We were excited to start our road trip and picked up our rental car first thing in the morning to head for Japser. Driving out of the city was fairly easy, but once we got to Highway No.5 we were cautioned of 'Extreamly Slippery Icy Roads,' and frequently saw these signs until very soon we saw many cars and even a few trucks that had slid off the road. Scary stuff, but we were careful and made it safely to Jasper. Once we arrived in Jasper we went for a drive through town and explored a little around the national park and had our first very close encounter with the wildlife- Three Caribou just on the side of the road. They were so calm and relaxed and weren't bothered by our car at all, ofcoarse we ... read more

Hi everyone Got to try and catch up before I set sail ( well fly actually) to Ontario tomorrow. So where was I - setting off on the Icefields Highway to Jasper I think. This is one of those roads in the world that you don't want to miss - and it does not fail to live up to expcectations - the mountain scenery and colours of the rivers and lakes as well as the autumn colours of the trees and most of the time the sun was shining made this an exceptional trip. There was snow on the mountains and that outlines the rock beds and made it look even more beautiful...so we were in awe most of the time. This was the chance for the girls to have a go at driving Billybob and ... read more

It's hard to believe that it's been a year since we got married! It's been a crazy year, and as an anniversary present, my mum bought us a sign that we've been looking at for a while. It says "Jasper or Bust" on it, and that pretty much sums up our first year of marriage. Obviously not the "bust" part, but for us, the last year has been a crazy challenge and at times we weren't really sure if we could make it in Jasper. But we have!! We've been here for 9 months and we're feeling a bit more settled, and enjoying the experience of living in the mountains. So we wanted to do something cool for our first anniversary. Jamie's boss has connections at JPL (where we got married) and managed to get us ... read more

Today was a big day for us! We went on a glacier hike and then came back along the icefields parkway and checked out the waterfalls along the Sunwapta and Athabasca rivers. We woke up early (for us) and drove the 1.5hrs down the Icefield Parkway to the Columbia Icefield visitor center. From this point you can see the various glaciers coming east from the columbia icefield and it's also where the large buses (called Brewsters) leave to go up onto the glacier. We did not want to do the touristy thing so we booked a guided hike/climb up onto the Athabasca glacier. This glacier retreats 100s of feet every 10 years... the center is over a mile from the ice and it is sitting at the 1902 sign post (they have signs every 10 years ... read more

Yesterday we booked a trip on the Athabasca glacier but it had to occur on Friday (Thursday was a 6hr trip, we wanted a 3hr trip). Today is Thursday so we decided to hit some of the other major attractions in Jasper NP. We started off at Mt. Edith Clavell. Mt. EC is a very large mountain in the park and has multiple glaciers on it. There is a trail that takes you up to the lake at the base of the mountain as well as up another ridge to the high meadows. The total hike was about 5km and 1350 vertical feet. Clavell meadows was no longer in bloom with wildflowers but the climb was full of very fragrant pine trees. The climb was quite steep (most of the climbing was over a 1km section) ... read more

We’re off! It rained hard early this morning but we stayed nice and dry in the tent… so far it has held up very well. We got to camp around 7:30-8pm last night and set up the tent. I looked over to the next campsite and 3 large elk were wandering on through! We worked until about 9:30 getting the camp ready (rain tarp, got a fire going, etc.). The wood was supplied by the campground (no picking wood off the ground) and it sucked. The wood was very green and could not be lit due to the lack of tinder. Greg used the “scoutmaster helper” - white gas. We finally got settled in around 10 and finished off the leftover spaghetti. Our site is near the bathrooms which are very nice & clean. I couldn’t ... read more

We’re on the road- CA 1 to the C5 toll road. The toll booth operator was funny - asked if we had anything to declare. We said no (middle of BC?) and he said ‘that’s OK, I’m not a border, just bored”. J The last mile of climb before the booth was very steep for a highway but the RAV4 made it! An extra 2 cylinders in the engine would have certainly have helped though! The drive from Abbotsford was very beautiful - lots of huge mountains and scenic valleys. There were a lot of boulders and rock slides as well as tall fences to keep wildlife off the highway. We only saw a lot of moo-cows… Greg says that this is a large ranching area. Observation - a lot of places in Canada take AmEx ... read more

Well this is our third day in Jasper National Park after yet again a crazy train delay. Yesterday we climbed Whisper Mountain which is literally behind our hostel. Its 8km up and 8km back down again (so roughly 10 miles) and we did it all! Took about 4 hours to get up and just under 2 to get back down. The views were amazing!! Then the 24th which was Sunday I went white water rafting. Was so beautiful as the river ran amongst all of the mountains and the trees. Still didn't see any bears though. Last night the guy who drives the hostel shuttle bus even took us out bear spotting and we still didn't see any. We did see a deer and a squeaky mountain mouse thing though. Also a beautiful lake and this ... read more

Early in the morning of our first day in Whistlers and just enjoying a cuppa tea, the crows set up a lot of commotion as they chased a coyote from their territory. The animal ran down the pathway right past the motor home, we would have been able to get a great shot but the guy next to us was busy cleaning his windshield so as soon as the coyote saw him he really sped up, so my pictures are completely blurred. We settled down to breakfast when we could hear a squeak, looked out of the door to see a herd of mule deer (does and fawns) walking through the park. More excitement, they were so used to humans they didn’t flinch so we got some good photos. There are a lot of mule deer ... read more
