I woke early to try and get on the road to catch Spider. I sent him an email with the story. With a hand-drawn map of how to get to Adana I set off for Nidge. I rode along the realtively flat ground making good time. But at the same time I was racked with thoughts of where the hell Spider was, how did we loose each other, and how hard had we stuffed up to get in this position so early in the game. My words of a few days ago echoed in my head 'if we can get the first few days through with plain sailing we'll be laughing' well things dont always work out the way one hopes. After a long day of riding and thinikng each sign post, tree, barrell, turkish person ... read more

I woke early with one thing in mind. To find the freak. I sent a quick email to him, telling him what my story was. Armed with a hand-drawn map of how to get to Adana I said goodbye to my new best friends and headed into the fray. The terrain was pretty easy going but I was racked with terrible thoughts of what could have happened to Spider. I was also pissed at the apparent communication breakdown and that we had stuffed up so hard, so early on. My words of a few days earlier were ecohing in my head 'it would be sweet if the first few days are fair sailing, that would be a great start to the ride'. I punched out about 40km's and after thinking every distant sign post or human ... read more

We woke early to a great little day. The sun was out, we werent too spanked from yesterday and had had a good sleep. The morning ride greeted us with a smashing 5km or so downhill run. We belted down it with the mountain on our left coming out to play in the sun, and stretching ahead and below us vast fertile plains. The bike and trailer worked really well on the downhill run, wıth both rolling together as one unit. I was pretty happy with this as it was the first time id got any kind of pace up on the bike with the trailer attached. we scooted onto the plains and started to make some good headway. But here i'm sad to say it all gets a little bit murky. Spider rode off ahead ... read more

Having been in Istanbul for a week, we needed a break. It wasn't a break from Istanbul that we needed so much as a break from cities in general. So we marched down to the travel agency near our hotel and told him to send us away. Where to? Cappadocia. He had a two day tour with a night in a cave hotel he could offer, so we figured we might as well. The only hang-up was that for what we were wanting to pay, he could only do bus tickets instead of a flight. Julie and I both hated the idea of 12 hour overnight bus rides, but thriftiness prevailed, and we accepted. Actually, the bus ride was much better than we expected, and we both slept a fair amount. When we got to Urgup, ... read more

It well and truly begins here. While i am writing this about three weeks after it happened (im not a very dedicated blogger at the moment), our arrival in Goreme in central Turkey marked the start of our bike ride. We collected our mound of stuff from the bus and were greated by a bloke from a local pansyion. Being laden with a large amount of stuff we accepted an offer for a ride to his place. Here, in the shadow of the famous fairy chimneys we reassembled our bikes and began preparations for the ride. Later that night we met up with some friends i was chilling with in southern turkey. Zac, Julie, and Pam. We went and hung out at Zac's place, played pishlie (a turkish cardgame which along with backgammon is a national ... read more

Before coming to Turkey, it never dawned on me how important a carpet or rug could be to someone. I mean, most people have one or more throughout the home, but it's honestly not something I've personally ever been passionate about. I could compare it to walking down the street and every third shop a guy sticking his head out the door soliciting you to come in and look at his lamps for sale. Again, I see the usefulness, but the passion for the subject would escape me. Anyway, I now see the light. That is, I've spent enough time walking the streets of Istanbul to be solicited by quite a few dealers desperate to show me their carpets. Most of these people are just your average joe doing your average job. A few are downright ... read more

Leaving Konya was as painful as getting in. I was determined to use that tram to get out of town but finding it took a long time even though it was only a few minutes walk away. I was told by the hotel guy that I had to take bus so I went to the bus stop in front of the hotel and tried to ask someone but no one could speak english or understand my broken turk, until one man laughed at me and told me to walk before taking off (but not saying in which direction). Trying again to snatch information from these overly nice turks I ended up finding the 2 women from the hotel (those who mistook me for a turk) who showed me the way. I was just 2 minutes away ... read more

A quick summary of how we got here: We left Athens on the 5th for Thessaloniki. We went by train through central Greece, weaving through the countryside past all sorts of beautiful scenery. Julıe wasn't feeling very well though, and the train ride only made it worse. As for Thessaloniki, it's actually a very nice place. I do regret we didn't see as much of it as either one of us would have liked, but it was a good time. We did a lot of walking around town and visited the local Byzantine museum. The White Tower, the famous landmark of the city, didn't seem to be open when we were there, so we couldn't go in. The food was nowhere near as good as in Athens though. We had a partıcularly bad outing at one ... read more

The overnight bus from Istanbul was smooth sailing. I had heard of the good reputation of turkish bus companies and they certainly lived up to my expectations. Quality buses, no hassle. I'd even say they're a bit boring. Anyway, I got in Selcuk in early morning and quickly found my way to an ANZ hostel, the first one I stumbled upon. I got a dorm bed for a good price after only a little bargaining and even had a good breakfast. I chatted it up with a retired canadian couple backpacking around who were so friendly and interesting. The man was a career officier and had been stationed in Pakistan before Independance, he had crazy story to tell about those weekends he used to spend in Kandahar and Kabul and the stuff he found in the ... read more
