As i write this i am feeling extremely low and actually very down, the worst i've actually felt since i began travelling. Im still in Banff in the Rocky Mountains which overall has been a really nice place to stay. However right now things feel really bad, and i don't know what to do about it frankly. People say that you learn a lot about yourself when you go travelling, i consider myself a very self-aware person anyway, but what this does seem to be doing is reawakening my own issues within my own consciousness, things that i probably havn't thought a lot about for a long time, things that i've tried to forget about in more recent times and until now have managed to ignore. It all seemed to start last night when Elaine and ... read more

It's official. I have looked everywhere, there really are no Balti house in Banff. Anything else, and you're laughing, there is Canadian, French-Canadian, American, Thai, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, French, Swiss (!), English, Irish, MacDonalds...but if you mention Indian you get looked at like you're from another planet. I don't think they have even heard a Garlic Chilli Chicken Bahar our here, let alone know where to recommend a good one. The closest I've seen is a jar of Pataks Korma curry paste in the supermarket for an extortionate price..... there are some serious sacrifices that I've had to make to come to this place... The good news though is that it's snowing - yeyyyyy!!! It's big gloupy wet flakes like you get in the uk at the moment though, but I know things will definitely improve ... read more

During our time in Banff the Banff Mountain Film festival was occurring, this gave us an opportunity to go and see some of the movies that were showing there. The most notable one that we saw was a film from Bhutan called "Travellers and Magicians", it was a story of a man who lives in Bhutan who has to make a journey across the country and during this journey he meets other travellers, one of whom is a tibetan monk who tells him a story. The film flits between the story and the reality of their journey and the journey they are taking is like a road to enlightenment and change and the story being told reflects the changes that our hero experiences. The film is based greatly around BUddhist teaching and when i was watching ... read more

Hiking has been a big part of what we have done in the Rockies, but the most memorable hike of all was the walk we took up Sulphur Mountain on a very snowy day. Sulphur Mountain is probably not one of the biggest mountains in Banff, but its meant to take 2 to 5 hours to negotiate the path all the way up (and down) and on a day as snowy as this one it was even harder. We began around 12.20pm and at first were really determined to make it up, but the more we climbed the harder and harder it was, it was strenuous all the way up and we had to keep stopping. When we neared the top, part of the path was over a huge drop, and despite the path not being ... read more

Ah-ha this is my most interesting diary entry so far and one in which i learned something... Ok, recently we decided to go for a hike along the Bow River, a fairly thin but very long river than runs through the national park. While we were doing this we noted that part of the walk was way above the river (about 60 feet), it was more like a path at the top of a cliff than anything else. Part of the path was harder to walk on than another part and when walking on the latter it felt very unsafe as if there was an actual chance that one could fall over the cliff. While walking on this part of the path i lost a bit of footing and though i did not fall, i did ... read more

During the first few days in Banff we hired a car. This was a new thing for me because i have never driven in a foreign country before and never on the right side of the road. The first day i was extremely nervous and drove pretty slowly throughout the day, it was notable however that the other drivers tended to be extremely courteous, very different from the UK. On this day we drove to the nearby town of Canmore which is very similar to Banff, though it is located just outside of the national park. This was fine for a first days driving, i was a litle too nervous to do anymore than this on our first day with a car. The following day however we drove up north (about 60km) to the resort of ... read more

The first significant attraction that we checked out in the Rockies was the Hot Springs located u Sulphur Mountain. This is a spa pool that uses the naturally hot spring water from up the mountain. It is located in a position where you have mountain views all around, and it is an outside pool despite the fact that it can be very cold up there. The water temperature is 40 degrees C and so it is very hot. It is reccommended that one does not stay in there for more than 20 minutes at a time, but it was clear that people were staying in longer than that (including me and Elaine), though if you keep getting out and getting back in its o.k Elaine said she felt quite dizzy after sitting in the springs but ... read more

Can you believe it, one week today we start out on our travels. I've been packed for about a month, but am constantly revising it. Keegan, may pack the night before if he can manage to stay home long enough. We are going on a travel agent's Fam to China. I know 3 other agents that are going to be on this tip. We begin in Bejiing and end in Shanghai. We are doing a 4 night Yantze River Cruise, through the 3 gorges. Bye for now.... read more

Well 8 months have passed and I'm back in Banff. I'm not sure that anyone believed me at the time when I said I would come back here but here I am! The place is exactly the same (not surprising really!), just quieter, and it's cold! It's colder than it was the day that we arrived in February (the taxi driver said that it was meant to get to 17 degrees this afternoon though, I'm not sure that I believe him!). There's no snow, but there is a really heavy frost, and there is snow on the hilltops around the town. I caught the greyhound here from Vancouver, it took about 13 hours over night. It wasn't as bad as I expected as I slept most of it, and seeing dawn break over the mountains this ... read more

Well, although all that is left of Mark and I's trip to the "land of smiles" are pictures, soveniers and a pile of memories - FEAR NOT! As Mark and I will be returning ASAP. To tell you the truth, the only thing that is getting me through school right now, is knowing the fact that I will be out of this country in less that 215 days. Yeah... that's a long time, but it's a light at the end of the long, dark tunnel called "University". I am presently looking in to some volunteering projects in Thailand. I would like to spend a month teaching English and then travel though Thailand for a month, and then over to Vietnam and Laos. All depends on funds though. As for Mark - I am sure he will ... read more
