Do you want the good news or the bad news first? Good? My rain gear works extremely well. The bad? You can guess. It has rained on three and a half of the five days I've been here. I should warn you that the photos won't be as stunning as they could be, as they are all shrouded by a layer of mist between subject and lens. Cities are hard to appreciate alone. By nature, a city is a place where many people pack into a small space, thereby deriving benefits from cooperation and sharing of public works, resources, etc. But to an outsider in a strange city, the entire experience can seem a bit flat, like watching a hive of bees, which has many complex behavious, but which seems, to the uneducated eye, like so ... read more

Well, after a summer in New York, I am finally starting on the second leg of my big trip. I touched down in Istanbul yesterday morning, and I plan to do a tour of the countries of the Middle East deemed safe enough to visit. I awoke this morning, my first here in Istanbul, to the swirling, undulating chants blaring from loudspeakers in the Blue Mosque near my hotel, the sound vying with the clamorous slap and swoosh of the wind and rain that has been flogging this ancient city since last night. OK, to be honest, it didn't wake me up. Jet lag woke me up at 5:00 AM, but I can't really complain about that, as I slept for a solid five hours last night, which is better sleep than I've had at ... read more

I am LOVING Istanbul! This is a fantastic city with a great vibe. I've been here for 6 days and feel I've only scratched the surface. People have been really friendly, and the shop owners don't hassle you at all. The day I arrived was in the middle of a 3-day holiday to celebrate the end of Ramazan (fasting period). Every one of the 12+ million people that live here were out and about. Madness and mayhem everywhere. Cuisine is yummy too. Loving the turkish delight, baklava, kebabs and apple tea. Nothing like going through the Spice Bazaar, and local markets or shops and filling up on taste testers. Have spent my days doing the usual touristy sites. Then been checking out the Taksim nightlife. Fabbo little bars and clubs on every floor of most buildings ... read more

We are back in Istanbul and the holiday is nearly over :-( Can't believe it as it has gone so fast. We fly back to the UK tomorrow. We went to Gallipoli on Friday on the way back to Istanbul. we got the 7am ferry to the Gallipoli peninsula so we were there very early as the sun was rising. It was very peaceful. We started at ANZAC cove where the allied troops landed on the 25th April (ANZAC day) 1915. When you see how steep the cliffs are you realise why they never really had a chance. Thousands of people died. There are several graveyards for both allied and Turkish troops. We went to Lone Pine which is one of the most famous and is a memorial to the Australian soldiers who died. It is ... read more

I have just spent the last 2 weeks touring Turkey with Laura. As she likes to always be on the move we went all over. We started in Istanbul which is a great city with lots to see. Unfortunately there is no photo as Laura was so busy sight seeing she forgot to take my photo! After that we headed East to Cappadocia which is home to lots of groovy rock formations. It is a really interesting place to visit and was my favourite place in Turkey. After that we headed south via Konya, a very conservative town which is famous for Mevlana the guy who is the founder of the Whirling Dervish sect. We got the chance to see the Dervishes whirl elsewhere in Turkey. It was a little strange but good. Once we were ... read more
