Getting ready to move out of Oak Bay I'm still getting used to the idea of leaving all my stuff in storage and travelling Europe with just a backpack. It should be a blast, but there is sure alot to do. I am off work Monday (my last week at work), so I'm going to spend most of the day sorting out various things around my apartment. I'm writing this first entry on my new Dell Mini 9. It's a cool little gadget, that's for sure, but the keyboard takes some getting used to...... read more

Sunday Nov 30 We were up at 5.20 after a very late night playing Rock Band on the PS2. Why on earth did we stay up so late? Aunt Dorothy drove us to the docks where we boarded the Victoria Clipper for a journey through beautiful Puget Sound to the city of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada. At least we're told Puget Sound is beautiful. The fog was so dense we couldn't see a thing. There were two main things we wanted to do in Victoria, visit the Butchart Gardens and have high tea at the Empress Hotel. We started with the gardens. We had been told many times that we had to see these gardens, mostly by people who had been there in summer when the gardens are filled with flowers. At the end of ... read more

On a sunny Sunday afternoon, November 2, 2008, my friends (Erin, Kellan and Mo) and I decided to go on a road trip for a tour of the Cowichan Bay Farm for a local culinary experience. Cowichan Bay Farm is situated near Cowichan Bay Village, approximately five minutes off the TransCanada Highway and forty-five minutes from Victoria. Kellan drove us to the farm (Thanks, Kellan!) and we had so much fun on the way to the farm (Bonding time~!). The farm sells pasture-raised chicken, duck, beef and lamb. When we arrived at the farm, we expected to see chickens and ducks running around, but there weren’t any. Not even a human being! (But we smelled the “fresh smell” of a farm right the moment we stepped out of Kellan’s car. You can feel that there’s animals ... read more

Here I am in South River again, with most of the staff I will be working with this winter. I had strong reservations this morning, as I sat aboard the train, cruising out of toronto. Its really daunting to re-enter this community, where I last year had a really miserable time. Even as I sat there in the dog yard this evening, about to take part in the feeding thats going to happen every day for the next 4-5 months, surrounded by hundreds of rediculously happy creatures.. I felt unhappy. Not fully content about the path I have chosen. And then there's the folks whom Im going to be working with, some of who I was afraid of last winter, people who I was afraid to be myself around, for fear of judgement. My soul feels ... read more

We visited Café Brio on Monday, November the 3rd, one day before the US elections. But I bet nobody was thinking about the election outcomes. I know I was eager to participate in a real culinary tourism experience. And if a previous session in class can apply across other culinary platforms (we learned that what we thought was chocolate, was not real chocolate all along) I, for one, thought we were in for a real culinary treat. The location we chose is reputed for offering an authentic BC culinary experience. And besides I was hungry, too. Not too hungry to cease to function mentally (or to the point of nausea) but you get the idea. In any event, Kim pulled up in her white two-door and scooped up the rest of the group, Team 5. And ... read more

On November 1, 2008, we decided to explore a culinary farm experience. Yellow Point Cranberry Farm is located in Ladysmith, British Columbia on Yellow Point Road. This family-run farm is primarily a working farm but still offer a culinary experience for their visitors. Yellow Point offers a range of activities to participate in, such as the self-guided and guided tours, ranging from quick to basic to informative. They also host a range of family focused events and community-related fundraisers. The farm also has a store on-site where they sell all of the products they produce including cranberries, cranberry jams, jellies and perserves. It was a cool and damp day when we visited and we didn't think to bring any gumboots to wear even though it was a farm. If you decided to visit, we highly recommend ... read more

Visiting Vancouver Island Brewery When visiting Victoria, located on the southern tip of beautiful Vancouver Island, there are a variety of tourist destinations that attract visitors. Some of these attractions include the Butchart Gardens, The Royal Wax Museum, Miniature World, and BC Legislature Buildings. Victoria is also home to hand-crafted wines, beer, and ciders. Many of these locations offer tours of their facility and the one that we had an opportunity to visit was the Vancouver Island Brewery. The tour at Vancouver Island Brewery lasted approximately a hour and a half and took place on a Saturday afternoon (November 1, 2008 to be exact). Arriving at the brewery, we were part of a large group of 30 people taking part of the tour. A most memorable part of the tour was that we got to sample ... read more
