On every trip, every where, every time, you always get hit with the same statement... "You have to go there... you can't miss it!!" and with the more travellers you meet, the list gets longer and longer until you simply can't see everything. I know I've been guilty of it... and I'm pretty sure that if everyone was under oath then they'd say the same. Luckily for me, my style of travelling with only a vague idea of my route and timeline is sympathetic to these kind of situations. At other times, some of the places mentioned were never going to be left off the itinerary. Banff was definitely one of the latter! Now that I had some time on the snow under my belt, I was itching to find some more... and as luck would ... read more

Rather than a winter getaway to the sun, this year I went on three day trips with the Skrastins Outdoor Club. While most of the members enjoyed a day of skiing or snowshoeing, a few of us less intrepid types enjoyed walking in the crisp mountain air. Banff is close to home for Calgarians, easy to take for granted. Looked at through a traveller's eyes, it is a world-class resort. Those are the eyes that took the photos for today's blog. We got off the bus near the former golf course in the morning and got on the bus in the afternoon at the Banff Springs Hotel.... read more

Calgary is such a huge city, what are the odds that I have 2 relatives from opposite sides of the family living 3 minutes away from each other. My cousin David and his wife Lucie just had an adorable happy little baby boy named Quinn. I have never really had much contact with babies and I have to say Quinn was a learning experience for me! A baby is a lot of work, hard work! Lucie is an amazing mother, cook and somehow even has time to hike mountains and make her own yogurt! David and Lucie are hydro geologists and are both extremely intelligent. The second day I was staying with them we went out to Banff and climbed Tunnel Mountain with little Quinn in the baby backpack, and Sam, their wonderful dog running around! ... read more

The Ancell's and the Gerdes' headed out of camp at 8:30 this morning. We had a full day of fun ahead of us. First on the agenda was a horseback trail ride through the Bow Valley. It was a gorgeous ride, but I discovered trying to take pictures while horseback riding is a little difficult. I did get a few good shots, but trust me the scenery was awesome. I had not been riding since the hip and knee replacements so I was not too sure what to expect. We all concluded it was fun, but an hour on horseback was enough. Next we went up to Bow Valley Falls where we hiked up A LOT of stairs to see a fast running water wonder. If you fell into the falls you might as well kiss ... read more

Since today would be the last day spent with Jon and Joyce we all decided to head to Banff for an afternoon of sightseeing and dinner. Banff is a gorgeous town with lots of character. I will let the pictures speak for themselves. It was a fun dinner talking about our adventures together, but we sure will miss Jon and Joyce. Had it not been for them none of us would have had this wonderful adventure of a life time. We can't thank them enough for showing us the way to Alaska. They are now heading down the road to do some other adventuring of their own. Travel safe our friends. See you back in good old San Antonio.... read more

So you want to be a Canadian?? A phrase that appears in books, T shirts and from many mouths here in town. But did we? After settling in to our new home on Muskrat st, meeting the other tenants and riding for a few weeks we were not so sure. Banff had become our "bubble" community. It is a transient place with Calgarians coming in for the weekends and young gap year students during the week. Prices are inflated and "touristy" doesnt come close! If you want a fossil of a megasaurus or a T shirt saying "I like big dumps" you have come to the right place. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the town, it has a restaurant and bar scene which can keep you occupied for a few weeks before you would need ... read more

So after going home and saying 'Hi!' for 2 weeks, we were off to the cold depths of Canada. Airtransat was our carrier and we were not expecting much, however we were pleasently suprised. Those extra leg room seats for £10 more were worth their weight in gold!. Our own screens and loads of room. Bargain at £250 each. A long flight later and we touched down in Calgary. It was all going so smoothly until we hit immigration. Question " how long you staying?"" 5 Months" we said. "Ummmmmm, thats a long time, are you going to be working?" "No, just snowboarding" " So how are you supporting this trip" "Savings". "Show me your bank accounts". Well it just got worse and worse. They ended up going out and speaking to Marks cousin, who was ... read more

On Thursday 18th October, I joined a 4 day tour to travel into the Rockie mountains. The tour left Vancouver and had stopovers in Kelowna, Banff, Jasper and then back to Banff for the final night. We left Vancouver with about 19 people and then finished in Banff with about 15 (no bear attacks, freezing to death etc. it was a hop on/hop off type tour and a few people left the tour along the way). Day 1 - Vancouver to Kelowna On Thursday morning I met the 19 people who would be my travelling companions for the next four nights. Leaving Vancouver we had our first stop about an hour and a half later at Bridal Veil Falls. A short walk got us to the base of the falls so named due to their likeliness ... read more

30th July ’12 Golden to Banff, Alberta OK so we thought we were getting up at 9 am but hadn’t counted on there being a time difference, so we were actually up at 10 am. There wasn’t as far to drive today though so it was fine. Our first stop today was to see the Spiral Tunnel, yes another one of those railway engineering feats up the side of a mountain. At the look-out point it took us a while to suss out it was actually on the other side of the valley, half way up the mountain. You could see an entrance and an exit tunnel but that was it, marginally better than the one in New Zealand but without the cute wire coat hanger model to look at this time! Maybe if a train ... read more
