With the year coming to an end, over 20,000 miles travelled, 21 countries and principalities visited, 132 Blogs published and over 3000 pictures taken we asked the International Mammoth of mystery for some of his views on his adventures in 2013 ….. What has been the most inspiring place you have visited this year? Well, that’s an easy question to start, let’s hope the other questions are better! It would have to be Mount Nemrut 809520, the location was incredible and to see what they had built on the top was amazing and truly inspiring to a Mammoth of my size. In my (not so) humble opinion, truly the eighth wonder of the world. You have quite a few outfits, which has been your favourite one for the year? A few outfits….are you kidding? My wardrobe ... read more

Woolly says – what a super Christmas I had, lots of pressies for me, so I must have been a very good Mammoth this year. I really loved my JCB from my bestest friend Sion and I spent the afternoon playing with it and my mini Ferrari, I’m not sure that daughter Zoe liked it when I kept driving into her leg hehe. The time in Aberystwyth passed very quickly and with the wind whipping around us we had a tearful goodbye before Ollie took to the road for his last journey before retirement. With only 193 miles to go we spent the journey reminiscing on Ollie’s 20,000 miles with us and watching the Welsh mountains going past, glorious scenery with white blobs of sheep carpeting the landscape. Woolly says – Jo was so transfixed by ... read more

Woolly says – The days pass so pleasantly here, sitting on the balcony watching the huge cruise liners arriving in the harbour and all those lucky people getting to sample the wonderful resort of Alanya. Jo and Ian have finished painting the apartment ready for next year’s visitors, I have of course helped by directing operations and telling them where spots have been missed, not that they thank me for this. Woolly is as helpful as a chocolate fire guard and keeping his paws out of the paint has been more of a challenge than actually painting every wall in sight. Having realised that I was still missing my thick waterproof winter coat we took a day off from the emulsion and headed to our friends in the hills behind Mahmultar to rummage through the garage ... read more

Having discarded our paint brushes and given into Woolly’s nagging we made good our promise to take him to Alanya Museum to see what had been excavated from Syedra and other ancient cities from around the area. Woolly says – About time to, I’ve had to wait over a week! I was up and ready for action by 7.30am, the lazy bones were eventually ready by 11am (I’m recommending early nights for the pair of them!) The twenty minute walk to Cleopatra Beach in the sunshine was most agreeable and we took a few minutes rest on one of the funky ship benches to watch the many people using the outside gym. These gyms run all along the sea front and are constantly in use, keep fit in the sun, not a bad idea. Woolly says ... read more

Woolly says – I could feel the excitement building as we approached the fifth of November. Not because of any plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament or because the nation wants to scare the animal population of the UK with loud bangs and pops but because it is the most important day of the year – MY BIRTHDAY! Having high expectations for his special day Woolly made short work of opening his presents and eating a huge slice of cake. Woolly says – No Ferrari, no yacht, no private jet……. I got clothes! CLOTHES!! What’s going on?? Okay the cake was yummy but it took me an hour to get the chocolate off my tusks! Finally we were able to load him into Ollie for his day out to celebrate. The plan – Find ... read more

Woolly says – we needed to stock up on food and snacks, a trip to Migros (one of the Turkish supermarkets that sell alcohol!) was on the cards. I thought that was it for the day but Jo and Ian had other ideas and took me on a detour to Green Canyon. Green Canyon is a huge tourist attraction and all the tour operators offer this trip, the pictures looked impressive and with the fifth highest Dam in Turkey there was no stopping us. Woolly says – we disappeared down the same back roads as a couple of days ago and kept going. We knew we were going in the right direction as we started to meet up with a range of different tours and jeep trips who were happily bouncing all over the roads spraying ... read more

With the sun shining brightly and the waves caressing the sand we started Monday with a short trot up the beach to get internet and Skype Birthday Daughter Zoe. We flashed the sunny view at her but for some reason she didn’t seem impressed! Woolly says – I did ask her what the weather was like in Aberystwyth but apparently she hadn’t opened her curtains yet, lazy girl I’ve been up for hours…..apparently! Heading back to camp we collected Ollie from his slumbers under the tree and set off down the D400 whilst looking for the signposts for Alara. We seem to have lost James our sat nav and it seemed very quiet without his Auzzie twang to lead the way. We need to look into the sat nav situation but todays jaunt was easy to ... read more

Woolly says – I’m really enjoying camping on the beach, the nights are a bit chilly but it is lovely and peaceful. We have just under a week before we can move back to our temporary accommodation (still waiting for news on our permanent apartment!) and rather than move further down the coast towards Alanya we thought we would take the opportunity of exploring some of the sights that are closer to Antalya itself. With that in mind and a picnic packed we set off in Ollie for a new adventure. Woolly says – with only twenty kilometres to go we glanced at the town of Manavgat as we drove through, quite pretty with palms trees and streams flowing down the central reservation, lots of traffic though. Ollie was soon on the smaller roads and pounding ... read more

Our trip covering some of the East of Turkey has bought quite a few surprises not to mention some incredible sights, Woolly thought it would be a good idea to do a summary of the trip and we agreed thinking it might keep him quiet for a few days! Woolly says – So cutting! The East was very different and gave us a variety of problems and some wonderful destinations Camping proved to be problematic with many campsites not existing and I would certainly recommend contacting camps by email before planning to stay at them. Prices are cheap ranging between 25TL and 40TL (approximately £8.10 and £12.90 GBP) in comparison to European sites but be prepared for very basic facilities with only a few camps having washing up areas at all. Several we stayed on where ... read more

The sun continues to shine, rain however has arrived and Woolly and I had a lovely hour watching the waiters pulling in chairs and tables with the rain bouncing off the pavement and developing rivers into the bar areas. Half an hour later and everything was back outside with the water disappearing under the bright sunlight again. The showers never last long…… Woolly says – the rain is even warm and if I was the type that wanted to shower I would have only needed some soap! The most exciting part of the week was being able to see our belongings again! Having waved them goodbye on 24th July I was so happy to greet them on Turkish soil. We had been told that they would arrive sometime next week but then Jo received an email ... read more
