I've been back in country fro a little over 2 weeks, usually when I travel I write a lot more than I have this trip, I'm not sure if it's because this is not a new place or if I have just not been quite myself but I haven't felt the urge to write. The trip over was long. I flew out of Sydney on the 29th of June. Stopped in San Francisco on the way. After clearing US customs (which is always nervous) I had a well deserved cigarette. For a smoker the first cigarette after a long flight is always special. It always seems sweeter. An indicaiton of the level of addiction I guess. I was keen to check out Spider Murphy's tattoo shop. Peter from Hold Fast was tattooed by Stuart and Theo ... read more

So I missed the trip to Elk Island to see deer, bison, etc because I thought I wouldn;t get back in time to make my flight (little did I know!). I was also a bit bummed to miss hockey season in Canada, thinking no one cares about hockey when it's 85 degrees and sunny until 11 pm. Then I found out about Oilers Prospect Camp. I made my way to a small local hockey rink in Clareview to watch 2 hours of the Edmonton Oilers hockey prospects camp. Some are 18 year old kids drafted out of high school, college kids from the US, or older junior league players from Canada. The hot prospects are Eberle, Taylor Hall (who looks like he belongs in the Twight movies), and Magnus from Sweeden. And man was Magnus good. ... read more

I'm still stuck in Edmonton. Long story short DO NOT use SKY SHUTTLE to get to the airport even if you are broke. It took 2 hours to make a 35 minute ride. It is now 10:30 and I am back at the Sutton Place, a lovely hotel, were I was given 20 dollars worth of free food and drink and free chocholate covered strawberries. Thank you! I still am amazed by the fact it is light out at 10:38 pm. Not broad day light but twilight which is why I am still awake. I had a great time at the ice rank today which I'll put in a new post. ... read more

Well, after an exciting week and a bit, we’re now in Alberta, the western-most of the Canadian "Prairie Provinces". After we left Skagway in Alaska, we headed back across White Pass into Canada (the journey was just as spectacular on the way up as it was on the way into the US - some of the best scenery that we have seen so far). Once we crossed White Pass, we returned to the town of Carcross, and attempted (but failed) to have a cycle around the Montana Mountain bike trails. We’re convinced that half of the places listed on these maps & guides really do not exist in reality. We then turned east and headed towards Taglish and Atlin. Once we got passed Little Atlin Lake, though, the road turned into dusty pot-hole ridden gravel again, ... read more

I arrived just in the knick of time for my poster session. I brought only carry-on items, breezed through customs in 5 minutes, and took a taxi directly to the Shaw Center. By 6:05 pm my poster was up at the session at the International Congress of Conservation Biology. Yeah! My advisor arrived at 6:45 or so. This was my first time to meet her in person and I will not see her again until I graduate. A bit wild but it's the Prescott College way. Edmonton is an okay city. I skipped the meeting festivites tonight and headed to the Edmonton Capitals baseball game. They beat Tijuana Cimmarrones 14-5. It was fun and more people were there than the tourism agent at Edmonton Tourism told me would be there. The capitals are in the Golden ... read more

The simplest way to put this is we are stranded in Alberta awaiting further documentation to arrive in Seoul, through the UPS Overnight Superman Express courier system! Shauna and I are sitting around trying to come up with the best ways to abide our time without spending too much money, since we are suppose to arrive in Seoul with at least $500 USD each, until we earn our first pay checks! yikes! Yikes... is the reasoning behind having to fly from Edmonton to San Francisco via Vancouver, so that we both may receive our "Moral Character" interviews at the Korean Consulate of our designated jurisdiction area. Furthermore, leaving our passports with the Consulate for an overnight stay at the beautiful Wharf's of two beautiful cities, in order to receive the E2 Visa Stamp, into our passports! ... read more

We picked up Nancy's sister, Janet, at the airport and when right to lunch at the West Edmonton Mall. It's the largest mall in North America. Where is the largest one? Hong Kong? Dubai? Anyway, there are over 800 stores, a full amusement park, a water park, a hockey rink, and over 200 restaurants. We had lunch and then went to see the replica of the Santa Maria, Columbus' ship. It was funny to see it in a mall, floating on its own little lake. That was enough mall for us. We went to our little house. Janet helped Nancy with a knitting project because Jan is a master knitter extraordinaire. It's great to have her with us to share our adventure!... read more

Today was a down day to catch up. We went to town and did our laundry and washed the truck. Of course within a few hours we had a thunderstorm and it got rained on. We were wondering why we got so hot when it was only 75 degrees and it finally dawned on us that it was the humidity. We sure aren't used to it! Here's proof that this is a cold place n winter. Look at the plug-ins for the staff for engine block heaters in the winter at the local elementary school! We also saw the plug-ins in all the motel parking lots. Tomorrow is Canada Day so it's a four day weekend for a lot of people up here. The campground is filling up fast! we had to look up Canada day ... read more

On Monday the 28th of June, we received a phone call from our recruiter Asia’s personal assistant explaining to us that we needed to obtain transcripts from the Art Institute of Seattle to complete the requirement for the 4-year Bachelor’s degree because the official transcripts from Australia plus my original bachelor’s diploma wasn’t sufficient enough. Then the following day, I spoke to Asia and she emailed to us two more Health Statement forms for both Shauna and I to fill out because somehow the first one’s we sent were not the correct Health Forms, too! The kicker is Shauna nor myself even thought about obtaining the Art Institute transcripts because the original diploma was included in the paperwork plus all the other random papers that we were trying to obtain seemed more important or at ... read more

Materialism preoccupation with or emphasis on material objects, comforts, and considerations It's been about a month since my last entry, so time again to talk about this amazing adventure Rene and I are embarking on. We are a week away from leaving and both of us are filled with many different and often conflicting emotions. Mostly we are excited to get on the road. Sometimes though we are nervous, scared and feeling somewhat afraid. Nervous about leaving the security that we think we have here, scared about what this whole adventure holds for us and missing our kids and GRANDBABY and afraid of truly living out this long dreamed about dream. We're finding that we dreamed about this for so long and now that we are on the cusp of living it, all kinds of questions ... read more
