We got the overnight train to Ankara and I have to say Turkish Rail is very good. All the sleeper cabins were two berth and had a sink, and a fridge with free snacks. When we first got on the cabin was in seat configuration and then later the guard came in and changed our seats into beds. All very cool. I even managed to sleep! After breakfast in Ankara of the usual boiled egg, cucumber, tomato (they eat it at every meal), olives and bread we head to Atatürks mausoleum. Atatürk is considered to be responsible for making Turkey the liberal and secular country that it is today. This does tend to make him rather unpopular with some extremists but for the most part he is very well liked and there are statues of him ... read more

Fly back tomorrow morning and İ'm ready to stop travelling now but very apprehensive about returning to England. İ have NOTHİNG to return to and it certainly no longer feels like İ'm coming home as İ have no home to return to and no idea where İ'll be sleeping tomorrow night! İ think my time living in England is drawing to a close.. plenty of strong reasons. Difficult few days ahead yet again. İ've recovered from my illness and bought new clothes rather than take my falling apart jeans to the laundry. Along with miraculouslly finding my way through the mountains of Rila to the monestary and somehow cheating death. İ see with clarity now all the crap back "home" and who truly cares and is genuine. Wandered the Grand Bazarre today a ... read more

SBARCO IN ASIA..

We are ın Turkey! Managed to make ıt to Istanbul wıthout any problems. Were a bıt concerned when a Turkısh Aırlınes (who we flew wıth) plane got hıjacked the day before! Istanbul ıs a great cıty. It was a great flıght ın as we flew very low over the cıty so we could see all the mosques. As we drove from the aırport ınto the cıty ıt was gettıng dark so everythıng was lıt up. We went out for kebabs (or kebaps as they are called here) and baklava on our fırst nıght. It was washed down wıth some tea. Mum: ıt ıs not what you would call tea. “Inch Allah!” The words keep ringing in my ears. “God willing.” This popular phrase, often times heard all throughout the Arab World seems particularily ironic today. On this particular day, God does not seem willing to send me off on a good start!” After a very busy week, training in Istanbul and absorbing as much (admittedly a little too much) information as possible about my new company, I find myself on my way to my first assignment: Taiwan. Currently flying over India, I feel like every possible thing that could have gone wrong has gone wrong. To start things off, I was greeted with a nice 200 euro excess baggage surcharge at the Singapore Airlines Counter. Needless to say, I desperately tried to argue my way out of it, saying that I was a “preferred star ... read more

Got some mysterious illness now and İ'm just hanging round the hostel trying to recover. İt's probably a throat infection but İ also ache all over and have a fever and shivering and sweating. The people at this hostel have been really good looking after me. İ'm going to stay here until İ fly back on Tuesday there's still loads to see and do here in İstanbul and now İ'm back on my own İ can do the things İ want to. İ recommend this hostel Bahaus Hostel to anyone visiting İstanbul, there's a great sense of community here harking back to the sixties when this area was part of the trail to the East and İndia. The upper area has a bar and above that is a large roof terrace with views out ... read more

except for me In Istanbul now and I'm probably here till I fly to England although I'd rather be elsewhere. It's really hot here and resembles a large junk shop where everything is London prices. EVERYONE wants to know where we're from why? The blue mosque is super impressive and today we went inside another mosque which has been turned into a museum. It was alright is this the kind of insisive reportage you were expecting, Slater? The food here is good but overall I'm not really in the right mood to enjoy the place. I've met up with Sarah and we're hanging out and that's all good. ... read more

I haven't really had any plans for the past week so I thought I might use my internet time to open up a discussion on the finer points in life. Fortunately this part of the world is, or has been, replete with three of the four points of discussion. The fourth, work, is unfortunately a little scarce all over Turkey. In short, if you want to avoid it, come here. I left you guys in Trabzon with a bus ticket to Dogubeyazit burning a hole in my pocket. This is the most easterly town in Turkey & just a stone's throw from Iran. It's also deep inside Kurdistan, and the military checkpoint at 3am was the first of many. In short, Kurdistan doesn't exist. The Kurds are a formerly nomadic people who make up around 80% ... read more

Do I look a tad apprehensive? Or perhaps in need of a change of knickers? Suffice to say I was just about to have my first date with a cut-throat razor, wielded by a turkish barber, but much worse was yet to come....... Istanbul was our kinda place: cakes, çay (tea) cats, cinema and cracking fitbaw......throw in the ostentatious Blue Mosque, the eerie 5am Muezzin calls to prayer and the historic Aya Sofya and you've got a heady mix. Mind you, we weren't roy keane on the half-time break when watchin Miami Vice at the movies..... The Galatasaray fans certainly weren't shy when it came to supporting their team, but our 'Welcome to Hell' at the Ali Sami Yen stadium was filled with friendly banter and shared pistachio nuts. The mad chanting, bouncing and gesturing lasted ... read more

We're in a net cafe in the Antalya bus station... partially because we wanted to check our emails to make sure we still have flights home (we do!) and partially because we cant seem to leave the busstation or sit on the grass outside - both resulted in policemen firmly telling us (well communicating to us, as they didnt speak english) that what we were doing was wrong!! Have since figured out that we can leave out a different gate but lost the inclination to do so... Also trying to figure out why they bother metal-detecting us as we come through the doors but then letting us through despite having metal in our bags/on our persons!! Anyway... back to the point - letting you know where we're at and what we're up to right... Boat cruise ... read more
