When we went walking around the town of Goreme, we were intrigued to see the variety of cave houses, many of them amalgams of both human and fairy work. We were also impressed with the prevalence of solar hot water heating (we were told electricity is very expensive here) and the town was like time travel all in one place, with caves/cars/satellite dishes/hot air balloons/giant Mercedes tour buses/solar panels/restaurants/ATMs and people from all over the world. Cappadocia is the second most visited place in Turkey, after Istanbul. On our second day in Goreme we took the "Red Tour", which loops to the north. First we visited an abandoned Greek cave town. In the 1920s, Turkey experienced (sanctioned/endured) a massive population exchange. People of Greek culture were expelled to Greece and the Turks in Greece were returned ... read more

So the story paused with us being ushered into a travel agency by Not-a-Guide. We had thought that Istanbul was a big enough place for us to explore for the two weeks we would be in Turkey, and that during that time I might drop my resume off at an ESL site or two. But the persuasive travel agent had much bigger plans for us. Upon finding how many days there were till our flight to London, he drew up an ambitious itinerary which included our major interest--Ephesus--and many other attractions as well. He decided that with our limited time we should fly hither and yon, first inland to Cappadocia and then to Kusadasi on the Mediterranean coast. No time for 10 hour overnight bus rides. (Thank goodness for that!) We had the presence of mind ... read more

Day 16: We got picked up and shipped off to our hotel in Goreme. It is called the Shoestring Cave Hotel, one of many cave hotels in the area. We had to wait until about 1030 to receive our room which is as stated, in a cave. Naturally, after another 10 hour bus ride, we took a 3 hour nap when we got our room. Here are some facts regarding caves, the positive thing about sleeping in a cave is you never get too hot. The bad thing, the cave is very humid and without a dehumidifier things get very damp. We have started to store our clothes in plastic bags to keep them relatively dry. When we awoke we decided to venture around the town and see what it had to offer. We stopped at ... read more

Day 15 and 16: Today started out really nice because we didn't have to check out of our hotel until 11 am. Once checked out we left our stuff at the hotel and proceeded to wander around Pamukkale. When we were swimming yesterday we ran into a couple from San Fransisco, one of which was a grade 4 teacher. His two main recommendations were to go to a Haman (Turkish Bath) because your skin comes out soft and youthful looking; I guess a little youth never hurt anyone. His second recommendation was to get a straight razor shave. My face lit up like a Christmas tree, are you telling me that I can get rid of the beard and not have to shave for only $5. I'm sold. Terri and I eventually found a barber and ... read more

We got off the aırplane at about 2am and checked out of taxı optıons. Nothıng unless you want to pay a hundred bucks. We decıded to sleep ınstead ın the aırport and then fınd transportatıon ın the mornıng. We spent the nıght on the metal benches ın the departures check-ın area. It was uncomfortable but we have both slept ın worse places. In the mornıng I wandered upstaırs to fınd tea and dıscovered large comfortable couches ın the small cafe. I could have crıed. We crashed up there for another hour and at about 7am we took off. We pıcked up a woman named Betty who was supposed to have been pıcked up by her hotel but never got her rıde. We took a cab to the bus statıon and a bus an hour over to ... read more

From the Mediterranean we took a nıght bus to Göreme, ın central Turkey. Somehow Göreme remınds me of somethıng, although ıt ıs famous for beıng a unıque locatıon on the planet. As we fırst pulled ınto town, I was remınded of West Yellowstone, Montana: a very small town centered around tourısts who have come to experıence a natural wonder. Dan saıd that he thought that the landscape around Göreme was sımılar to that of Utah. There are many strange arches, 'faıry chımneys' (tall columns), and other rock formatıons that have been formed by errosıon. Some are whıte, some are pınk, and some have a dıstınct lıne where the swıtch from pınk to whıte. But unlıke Utah, these rock formatıons were home to a gıant monestary complex 1,000 years ago. Everywhere you look ın the rocks are ... read more

Day 11 Cappadocia We have a smooth landing into a tiny little airport when we arrive in the Cappadocia region. It seems like the entire staff of the airport comes out to the tarmac to watch our arrival. I am guessing they do not see very many private jets come in and out of this airport. In fact, our airplane is the only one in the entire airport. I bid the other passengers goodbye for now. A short time later we load into a small shuttle bus and head out to our hotel. Some of the streets are well paved and others leave a lot to be desired but the landscape of the mountains is amazing. We can see why this place might be a popular destination. We arrive at the hotel and initially think we ... read more

I got up at 5 am to see if I could catch a glimpse of the wonder that I was told the hot air balloons would be. Sadly, I got up too early to catch them and in my early morning sleepy state I didn’t realize it. I went back to bed then got up a little later to make it down for breakfast (more yogurt please!). Today was a relaxing day with nothing on the agenda, Fatih had mentioned that we could visit a nice Hamam here and after a little exploring the group decided that would be a great idea! Marcus kept asking me what I wanted for my birthday so once I realized that we would be going I told him I wanted my stay at the Hamam for my birthday! (That ... read more

We got up and ate breakfast (yogurt, finally!!!) and were ready to go exploring around Cappadocia. Dora said at breakfast that she got up early and was amazing by how many hot air balloons there were in the sky! She was so impressed by it that she is going up in one the next morning. I asked what time they were going out so that I would get up the next morning to see them since she talked about it so fondly. We were soon all together and on the bus to go to the underground cities that the Cappadocians dug out of the soft rock. (We all have asked a dumb question at one time or another, and Dora took the day’s prize for asking if the Cappadocians dug the underground cities, this was just ... read more

It was an early morning with a long bus ride to Cappadocia, and we all were feeling it. (All but Taylee, who was a smart cookie for going to bed early.) We all ate breakfast in silence for the most part, and then hopped on the bus. It was the first of 2 long bus rides for us, the second one being the ride from Cappadocia to Istanbul. We didn’t stop much on the way since we had to make good time; we did stop for lunch at one point but we all weren’t hungry so a few of us decided to go exploring in this cave that was right next to the restaurant. It was a very Turkish experience. The cave was almost entirely horizontal and had a giant pool at the end of it, ... read more
