We've spent the last few days generally taking it easy and getting to know Banff and its surrounds. I was fully prepared to not like Banff, given how big a tourist destination it is, but must admit I have been pleasantly surprised. Yes, admittedly, it is touristy, very touristy, too touristy, but unlike many similar places, underneath it all, it does possess a genuine, inoffensive charm that no amount of marketing can either replicate or destroy. As long as you walk past the duty-free and souvenir shops, you will find, at its core, a thriving little mountain town in an unforgettably beautiful setting. And what better way to remedy our days of undernourishment, living off a monodiet of crackers, tomatoes and cheese, than by dining at a few of Banff's finer restaurants? We had quite the ... read more

Just to confirm our worst suspicions, while shaking out the tent during pack-up this morning, we were showered not with water droplets but rather projectile ice cubes - I kid you not. Luckily, our next stop, Banff, is meant to be marginally warmer. The day was spent taking our time along the scenic drive between Lake Louise and Banff, where we set up camp in a nice spot on Tunnel Mountain (yes, yes, we should know better by now than to keep camping up mountains). Since there was some time left before nightfall, this was our chance to go looking for the elusive elk we'd been reading so much about. Local sources told us that the best place to fulfil this mission, believe it or not, was the Banff Fairmont Hotel's golf course. Apparently, elk, being ... read more

Last night took our 'freezing-in-our-tent' experience to new and icy levels. We should have guessed, I expect, by Lake Louise's impressive elevation - 1540 m above sea level. In fact, it claims to be the highest permanent settlement in Canada. So, our night was a long haul of lying awake trying not to transform into frozen carcasses, serenaded by the ever-present tooting of trains (we seem to be closer to the train line than ever at this campground) and the sounds of a raucous school group who decided to be our neighbours after we'd already pitched our tent and it was too late to turn and flee :-). We concluded the best thing for our groggy state was some sight-seeing, so we set off nice and early to see the Lake herself in all her glory. ... read more

The next morning, at the beautiful Takakkaw Falls, we were delighted by the antics of a little chipmunk, our first close-up wildlife encounter of the trip. Not that you could really call him wild. He had stolen a morsel someone had dropped on the ground and was contentedly munching away on his prize, blissfully unconcerned about its questionable nutritional value and the spectacle he was creating. Next, we set off to the famous Emerald Lake, stopping along the way at the point where the milky Yoho joins with the raging Kicking Horse River (aptly named, 'Meeting of the Waters') and the roaring Hamilton Falls. Emerald Lake is apparently best viewed at dawn and dusk, when it radiates a brilliant green hue as its namesake suggests. We were there near the middle of the day, when the ... read more

Septmeber 9th Less spectacular scenery than usual today. The driving rain doesn't help. By afternoon we had left the mountains and were on the prarie. Wide open grassland in need of the rain. Lunch by a feature called the Erratics at Okotoks. These were huge stones carried from Jasper, a few hundred kilometers away, and dropped by a glacier as it melted. They rest in the middle of a field surrounded by, well nothing really. This makes them stand out even more. Too wet & windy to linger, so a quick circuit and a couple of photos. We did not ignore the signs and climb on them but there were others who gave in to the temptation. This makes the boys think I am more of a meanie than I really am. Hard I know. On ... read more

August 19 Golden Wake up to tea in bed and a beautiful view of the mountains from the window. On advice we decide to take an easy hike today. Joan and Don do a lot of hiking and have several ideas of places to go. We walk through tremendous woods in the Yoho National Park for about 45 minutes ..only a little up and down... and arrive at a view of Wapta Falls from the top.. Amazing. The pale blue water cascades down with a backdrop of mountains and trees. A fairly steep climb down using the handy tree roots as steps to the base of the falls. Once out of the trees the view opens up to spray, a retaining earth mound and the river curving round a small island and continuing it's path back ... read more

quote The two most powerful warriors are patience and time.----------Leo Tolstoy August 17, 2005, Wednesday. We arrived at Waterton International Peace Park, situated at the southwest corner of Alberta on the US border. Actually quite small 210 square miles, but eons of geological activity which have left a legacy of richly colored mountains and canyons and lots of nice hiking areas. We located The Historic Kilmorey Lodge our home for the next two nights. We thought it would be pleasant to spend some time out of the Bothan. Well, it was a rainy day and we could not get into the room until 3 PM, so we drove around and walked some. We had lunch at the Prince of Wales lodge. The soup was cold, the salad was ok, the price was too high, and the ... read more

August 17 Calgary Say goodbye to the Hall family and are driven to the airport by Elaine. Our first flight is to Chicago and we have to renew our US visa even though we are not going out of the airport. Contarary to popular rumour this proves to be a piece of cake. Flight on time and uvneventful apart from it being the smallest plane we have travelled on so far.. Try to retrieve our bags at O'Hare but they have been transferred to our next flight, brilliant. Amuse ourselves by window shopping and eating and drinking for several hours at the airport. Find we are not at the right gate but have plenty of time to correct that. About 10 minutes before boarding time Owen goes for a walk with his music headphones firmly in ... read more
