Day 16: We got picked up and shipped off to our hotel in Goreme. It is called the Shoestring Cave Hotel, one of many cave hotels in the area. We had to wait until about 1030 to receive our room which is as stated, in a cave. Naturally, after another 10 hour bus ride, we took a 3 hour nap when we got our room. Here are some facts regarding caves, the positive thing about sleeping in a cave is you never get too hot. The bad thing, the cave is very humid and without a dehumidifier things get very damp. We have started to store our clothes in plastic bags to keep them relatively dry. When we awoke we decided to venture around the town and see what it had to offer. We stopped at ... read more

Day 15 and 16: Today started out really nice because we didn't have to check out of our hotel until 11 am. Once checked out we left our stuff at the hotel and proceeded to wander around Pamukkale. When we were swimming yesterday we ran into a couple from San Fransisco, one of which was a grade 4 teacher. His two main recommendations were to go to a Haman (Turkish Bath) because your skin comes out soft and youthful looking; I guess a little youth never hurt anyone. His second recommendation was to get a straight razor shave. My face lit up like a Christmas tree, are you telling me that I can get rid of the beard and not have to shave for only $5. I'm sold. Terri and I eventually found a barber and ... read more

Day 14: Today we got up in the morning and hopped on a bus bound for Pamukkale. The word Pamukkale means cotton castle and is so coined due to the cotton appearance of the bleached limestone. Since we were staying in Hieropolis ("holy city"), also known as Pamukkale, our tour guide informed us we could wander at our own pace because we didn't have to catch the bus back to Selcuk. Naturally it wasn't the ruins that interested us at this point; but, the copious amounts of limestone that naturally deposited out of the thermal springs. When we first arrived at the site of Pamukkale our guide informed us that we were lucky because there was water. I was a little confused at first until I realized that this place is run strictly by tourism and ... read more

Day 13: Today we were off to see the ruins that lie in Priene, Miletus, and Didyma. Before you read the little bit of history I can offer I would like to inform you that it was so ridiculously hot that I wasn't really listening to the little guide but was instead more focused on finding what little shade there was. If I miss some information and you would like to know a little more once again you can do a little research on your own. Priene was our first stop. Strategically, this was one of the most fortified sites used to fend of the Persians around 350 BC. The entire town was designed to face the south so it received more sun in the winter time and less sun during the summer months. To the ... read more

Day 12: Today was a day of relaxation. We got up and went for a little boat ride; I like boats. We had a minor setback where the tour voucher was left in the hotel room; but, that was easily fixed by our tour company vouching for us at the docks. When we first got on the boat we didn't know what to expect because our original tour to Paragum was cancelled and this trip to Samos was our replacement option. It was about an hour before the boat left port and Terri and I both had no trouble drifting off into our little dream worlds while waiting for the boat to begin moving. Once the boat was underway I decided to go up and order some tea. What I haven't mentioned is that we are ... read more

Day 11: Upon disembarking from the bus in Selcuk we were escorted to our hotel. It was too early to check in so we left the bags behind the reception and sat and waited for our 0930 tour; that's right, no rest for the wicked. While we waited we met a brother and sister from Australia who were going on the same tour as us. After the bus ride, where no one spoke a word of English, it was nice to be able to meet new people without the problem of a language barrier. We introduced ourselves to Matt and Amanda and got to know each other for an hour and a half. The tour bus eventually showed up and we were on our way to Ephesus. The first thing you notice as you enter Ephesus ... read more

Day 10: Our last day in Istanbul. Today we didn't receive our laundry until 9 am. This caused a few stressors since we had to be showered and packed by 10 am to avoid paying another night. Since we were in such a rush a few things got left behind. My cheap little alarm clock and unfortunately Momma Bear's Ipod. On top of that it cost us 80 TL ($48) to do our laundry. It was not the best start to the day; needless to say we will be doing our own laundry from now on. We loaded up our 50 lb bags and all of our purchases, (Yes Kim; presents!) and proceeded to walk up the hill hoping to catch a taxi on the way. No such luck. So we both managed to haul our ... read more

Day 9 Part II: Now you get to hear about Ayasophia! Once again there were people lined up to get in. Once again we had a little man walk up to us and ask for 40 TL if he could be our guide and once again all it took was the magic statement; "you don't have to stand in line." We were in like flint. There were three Ayasophia’s (Hagia Sophia) built throughout the years at that particular location. The first two locations were burned down by rioters and the current one was completed in 537 A.D. The building is mostly original with the exception of a few changes. Earthquakes eventually caused the collapse of the dome. When the dome was reconstructed they couldn’t replicate a semi-circular dome of the same size so as a result ... read more

Day 9: It has finally arrived, the day you have all been waiting for, the day we visited the infamous Blue Mosque and Ayasophia of Istanbul. Now it has only taken two highly educated individuals nine days, but we finally figured out the shortest route with a smaller grade of hill that takes us to the metro. This is only because we decided to walk to Sultanahmet region today. It was 0900 hrs and the heat was already making its presence felt. As we walked through the entrance of the Blue Mosque we realized that it is the only mosque in Istanbul with six minarets. For those unfamiliar with what a minuet is, it is the the pointed towers that you see surrounding the mosques in the pictures we have taken. They are where the calls ... read more

Day 8: Today we woke up rediculously early, the alarm went off at 515am. It is a good thing too because our little tour guide arrived half an hour early. Five and a half hours later we arrived at our destination. It took us a minute to realize that we had travelled all the way down the Turkish penninsula to where the Darnadelle straight and the Agean sea meet. We then caught a ferry and headed over to Asia minor to visit Troy. There are a few different versions of the legend of the Trojan horse. One of the more popular ones being that the Trojans kidnapped Helena and the Greeks began a campaign against Troy in an effort to get her back. After perilous years of fighting with no success in breaching the Trojan defences ... read more
