Aloha My Friends, After being home for a week now. I have started to get the post vacation blues... After arriving back in Vancouver and being greeted with dark, grey cold clouds and rain. I have started to be missing the warm, humid days laying on the beach in Waikiki. However; I couldnt bring that part of my holiday back to Victoria with me but hopefully our summer will eventually arrive.... That being said, I have thought of other ways of bringing Hawaii back home with me to remind me of my holiday. These are ways you can bring your holiday home with you, as I am just using Hawaii as an example since I was just there. In no particular order Host a Luau or a Hawaiian Party for your friends and/or family. Themed parties ... read more

Aloha My Friends, Even though I have not brought back the sunshine from Hawaii with me (sorry), I have brought back something else that is equally as warm which is the Hawaiian way of life, Aloha. The word Aloha is commonly used to greet someone as in saying Hello or Goodbye as an expression of love. However, it also means many more beautiful things. In the Hawaiian language, Aloha symbolizes affection, peace, compassion and mercy towards others. 'Alo' means presence and ' ha' means breath which equates to the "the breath of life". The Aloha way of living allows us to share the love and respect with others in our lives. The spirit of Aloha is about sending and recieving positive energies to others and living life in harmony. When practicing the spirit of Aloha, you ... read more

Its 1987, I am four years old. My mom is six months pregnant with my sister and I am sitting beside a stranger on a plane bound to Hawaii. I am scared because I am not sitting beside my dad or my mom. I look for my dad who happens to be sitting across the aisle and he confirmes to me that everything is alright with his big smile underneath a big bushy moustache. The DC10's engines turn on and we start slowly moving toward the run way as my dad informes me that we are taking off on V1, the point of no return. Then he begins his countdown. I count with him as far as I could go...the aircrafts nose rises and its wheels lift off the tarmack and "we are off", as my dad ... read more

Day 4 Today was a day of firsts for the Wilkins. It was our first time on international waters, our first time on foreign soil, our first time using our passports, our first time going through customs, and our first time on a ferry. We got an early start today by being in the dining room of the hotel by 6:30am – it was hard for the rest of the family to be up and ready by 6:30 – especially since we on vacation. But we had to catch the 8am ferry to Victoria and be there early for passport check and proper documentation. The sun comes up early here, so it was daylight way before then, making traveling that early fairly easy. We check in for the ferry, show our passports, fill out the customs ... read more

We caught the car ferry across to Nanaimo where we stayed for 4 nights in a lovely wooded RV park with a view over the harbour. RV parks are often located in places with some of the best views although they work a little differently to what we are used to at home. In New Zealand when you go to a campground you expect the usual washrooms and laundry but also generally cooking facilities and sinks for dishes. Here, because most people own these huge RVs which are fully self contained, you only get washrooms and laundry at the majority of the sites along with a picnic table and a fire pit on which you can build an open fire. This came as a bit of a surpise to us but we have adapted. The water ... read more

Our next stop on our tour of Vancouver island was a few days in Victoria. Johnny was kind enough to let us stay with him in his sweet appartment which we used as a base to explore the city. We headed straight for downtown on our first day and visited the museum which has lots of First Nation's art but it was sad to see that many culturally significant totem poles had been "bought" by the museum to be displayed to the public rather than left where they were found to be continued to be used by the community. We then headed to a place called Fishermen's wharf which included a community of floating houses and the best fish and chips in town. The resident seals also paid us a visit and posed for the camera. ... read more

Hi everyone, I've never used a blog site before, so hopefully this isn't too complicated. I have three more sleeps in my own bed until I leave for this incredible trip! I'm excited, and anxious (both to arrive in India, and to be away from home for four months), and so many other feelings right now. Only a few days left!... read more

Continuing from last blog: Sat 27 Aug: we ate dinner at Robson Sushi again, as it was so good first time round, "all you can eat" is an excellent way to try out different Japanese food as it's not just sushi on offer and finally Robson Street is only a few minutes stroll from the hotel. Sun 28 Aug: caught a seaplane to Victoria, on Vancouver Island, at 8.00 a.m. - a fabulous 35 minute flight, smooth take-off and landing (I'd imagine due to the water). The plane was small, just a few rows of seats, 2 on one side and 1 on the other. With flying at a lower altitude than an ordinary plane, the views were much clearer; rows and rows of tree tunks in the water (can anyone tell me why? Heaps of ... read more

We made it to Victoria in the early afternoon and checked in to our hotel. They gave us a balcony suite overlooking the harbor! I have been sitting here watching the float planes and ferries come in. It is very relaxing. I have decided that the Canuks must think I am an overly aggressive driver. They do not tailgate, honk their horns, flash their lights or give you any finger signals. Now, of course I do not consider myself an overly aggressive driver, but compared to the Canuks, I am all of the above! Megan and I walked all over Victoria and up over Beacon Hill. We have seen a lot of sights and have enjoyed our time here. We ate at a restaurant overlooking the harbor called Nautical Nellies. They had the best food EVER! ... read more
