We started out in beautiful weather and it continued until we had finished all of our sightseeing. We drove to Jasper, Alberta in Jasper NP. It was pretty going into Jasper and from there south it is nothing short of spectacular. The pictures just do NOT do it justice. This was the most incredible day of our trip. Every turn brought more jagged peaks, with snow and glaciers - - it was kind of like Glacier NP only about 160 miles long. We saw a grizzly bear, some loons, a couple deer, and some rock sheep, and some big horn sheep. I’ll let the photos speak for themselves !!! I took 232 photos today, but will only show about a dozen. ... read more

So glad to sleep in a little bit this morning. Decided to head to Jasper NP which is just north of Banff about 2 ½ hours. We stopped at a ½ mile trail and hiked to a falls. There was a hole in the rock beside the waterfall kind of like a cave that we walked through and were able to see the falls just a few feet away. The boys loved the cave! They got tired on this hike, but did well. Nathan keeps scaring us to death though. He is our little adventurous one who loves to explore and see what’s down by the rushing river or what’s around the next corner so he just runs and bounces everywhere! We have told him a hundred times I bet to “stay on the trail”,” stay ... read more

(By Darryl) DAY 21: Monday 3rd May 2010 - TO JASPER (again!) Up, breakfast and packed the car in record time - leaving the motel at 10:30, to a sunny/cloudy morning The problem tyre was pretty flat again this morning so I eased the car down to the garage to pump it up and we all drove down to the Chrysler dealer to see about getting the puncture fixed and possibly a replacement spare wheel. Well they don’t have any rims that fit for a spare, and turns out the flat tyre is stuffed - with two big holes that have previously been badly patched. Another patch could result in a blowout and with no spare its not worth the risk. Canmore Chrysler don’t carry tyres so we have to wait around while they hunt down ... read more

Jasper—More than a dot on the map! Our plan to go to Jasper was frivolous—we had perused the map of BC and seen that the road past the Columbia Icefields went north to Jasper and then there were roads from there heading back south. We had no idea what a treat and challenge and bed of serendipity the Jasper area would be for us. We got to Whistlers Campground in Jasper National Park about 4pm and joined the peak hour rush of RVs trying to get a campsite for the night. All the powered sites were taken (as they were every night we were there) so some large vehicles were turning around, heading for a venue which would allow a continuation of their 21st century (dying?) lifestyle, but most accepted a tent site and hunkered down ... read more

Icefields Parkway and Columbia Icefields Friday Sept 18: The Icefields Parkway (Highway 93) runs north from Lake Louise to Jasper, and it's all within the territory of Banff National Park and Jasper National Park. It's a spectauclar drive! (230km/144mi.) Although I rode along part of it in 1970 with my 3 friends, Ellen, Marty and Kitty, just after we left college, I had no memory of its grandeur. I can only think it must have been a rainy, cloudy day so we couldn't see it, because it seems it would be impossible to forget this road otherwise. And I do recall it raining when we stood on the Columbia Icefields on that trip. National Geographic has called this “One of the World's Ten Greatest Drives”, and although I have no way of knowing how true this ... read more

The trip from Lake Louise up to Jasper was supposed to be one of the best drives in Canada in terms of mountain scenery, and did not disappoint. It was made even better by Trent and Stacey, the couple on their way home to Hinton (northeast of Jasper) who not only stopped and gave me a lift all the way, but went above and beyond the call of duty. They bought me lunch, and stopped at the points of interest on the way, such as Bow Lake and the Athabasca Falls (which, had I gone by bus, I would have missed). Having dropped me off at the hostel, they then gave me ride into town to get some groceries, and even a lift back again! Canada could not ask for better ambassadors. Jasper is another tourist ... read more

Ok so it's another National Park but there was so much to see and do up here - rather than me ramble on about it I thought we should add a few more photos and videos than usual that tell the story a little better. So, first there was the icefield's parkway - one of the World's great drives up from Lake Louise (one of the seven natural wonders of the world - although I don't know how they work these things out - I've heard of there are hundreds of them) to Jasper. The weather was mixed but we soon forgot about that when we spied a bear demolishing berries on the side of the road - we did what all the guidelines expresly forbid you from doing and pulled over for a photography session ... read more

Bill woke me up just before 9 am to let me know breakfast was almost ready! What a treat to have someone else cook breakfast and the coffee already on. After breakfast, Bill headed into town for work and Maggie and I had a great visit, while Otis had fun chasing all the cats outside! After the laundry was finished, off to Golden, to visit with Bill before heading out on the road. Left Golden around 1 (happy with reconnecting with Bill and Maggie), and back up to Banff and onto the Ice Fields road! Glacier after Glaciers! It was something else. Made it to Jasper in time for supper! And finally some wild life on the road! Saw some cute sheep (you should see them jumping onto the rocks, up and down the hills!) and ... read more

Day 50. Monday. It's been a sight filled day. I was in no rush to get up since I was'nt going anywhere except for a ride today. Several years ago my then boss introduced me to the idea of putting bacon on a chicken sandwich. Bacon being my favorite swine product, with pork rines a close second, does'nt have a bad use as far as I'm concerned and it goes nice with chicken. Why am I telling you this? Once I did get up I warmed up the remaining cajon chicken sandwich meat and some bacon of breakfast. By then it was about 11:00 and time to go for a ride. East from here seemed like the obvious way to go since I came in from the West and am going to leave to the South. ... read more
