When: 19th - 21st June Where: Edmonton, the capital city Highights: A lot of biking, walking the WEM & of course the first camping experience in warm weather Weather: 30C - 12C Mileage: 630km Leaving home around 8.30am, we followed the almost straight road, the Deerfoot Trail, N to Edmonton. 299km and 3 hours later, we reached our campground. As expected, S slept most of the way. The campground was almost full. Thankfully I reserved it a day ago. Somewhere along the drive, both of us realized that it was a longer drive than we expected & since we started late, we would do justice if we stayed one more day. So. After setting up camp, we drove right to Fort Edmonton Park. Taking the River Loop Trail, we started our bike jo... read more

Perspective (per-spek-tiv) to compare something to other things so that it can be accurately and fairly judged. Rene and I have been married for 26 years, have 3 amazing adult children, Amanda, Cyndi and Scott. We are also blessed with 2 fantastic son-in-laws, our son's lovely girlfriend and now a beautiful granddaughter. We purchased a Kawasawki Vulcan touring bike several years ago and have decided that we love being on the bike. For us there is something very freeing about jumping on the bike with just the luggage we can carry on the bike, the wind blowing against us and an amazing feeling of feedom and abandon. We have been on several trips on our bike, some very short little hops and other longer ones. We have always dreamt about travelling and seeing the world. After ... read more

So I've decided that I'm going to use TravelBlog for this trip, rather than my old Blogger blog. The functionality of TravelBlog for when you're going from place to place and country to country is pretty nifty. Look here for updates as I travel this summer! In the meantime, here's a photo of home to keep you amused.... read more

DAY 2: Wednesday 14th April 2010 - EDMONTON (by Darryl) Well we all slept heavily and woke about 7am, down to breakfast around 9am-ish and we feasted on all the free food to fill up for the day (bagels, English muffins and Grape jelly was a hit). We intended on visiting the enourmous West Ed Mall today, but after trying to arrange a bus and finding we needed exact change (still finding the coins pretty odd - no 50 cent, but 25cents, the 5cent is big and the 10cent tiny!) we also realized we would be better off sorting out some other critical things first (such as a phone and mobile internet etc). So we spent most of the day in the local City Centre Mall which was about 4 floors and we didn’t get around ... read more

DAY 1: Tuesday 13th April 2010 (NZ Time) - AUCKLAND / SYDNEY / VANCOUVER / EDMONTON (by Darryl) From the plane: Well its hard to believe we are actually going, after more than 6 months of research, planning, costing and changing plans! The plane travel is exciting, and I don't think this will all sink in until we touch down on Canadian soil... We didn’t finish the final packing and cleanup at home til quite late and we stayed the night at Maria’s house, although Sarah & I only had 1.5hrs sleep before the shuttle arrived at 2am to pick us up. The first incident happened at Auckland Airport when Lachie almost got gobbled up by an escalator up to the viewing deck! At first I thought he was just kidding around when he was wiggling ... read more

I was ready all set to go, had my big family dinner at an amazing greek resturant, said good-bye to my family members and headed home. I had my bags packed, still was scared and nervous but I was getting on the plane tomorrow and I was excited. But then my world fell apart when I had to go to Emergency just a few hours from getting back from dinner. I have been advised by my doctor to postpone my flight until I can have surgery. WHAT THE HELL!! I cried, I yelled, I was mad. Is this really happening? All my planning, preping and getting pumped up for this trip all came crashing down on me. In the morning I pulled myself together and started email everyone. I cancelled my hostel, my couchsurfing, and my ... read more

West Edmonton Mall is the biggest mall in the world from 1981 until 2004 until the title was taken by South China Mall.... West Edmonton Mall apparently have over 800 stores and ranges more than 7 different attractions.... from waterpark... to amusement park... to marine park... and ice rink... and shooting range... West Edmonton Mall was the place to be.... I love love love shopiing and I don't know how much I can stress that... so defienetely the biggest playground for me...
