hour drive to Anacortes, a two hour ferry ride from Anacortes to Sidney, and finally a 30 minute drive from Sidney into Victoria) we both agreed it would be a great weekend destination. For some reason, it took nearly three years from the time we first talked about visiting the city ... read more

Our friends Dave and Helen took extremely good care of us in their hometown. Victoria is a very lovely city. It's Parliament Building and the Empress Hotel take pride of place downtown, but its suburbia impresses me even more. The vegetation on the West Coast is noticeably different to the East. In Vic at least, the oaks take precedence over the firs. The variety of arts and crafts and tudor style homes is infinite. We enjoyed the Royal BC gardens, the crazy colours of the Buchart Gardens, some shopping and a bike ride in Darren's case. We all had a good time at Camille's, a restaurant that specialises in local cuisine.... read more

Geo: 48.4644, -123.38Well, we made it over to Vancouver Island. The ferry ride was uneventful. It was cloudy and cool that day. We drove to our condo in Parksville. It was pretty nice, right on the ocean. We drove north that afternoon and looked around. The next day we drove to Tofino on the west side of the island. It was a long drive, but worth it. On Sunday, we drove towards Victoria. We made a stop in Sooke so I could go on a zip line. Well it wasn't just one zip line , but 7 zip lines all the way down this huge hill! The longest was 1000 feet. The rest varied from 200 to 600 feet. Sometimes we were about 175 feet up in the air! It was pretty scary. There were some ... read more

After spending our first night in Victoria in, where else but Walmart, we decided to head down town and take a look around. After having some difficulties finding free parking, we gave up and paid a whole $2 an hour for parking. We walked around downtown for a while going into a whole bunch of bookstores, pawn shops, CD shops and cute little boutique stores. Then, being a Sunday we found some markets (only a tiny strip but better than nothing) and looked at all the crafty stuff (so cultured we are). We had a quick bite to eat and a stall from the markets before continuing our journey into china town. Fun fact: Victoria’s china town is the oldest in Canada. Anywho so we continued on and went into an old school record store where ... read more
