We decided to set off for a walk round the harbour and towards the shipyards. Although in the 20’s the wind was pretty blustery and the waves smashing off the rocks and the sea wall were fabulous. Alanya has two lighthouses to guard the harbour; both are a short walk from the front. Woolly Says – I loved the big lighthouse; can I be a lighthouse keeper please? Jumping through the spray and dodging the waves was amazing fun, we arrived at the larger of the two lighthouses which you can climb up when open. It gives an excellent view of the bay of Alanya and shows clearly the development that is making this a top destination. Woolly says – I got wet in the waves, Jo told me off, but it was such good fun ... read more

We made it…….. leaving the UK in a snowy blizzard we boarded our flight and spent 4hours and 20 minutes with our knees up by our chins – being only 5 foot and a bit (the bit is important), even I was cramped! Coming into land at Antalya airport brought warmth to our bones and as we made our way down the coast to Alanya it was wonderful to see the sea and the developing area that we were approaching. When books are written it is not all towns that can brag of having pirates, queens and great war lords as main characters – Alanya can! In its early years Alanya was a small town discovered by pirates where the inhabitants existed mainly by farming and trading. The town, which at that time was named Coracesium, ... read more

The goal today was to finally swim in the Mediterranean Sea. It seemed like a simple and attainable goal, but in the end required some patience and perseverance. We left the pier and quickly got lost. We grew discouraged walking in the intense heat - trying to make our way through town and over the steep peninsula to reach the beach and Damlatas caves waiting for us on the other side. A taxi driver stopped and offered to take us for a ride (pun intended) and I agreed to his first price of 5 euros instead of bargaining. He drove us a short distance down the hill and in a minute or less we were there. Kleopatra Beach was quite crowded but we made the best of it and took in the beauty of the deep ... read more

Nonniin.

Our 12 hour bus ride to Anamur was a beautiful and scenic coastal road along the Mediterranean. We arrived in Anamur around noon and took a city bus full of smoking teenagers in school uniforms loving Tages's lip ring to Iskele where our hostel was located. We made it to Esyr's Pansyon where we met the cranky owner Mr Esyr. We told him we would like to stay for a week and he thought we were lying so he told us if we didn't stay a week it would be very dishonest of us and hurt his business. Tages had to shake his hand and give him her word that we would stay. He also told us we couldn't use the kitchen because he thought we would make a mess but I almost started to cry ... read more

5/21/08 7:40 came really early this morning only to get on a bus for 5 hours. Kitalah is the town where we stopped to stay the night on our way to Antalyia. Lets just say that the hotel we stayed in reminded me of a 1 star hotel that one might find in Mexico. Each wall was painted a bright color, we had 3 single beds pushed together on a king-size headboard, and the bathroom floors were DIRTY. Did I mention that there was NO AIRCONDITIONING!!! The weather is cool at night, but I was looking forward to sleeping in a hotel with air-conditioning. SO after another not so fine Turkish buffet full of cheese, meatballs, cucumber and tomatoes all I wanted was a hot shower. On the wall in the shower there was a sign ... read more

After another day lazing on the beach we decided it was time to go and explore again. We chose Alanya as it was reputed to have a castle and good snorkelling. We jumped on the Dolmus bus outside our hotel and travelled to Manavgat where we needed to change buses to Alanya. We found the correct bus no problem and got on. We were extremely surprised to find that this bus was air-conditioned and quite plush, a big bonus! The ride took us all along the coast line for about 60 kms and lasted about one hour 20 minutes, very good value for 6 lire ( about £2 in our money)! The bay of Alanya was very picturesque, a pretty Port backed by high mountains and a castle overlooking the town. After grabbing a quick coffee ... read more
