We woke up early yesterday at Emerald Lake Lodge and decided to head down to the lake to get some photos. The weather was better and the lake was more still. We wandered down to the bridge that leads to the lodges from the tourist car park. There were very few people around and it was so peaceful and still. The blue colour was really shining through as well. After walking about for a bit we decided to have breakfast here before heading on to Banff. We had gingerbread pancakes and coffee which was good. Once we finished breakfast it was back to the lodge before wheeling the cases down the hill to the main reception to check out and get the shuttle bus back to the car. As we were heading to the reception we ... read more

Spent a nice night and Dick's RV in Great Falls, Montana. As we were hooking up, our neighbor, Brent, had his grill going and volunteered to cook our cheese dogs for us, so we were able to sit right down to dinner. Tom (of course) complained that he missed cocktail hour. Friendly Brent & wife winter in Southern CA and motorhome for 8 months. Beautiful sunshine this morning and we were on the road by 7:30. The little Mrs. (Sally) took her turn at the wheel. As we travel along we are amazed at the huge expanse of this beautiful country of ours! After wolfing down five little oranges and a dozen Bing cherries in about ten minutes, we sailed thru Customs with narry a question about whether we had any fruit on board! Was going ... read more

Odometer reading: 1609 We slept in! Fixed a big breakfast then took the bus into Banff, named for BanffShire in Scotland. Banff is the highest town in Canada with an elevation of 4537 feet. The Banff national Park, Canada's first, was designated are United Nations world heritage site in 1985. Many consider it to be the most spectacular scenery in North America. We agree! Rain was forecast for the afternoon so we opted to take the gondola up the mountain in the morning to appreciate the views without cloud cover. Good choice! The panoramic scenery was magnificent – – please use your thesaurus for adjectives that elaborate on this thing. All of them will apply! From the gondola drop off we hiked up the Vista Trail boardwalk To Sanson's national historic site (one of 7). Sally ... read more

Geo: 51.1752, -115.573If I were forced to choose I'd have to admit that I liked Jasper a little more than Banff. It had more of the ski village/holiday town feel to it. Banff has grown into a small city (we counted 3 Tim Hortons to the 1 we saw in Jasper) and it did feel a little crowded at times. That said, the crown jewel of this part of the world, Lake Louise, is right next door to Banff.Because of its stunning setting, Lake Louise is a photographers destination in the winter and summer seasons. We were in between seasons so the lake was covered in the slushy remains of winter so it was not the right time of year to capture one of those magical hang-on-the-wall images. And apparently it wasn't even the right time ... read more

Day: 8 Distance: 2853 Departing Whitefish I took US 93 north. Nice scenery, beautiful trees, gorgeous snow capped mountains in the distance, and rain, rain, rain, rain. Double ugh, with a yuk here and there. Normally I don't mind rain (as Kim knows) but all I can think about is the up-and-coming campsite where I have to setup in this soup. My only hope is to see if a few hundred miles will relieve some of this gloom (it didn't). Meanwhile I tried to enjoy the lack of glare (small yea - a Monty Python yea). At the border, I meet the nice people of the Canadian Customs Service. Me being a terrorist AND a drug mule made for some nervous customs interaction let me tell you (that was tongue-in-cheek NSA). I wondered how I would ... read more

Had one last trip up to Banff and Canmore today as this will probably be the last chance I get to see the Canadian Rockies. Had a stint of seeing some wild life in their natural herd as a group of deer were relaxing in the snow and admiring the view of the mountains, went and had a dip in the Hot Springs one last time then managed to explore a part of Banff I had not experienced before. I found a slippery trail along the edge of the Bow River to find the Bow falls and a beautiful little viewing area of where the Bow River disappears into the mountains. Probably wasn't wearing the best shoes for the icy path and stairs that I walked along, up and down but managed to see some nice ... read more

Alone - Two Green Cats " I was familiar with storms, and enjoyed them, knowing well that in right relation with them they are ever kindly." John Muir, The Discovery of Glacier Bay by it's Discoverer My anguish for living is what as driven me where I am right now. If you have read my previous blog posts, you can easily see what mind of person I am. How intensely I love, how much the environment and individuality means to me. How young, lucky and easily impressed I am. There is a certain romance to living homeless on your bike, enjoying different places and presence for the length of time I wish to and learning new things. There is in every young adult the hunger for the unknown, the travel bug awaiting your weakest moment to ... read more

C: We've been in Banff for 3 days now and are really enjoying it. Yesterday we made a second attempt to drive up to Lake Louise - success! The road was much better and the clouds were higher so we could see most of the mountain tops. The lake itself was very impressive, huge, and beautifully framed by the Victoria glaciers and surrounding mountains. After taking the obligatory photos and wandering round the lake for a bit we headed to the ski area where we had been told that ski lifts were available to take us up the mountain. Unlike in the Alps they were not at all prepared for the possibility that you might want to go up on the lift for sightseeing and not skiing and the man operating the chairlift looked at us ... read more

R: So, we cheated a little. The bus to Banff National Park worked out to be at least 14 hours on a Greyhound bus, and cost only £20 less than a flight to Calgary, which is a 1 hour drive from Banff, our home for 5 days. So we missed out Revelstoke and headed straight for Banff. And we are glad we did. We got soaked on the way to Vancouver airport. Really soaked. And the plane felt like it might fall out of the sky as it climbed to escape the cloud. But in Calgary on the other side of the Rocky Mountains, it was clear skies and 3c. The drive up to Banff is on a big highway and you get quite a view on the last few KMs. We ended up staying in ... read more

Get ‘em out by Friday-Genesis The thing is; I don’t like talking about Politic. But people assume the opposite when I tell them I studied geopolitics in cégep. It brings me down; like any other sensible being. It gets so confusing so fast, trying to keep straight who has done what, and it is even worse when you try to tie why to who’s gain. The majority of the people I try to maintain a level headed conversation on high impact decisions and means of power with, end up getting biased; parents will put economics and affordability first, dreaming activists will try to push what they take as a forgotten priority while setting the rest aside, frustrated easily-impressed mind will follow the most convincing underdog, forgetting their on reflexions on the line, hard workers will put ... read more
