Hello Everyone, Today is my last day in Banff. It is such a beautiful town, surrounded by mountains and so green. I arrived here on a Sunday morning. It was a drizzly day and the town was quiet, I wandered along Banff Ave and got to the Bow River which I followed until I reached the falls. They are very small, more like rapids now but they still sound impressive with the water roaring as it crashes around the rocks. The next morning I went on a tour to see some near by mountain lakes and some waterfalls. It was very cloudy and overcast in the morning, as we drove to Johnston Canyon the cloud cover made the mountains look like they had beards of clouds with their peaks pushing through the cloud layer. The canyon ... read more

Before we start with today’s stuff, here is one quick comment. Apparently the photos were longer than the text yesterday, so one picture got placed in the blog area called “additional photos”. If you want to see us with the Mountie, that’s where the picture is. Now, for the trivia buffs who are trying to figure out the Marilyn Monroe movie reference, the answer is “River of No Return”. And I think that completes the leftover items from yesterday. We slept in this morning because the whole day was up to us to decide what we wanted to do. So first on the agenda was arising at a leisurely hour. We then went down to the Bow River Grill in the hotel and had the buffet breakfast. They have a buffet area that rivals the buffet ... read more

Today the adventure really began. Our tour started today, after a very restful night’s sleep, with a great buffet breakfast. Omelets were the specialty of the day and we each had a custom-made breakfast with everything and anything we wanted. There was also a wide selection of other items to complete our plates, and we have a very good breakfast to start our day. The baggage was indeed collected from our room and was brought down to the lobby, and then was placed on our bus. There are 36 of us in the tour and the bus is large enough for 54, so we have lots of extra seats to be able to spread out and be fairly comfortable during the ride, which started with a drive through Calgary. It is a fairly modern city with ... read more

Geo: 51.1752, -115.573Long, long days up here in Alberta. We went to bed last night at 10 PM and it was still light out, somewhat. And this is the end of July. The days must be short in December. The word for the day is GLACIERS. And we saw LOTS of them today. We left the hotel this morning at 8:35 and 50 degrees (which bottomed out at 46 and a 20 MPH wind.) We did see 58 at times, but not often. The weather was mostly overcast with some rain. We spent a good deal of time in the clouds and , though I was hoping for the sun to shine on the mountains and have a nice blue sky backdrop for my photos, for the most part, it did not happen. However, it didn't ... read more

Geo: 51.1752, -115.573We climbed into the car this morning at 7:45 and 50 degrees, with partly sunny skies and headed for the border. As we drove north, we were surrounded by mountains on three sides, the east, the north and the west. The ridge on the east was couched in a purple haze, as the sun shone from behind and the one in the north had clouds hugging tightly along the peaks. And as we left Kalispel, we discovered that it had grown exponentially since our last visit two years ago. Urban sprawl…adding Costco, Walmart, Lowe's, and many other big box stores, The hotel manager told Steve that she could not compete with all of the new employers in town.We passed through Whitefish, a charming little town, and Eureka…neat and clean with weathered wooden facades inviting ... read more

We left Calgary this morning towards the Canadian Rockies. I was excited to see them and see if they are like I remember them from 1988, when I was here last. If anything, they are even more impressive! The drive from Calgary was easy, except for a little backed up traffic because of road works. What I didn't expect was toll booths on the Cross Canada Highway before Banff. Turns out they were for the Banff National Park. Just driving through is free, but if you want to enter the national park anywhere along the way, you need to purchase a pass. So we did, and it's good for tomorrow too. We drove on to Lake Minnewanka and entered the park. The road here makes a big loop with many stops on the way, where you ... read more

There are very few places in this world that I have difficulty describing in 500 words or less, but now that I've been to the massive Jasper/Banff park(s) in Alberta, I'm stumped. I have to say, for a park; a piece of outdoor nature, to draw my attention away from both my reading material and my thoughts is a sight to behold. Jasper (both the town and the park) and Banff (again, town and park) are absolutely amazing. I do not regret taking this detour through the Canadian Rockies at all. Having breakfast in a Elvis/Marilyn Munroe dinner can now be checked off my bucket list thanks to Edson, Alberta. It was a usual departure, tent being taken down and camper being readied for departure. At this point in the day, my expectations of Jasper was ... read more
