Well what an experience this was. Our guide Dieter took us through the canyon which was now frozen and the river and waterfalls frozen with it. It was so cold, -23c, that two of the camera’s stopped working. Words can’t describe it adequately so click here to see the photos of the url=http://swimmingaroundtheworld.com/Swimming_Around_The_World/My_Albums_-_Canada/Pages/Icewalk.htmlicewalk... read more

'We spent Monday night in Jasper at the Pyramid Lake Resort, a rustic group of cottage-like two storey walk-ups overlooking a tiny clear-watered lake. The room was ordinary but the service and the breakfast were exceptional. The dining room had cathedral ceilings with floor to ceiling windows and a huge fieldstone fireplace. Tuesday morning we visited the Miette Hot Springs. On the way we saw a group of female big horn sheep grazing at the side of the highway. We were able to get quite close to them to take photos. There were others casually climbing the ridiculously steep cliffs above us. At the hot springs, I was disappointed to discover that the water is chlorinated to remove the sulfur smell so I couldn’t go in, but Mark and Sam enjoyed a long, leisurely soak. Every ... read more

On Monday we left Banff headed towards Jasper on the Icefields highway. This route is considered one of the most picturesque in the world and there are literally hundreds of places to stop and take photos along the way. We pulled over at half a dozen or so roadside views to admire a glacier or a water falls, a river or a valley, before we reached our main destination - the Columbia Icefields. We took a tour of the Athabasca glacier on a Brewster Sno Coach, a hybrid bus with enormous tires, that travels out onto the ice. The tour guide was very personable and informative. The road onto the ice is incredibly steep as it travels down the lateral moraine (the rock pile created by the glacier along it's sides). At the bottom is a ... read more

Hi family and friends, We're in Jasper, Alberta about 140 miles north of Banff. We've been in the Canadian rockies for close to 2 weeks and loving it! Haven't had any internet or news for a couple of weeks but today is a little rainy so we're in town at a coffe bar with internet. If you like the mountains, hiking and cool weather then it doesn't get any better than this! We'll be in Jasper for 6 nights then head down to Waterton Lakes NP. We've been to 4 Canadian NP's. Everything is more expensive here but worth it. Add more later...... read more

It’s been a while since I’ve been able to get internet access, so this might be longer than usual... After leaving Fort St John I headed west along the Peace River valley to visit the W.A.C. Bennett hydro-electric dam, and the Peace Canyon hydro-electric dam. Overnight at a very busy Moberley Lake campground just outside the town of Chetwynd, then headed east again, to Dawson Creek. No sign of James Van Der Beek, Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson or the blonde one whose name I can’t remember. (Oh, apparently that was Dawson’s Creek. And it was set in Boston, not Canada) Anyway, Dawson Creek is the start point of the Alaska Highway. Apart from one 20-mile long section (which I missed out because of my trip to the hydro-electric dams), I have managed to drive all of ... read more

Part 2 The short and skinny is this... We packed the car with extra clothes (just in case we fell into the lake while canoeing), our frozen yogurt breakfasts, bug spree (because no matter where I am those Mosquito's find me!), our cameras, some water and sunscreen. Just a quick jaunt down the winding twisting road and we were back at Hwy 16A heading West to Maligne Lake! It took twenty-three minutes to reach the correct road. And another forty-three minutes to reach the lake thanks to the avid circuit driving skills securely implanted into my arms, hands, eyes and feet! "Honestly, officer, I didn't see the sign stating 50km per hour due to Caribou crossing the road?" or "Didn't you see the sign with the Large Bull Elk drawn upon it, this is why ... read more

It's a super simple idea... Sell all of your things, move to South Korea to teach english! except no one predict the bumps in the travel road between moving out of Calgary and actually reaching our destination at Gyeonggi English Village. So, while we try to avoid confrontation with the in-law's while crashing in their home, we've decided to take short trips around Northern Alberta, to pass the time! PART 1 Since, I have never been to Jasper National Park and Shauna hadn't ever been to Miette Hot Springs, we packed up the rental car (which will cost two arms & a leg in the end) and drove the 3 1/2 hours West, to enjoy the views surrounding the Northern Canadian Rocky Mountains! Jasper, is a small tourist town, with it's tourist season being in the ... read more

When: 1st-4th July Where: Jasper National Park Weather: 20C - 3C Mileage: 1000km Highlight: Largest glacier S of Alaska, camping/biking experience, wildlife viewings & general drive along Icefield Parkway Jasper National Park After our very first visit to Banff National Park, the immediate action performed was to reserve a campsite at Jasper for the July1st weekend. Campgrounds fill up fast during long weekends & it is impossible to find a site on such days. The weather painted different colors before our trip. But with our previous experiences, we always knew that no weather is permanent in the mountains. Thursday, 1st July CANADA DAY! There was no sign of such a day as we left home. But I knew there would be later in the evening. There was a little something planne... read more
