Oh, wow! Today Ernest and I had our first hot air balloon ride, and what a ride it was! We had to get up at 5:00 am and it was cold, but once we got to the launch site, it was worth it. There are several balloon ride companies but we were booked with the oldest one, Kappadokya Air, and we had the pilot trainer as our pilot. Getting in the basket was a little difficult for Ernest and I but the crew was great and lifted E up and helped me swing my big rear over. The hot gas warmed us up so the trip was very comfortable. We rode up and down the Cappadocia valley. The rock formations here from the volcanic ash are so unique it is a World UNESCO site. The pictures ... read more

After a not very rejuvenating nap, we headed up to thescooter rental shop. It was surprisinglycheap to rent one(35TL-about $22 for 6 hours+gas). Mom decided to drive because my drivingrecord isn’t the best this year, and one more accident would probably be theend of my driving for a while. There is... read more

Cappadochia is one of those places in the world that has you going "Wow" everywhere you look. The scenery is stunning and the addition of the balloons in the sky for the morning is great. As we said earlier we had to wait an extra day to get a booking and there was the possibility that our flight may be cancelled due to thunder storms looming. Having been on the flight now I see why the weather is such an important factor as you truely are at the mercy of the wind. We were picked up at 05:30 for our flight and taken to Kapadokia Balloons office where there was about 60 people waiting to fly. Graham our pilot was from England and flies n Cappadochia for 6 months of the year and then in the ... read more

Wednesday 21st Sept - Scooter Safari Breakfast at the hotel again this morning. I was up at about 8am and managed to see a late traveling hot air balloon floating over Goreme. Such a cool sight! I asked Zak if he wanted to go up in a balloon but he declined saying it was too expensive. It is pretty expensive, but at 120 euros it's actually cheaper than what we paid 6 years ago to do it. I think that is because competition has stepped up, when we went last time there were about 6 balloons all up, now there are 118 that go up daily! Unreal! Not a bad rate of growth over just a few years. Anyway, I think we could have stretched the budget to cover the flight, but perhaps Zak is still ... read more

Today was a day of making bus connections. To get to Goreme we had to travel via Kayseri a six hour trip 35 Turkish Lira each, about 21 NZ dollars then a connection to Goreme that took about an hour. Arrived in at about 6.30 pm and picked the closest accommodtion, Walnut House, it turned out to be a good choice Only just off the square where all the transport is and also close to the Hot Air Balloon companies The staff at Walnut House were very helpful, our room was a deluxe room ( NZ $45 )and even though it wasn't in a cave as some are in Goreme, the walls were made of carved local stone. The room hade a huge bed and the floor was covered in Turkish carpets and cushions. Filled in ... read more

Sunday 18th Sept - Ankara to Goreme, Cappadocia After breakfast and thanks & farewell to our hosts, we caught a taxi to the nearest metro station and caught a metro that took us to the bus station. Naively, we arrived at the bus station at 5 minutes before 11 thinking we would be able to get tickets on the 11am bus out of Ankara to Cappadocia. It's Sunday morning and as soon as I saw the amount of people crowding the bus terminal I realized that we were pretty stupid thinking we would get a on the bus we wanted without having pre-purchased tickets. There were just 2 different bus companies that were going directly to Goreme, but of course now it was just minutes, even seconds, before 11 and I was not surprised when both ... read more

Ok, so Goreme is totally wacky. I hope you can get a feeling for this by perusing the photos that I have attached. And this is completely a good wacky. What an awesome place. I had seen some photos of the rock formations around here before I came, but there is no substitute for the real thing. They are crazy. Honestly I feel like I am walking through a Dr. Seuss book or something like this. As the minibus rides into Goreme (I had to switch from a bus to a minibus in Nevsehir) you wind between some rock structures that are illuminated with artificial lighting. A nice entrée into the sights of Goreme. I arrived late at night (11:30pm) but was able to make it to my pension with the help of some friendly locals. ... read more

Wow, what a day! It started early - we had to rise at about 4:40am to be ready for our 5am pick-up. There were many different minivans picking up people from the hotel. Ours were Butterfly Balloons. First, they took us just down the road to their offices, where we had some breakfast and where allocated to our pilots (they have three ballons). We were to fly with Captain Mike, and English man who's been flying balloons in Cappadocia for the last twelve years. We then got onto minibuses - one for each balloon - the sign on ours said Grandpa Mike. We drove out of Goreme to the launch site. Along the way we saw many other balloons being inflated and taking off. Our launch site was a little further away, but Mike had been ... read more

Hey Everyone, It's been a while. Time for us to send a massive update (and now that Ev and I are here together with a computer the updates should come more frequently). I met Ev at the Istanbul airport, where we both hopped on the same flight to Izmir. It was great to see him again (though we had a bit of a scare because we couldn't find each other in the airport and ended up reuniting in the aisle on the plane... not exactly the best place for smooching). After the flight we got on a train, met Onur at the other end, then took a dolmush (van/bus) and a taxi to arrive at the summer house in Chandarli. Laurren had been cooking up a storm while we were on our way so we were ... read more

Well after a quick and quiet overnight in Antalya it was back to Cappadocia where we first started our Turkey adventure. This was good as we were not in Cappadocia very long the first time and did not get to enjoy the wonderful sights and experiences it had to offer. As some background, Cappadocia is famed for its underground cities (created by the early christians when escaping Roman persecution), houses carved into rock, fairy chimnies (wierd rock formations created by the elements), and pottery. We were somewhat excited about returning, mainly because we knew we had three nights in one location, which is always welcome, and also because we knew we were staying in a very nice hotel with great food. Also the temperature does drop to the low twenties which was also welcome. Upon arriving ... read more
