Cappadocia is known as the land of the fairy chimneys, but one of our first introductions to these chimneys in the very appropriately named 'Love Valley' made us think that it looks more like the land of phalic statues! It is like some crazy cult has carved big statues of a feritility god. However nature created the surreal lunar landscape, when 30 million years ago erupting volcanoes covered the region with volcanic ash. Volcanic rock then covered the ash and solidified into what is known as tuff (soft rock like substance). The peaks and canyons were formed by erosion from water and wind that wore grooves into the tuff. Due to the ease of carving into the tuff, many of the fairy chimneys and surrounding mountains were used for houses and churches. Dwellings were also created ... read more

What a little day. Nessie and I took a tour with a tour agency called Yama tours so that we could explore the Illahra Valley. We customed designed part of the tour so that we could get to hike the whole valley insted of the 3 km that you do with the group. Our guide packed our lunch so that we could take it with us. I think we ended up hiking a total of about 12 km. We were both exhausted by the end of the day and I am not ridiculously sunburnt. I was wearing 30 but managed to completely miss my traps which are now as red as a cooked lobster. Nessie with her glowing olive Italian skin is obviously fine... I will be wearing a parka for the next couple of days ... read more

Yes we left the beautiful Mediterranean coast for snow? What the hell? Got off our bus to a snowstorm! It was 25 degrees Celsius 2 days ago? WTF? Oh well we soon warmed up in our hotel which turned out to be a cave carved into one of the huge chimney looking things from the Flintstones! Actually quite warm inside out of the snow! Next day we jumped on a tour as some of the stuff to see was further away then expected. Had great views of the Goreme Valley before we hit up the Underground City. Little known but there are 20 floors dug straight down into the ground and could house up to 30 000 people in times of war! Went on to Ihlara Valley for a hike where we saw a sheep charge ... read more

How does one prepare herself for Cappadocia? On our way to Goreme, we stopped by some souvenir shops and restaurants where posters and postcards of the rock chapels and fairy chimneys introduced us to this surreal landscape of capped pinnacles in warm reds and golden browns. Four hours across the Konya plain, passing the long Hasan mountain range, until we made another stop for what was more than just another glass of warm apple tea. We visited Marco Polo's pit stop along the Silk Road. The caravanserai at Sultanhani was built in the 13th century and is easily one of the grandest in Turkey. There was a separate hall where the animals were kept and sleeping quarters for the caravan. The way it was structured, arches and all, I would have thought there was a cathedral ... read more

Geo: 39.9439, 32.856Alex: We went to the underground caves. And I rode a camel. If you think of horseback riding and then camelback riding, it may be funny to you. We also made pottery and we bought three plates for each of us: me, Josh and Kate. We bought and rug and we got to run around on the different rugs and it was fun except mom got mad at us sometimes. Other than that, it was a great day in Cappadocia.Kate: Hi everyone! For the entire day in Cappadocia we had a guide we had to wake up at 7:30 to we could eat and pack. Our guide's name was Ugur (the g is silent and it should have a little smiley over the top). The first place we went to was an underground city ... read more

Geo: 39.1452, 35.3437Didn't wake up to well this afternoon, had to be told to get out of the room! Whoops! I missed out on the Vespa ride around the valley, which was disappointing. There was no way I could drive a vehicle or be in one at the moment. Instead I slowly packed and sat out in the sun feeling sorry for myself. The rest of the group would be riding around and having fun right now. Went for a little walk around the hotel and took a few photos of the fairy chimney buildings. In the mid afternoon went for a walk into town to do some shopping and to have some food. On the way back to the hotel, bumped into the others who had just returned from their day of riding. There was ... read more

Geo: 39.0425, 35.3437After breakfast, which we ate out in morning sun. We were told we were going for a hike this morning and had a local guide with us for the day. Was hoping it wasn't going to be too much hard work. We went for a short drive, then began walking into the valley. The area is covered by pointy rocks that have been formed due to erosion. The area is full of underground cities, caves, rock churches and chambers. People used to live in these caves. They are made of solidified volcanic ash and is soft to carve. We walked up a dodgy ladder to a small church- one of the highest spots in the valley. The walls were painted with bible scenes and in quite good condition considering they don't seem to be ... read more

Geo: 39.1452, 35.2123Back in the mini-bus we hit the road for Goreme. On the way we made a stop at a school that likes tourists to come and visit. The kids were very excited that we had arrived. Some of them dressed up in traditional clothing and did some singing and dancing for us. Part of the classroom was set up as a traditional Turkish house. Spent the rest of the day driving. Was looking forward to the next hotel, as Hussein told us that the rooms were caves! I found out later on that my room was nothing to get excited about. The hotel is on the side of a hill and all the rooms are caves. The room that I was given was horrible. It stank mouldy, had a tiny little window and was ... read more
